As of 2021, he plays for the professional volleyball team Chigl Yekaterinburg in the Russian Volleyball Super League. He is also a member of the Japan national volleyball team. Yaku is highly respected for his ability as a strong libero. Karasuno's Nishinoya has matched his talent with his experience playing in the same position. He takes great pride in playing as a libero, and especially considers it a great honor to play as a libero for the Nekoma team, whose members specialize in strong defense. Off the court, he is very supportive of his team, and often takes on a "parental" role similar to Sugawara. This may be why Yaku and Sugawara seem to get along well. He can also be incredibly short-tempered, especially towards Lev, who seems to find Yaku's outbursts "scary" (though these outbursts are usually in response to Lev's tactless comments about Yaku's height and/or attempts to skip classes with him). Even Kuroo sometimes refers to him as "Demon Senpai." However, overall, Yaku is a fairly honest, straightforward person who is very confident in his skills and cares about his team. He often gets into lighthearted skirmishes with his younger teammates, and sometimes eats their food. Fans have noted that his personality has many similarities to Sugawara's.

Upon joining the Nekoma Volleyball Club, Yaku and Kuroo started off with an uneasy relationship due to Yaku's high school having heavily defeated Kuroo's high school in the past. The two would often get into arguments and often seemed to disagree on everything. Kai, who was the only other first year in the volleyball club, still stuck with Kuroo and Yaku despite having to deal with their many arguments. Despite their differences, when asked about their goals, Yaku, Kuroo, and Kai all agreed that they were aiming to win the national matches and this seemed to leave the three players' relationships on good terms.

He first appears in Chapter 79 of the manga and in the first OVA episode of Haikyuu!!, which aired at the 2014 Jump Festa. He enrolled in Nekoma, became the team's Middle Blocker, and proclaimed himself the team's ace. Plot Expedition to Tokyo Karasuno first encountered Lev during their first away games. He was not present during the practice matches between Nekoma and Karasuno because he had little experience. Koushi and Asahi wondered if the first year staring at them was present during the practice matches. During the match, Lev showed off his fast-paced attack, stunning the Karasuno team members. Lev and Hinata bump into each other at the bathroom entrance. Hinata is intimidated by Lev's height and background, and is surprised to discover that Lev cannot speak Russian. Lev teases Hinata about his short stature, which offends Shoyo. Lev then compliments Hinata's jumping, but adds that he can jump higher than him, prompting Hinata to jump and hit her head on the top of the doorway. They end up promising to defeat each other. Lev is present at Karasuno's farewell as they leave for Miyagi.
