Appearance

Buggy is a tall man with an appearance resembling that of a clown, as to mirror his epithet. He has long blue hair, gray eyes (light blue in the manga) The big, red nose on his face is, in fact, his real nose. Buggy's face is always covered with makeup, just like a clown, and the motifs change from time to time: in his first appearance he had crossbones going down his face forming an X; he also had two blue lines near both of his eyes, red lipstick and his jolly roger on his hat.[1] However, in later episodes after the Loguetown Arc his look changes. First, a green star appears in the middle of the forehead, two half circles appear beneath the eyes, and there is a straight line on the middle of his chin.[18][19] After that (when his crew meets Ace), he has two green dots on both sides of his head and four big green dots on the rim of his hat, which still has the jolly roger on it. He also has green eyeliner and green lipstick, with a curvy line going down both sides of his face. In the Impel Down saga, he has crossbones again going down his forehead to below his eyes, two pink lines pointing up, and red lipstick. In his pirate captain attire, he dons a striped white and red shirt with short sleeves, white gloves reminiscent of the ones worn by clowns, a sash around his waist like many other pirates, and a pair of loose pants reaching to his calves, just above a pair of striped socks and pointy shoes. He also has a scarf around his neck. Hanging from his shoulders there is an orange, fur-lined captain's coat. On his head he has an orange hat with his jolly roger on it, over a neckerchief with the same pattern of his shirt. While in the manga his scarf and sash are orange just like many other components of his attire, his pants are light-brown and the epaulets of his coat are simply gold, in the anime he was given a much brighter color scheme, with a purple scarf, green sash, light-green pants, and green epaulets.

Personality

Buggy is vain, egotistical, and seeks to be glorified and feared by others. When he was nine years old, he complained that the Whitebeard Pirates were receiving more attention in the newspaper than his crew, the Roger Pirates.[21] He does not spend much of his time improving his own abilities to become a powerful fighter, but rather focuses mainly on recruiting powerful subordinates who do the hard work while simultaneously being subjected to him.[22][23] If presented with an opportunity to make himself look good, Buggy will take it. Whenever someone strokes his ego, even if it is due to an inaccurate impression of him, Buggy will revel in it and start getting delusions of grandeur; when the Impel Down escapees praised him for being on Roger's crew, Buggy started considering that their support could help him take down Whitebeard or even become the Pirate King

Devil Fruit

Buggy accidentally consumed the Bara Bara fruit, a paramecia-type devil fruit that allows him to separate his body parts and fight with them independently of each other, but it stole his ability to swim, which, according to Shanks (when They were both cabin boys), Buggy was an excellent swimmer. The abilities gained from this fruit also make Buggy immune to thrusts, slashes and slashing attacks, the attack only separating him from his body.

Weapons

Buggy seems to prefer edged weapons, the majority that favors him are the use of knives. He tends to keep a single knife at a time or three between his fingers, and can apparently perform small feats, to cut or stab his enemies. Buggy appears to carry an impressive amount of such weapons on his person at all times, some of which he prefers to keep hidden under his gloves or in his shoes (where he also has blades, and attacks directly with his feet).

History

Buggy was born somewhere on the Grand Line.[8] Thirty years ago, when he was nine years old, Buggy was seen among the Roger Pirates with his partner Shanks. They were both reading the newspaper and Buggy was looking angrily at the news as it continued to focus on the Whitebeard Pirates.[16] Twenty-eight years ago, they discovered that their captain had an incurable disease. So they decided to recruit Crocus as the ship's doctor.[18] Buggy spent most of his time with Shanks, arguing about meaningless things, like which pole was colder, North or South. Their constant bickering was considered a nuisance by the first mate, Silvers Rayleigh.[19] Buggy swallows the Bara Bara no Mi Buggy accidentally swallows the Bara Bara fruit. During the attack on an enemy ship, Buggy came across a map, which marked the location of a treasure submerged underwater. In the same attack, the crew found a devil fruit. Finding out it was worth too much, Buggy traded the real fruit for a fake one overnight and then ate the fake one in front of the entire crew with the intention of selling the original. However, as he was preparing to leave the crew with the map and the real fruit, he was surprised by Shanks. Buggy hid the fruit in his mouth and before he could take it out Shanks surprised him again causing Buggy to swallow it. Buggy then jumped into the sea to pick up the map that had flown away, but discovered that he couldn't swim (a side effect of the devil fruit). Shanks jumped in to save him but Buggy has since blamed him for his misfortune.[19] Twenty-seven years ago, Buggy panicked and begged his captain not to fight the Golden Lion Pirates, given the size of their fleet. Shanks then reminded him not to worry as his body is immune to slashing attacks. Despite this, Crocus, Scopper Gaban and Silvers Rayleigh assured him that he would trust Roger and the ship. Shortly after, this confrontation became known as the Battle of Edd War. Sometime twenty-six years ago, the Roger Pirates went on a rampage on an island. After defeating a group of marines, they learned that the Whitebeard Pirates had docked on the other side of the island.[21] After Oden joined the band, he began searching for the road ponelyphs, visiting Skypiea, [22] Fishman Island and Zou. Just before heading to the last island of the New World, Buggy caught a severe fever, so he was reluctantly left behind. Shanks then decided to stay with him to take care of him, so neither of them made it to Laugh Tale.[23] After reaching the end of the Grand Line and Roger being recognized as the Pirate King, the gang returned to look for Buggy and Shanks. Roger then decided to disband the band and then hold a party, where Buggy offered Kozuki Oden his help in opening the borders of Wano Country only to be politely rejected by him.[17] Roger was the first to leave the ship, everyone mourning his departure; Just as they fired Oden in the same way after taking him to the Wano Country.[24] Shanks and Buggy were present at Gol D. Roger's execution. Shanks offered Buggy to be part of his crew, but Buggy flatly refused. They went their separate ways and did not see each other again for twenty-two years.[25] At some point Buggy formed his own crew and settled on the East Blue, obtaining a bounty of Belly15,000,000, numerous treasures valued at Belly10,000,000, and a ship called Big Top.
