He was a businessman in the field of robotics and the restaurant business, and teamed up with Henry Emily to create the restaurant Fredbear's Family Diner, which featured gold-colored spring-loaded animatronic robots: Fredbear and Spring Bonnie. The main feature of the robots was that they could be used by people as costumes, as well as work autonomously. While operating the restaurant in 1983, Afton's youngest son is killed by the careless handling of the Fredbear animatronic by his eldest son, Michael, who was bullying him but meant no harm. The animatronics also cause the death of two restaurant employees, who are crushed by the suits' spring locks, leading to the abandonment of the technology. At the same time, Afton secretly kills Henry's daughter Charlie, losing his mind. After numerous lawsuits and the closure of Fredbear's Family Diner, William and Henry founded Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. In 1985, Afton, dressed as Spring Bonnie, killed five children and placed their corpses into animatronics: Freddy, Foxy, Bonnie, Chica, and Golden Freddy. Afton also founded Afton Robotics, which supplied robotic animatronics to a pizzeria called Circus Baby's Pizza World, with the animatronics being designed to kidnap children. His daughter, Elizabeth Afton, ignored his warnings and got too close to a Circus Baby animatronic, which killed her. A "remnant" of Elizabeth later merged with the killer robot.

William breaks up with Henry after being bitten by 83 Springbonnie and Fredbear, who are removed from the stage and replaced with new animatronics of Freddy, Chica, Foxy, and Bonnie. William kills five children (Gabriel, Susie, Jeremy, Fritz, and Cassidy). He hides their bodies in the animatronics, but the Puppet infuses their souls into the mascots.
