Shadow The Hedgehog

APPEARANCE

Shadow is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with black fur. He has red eyes, a patch of white fur on his chest, a black nose, a tan snout, and small, triangular ears with tan channels. He has seven quills on the back of his head, four curved upward and three downward, and a short, pointed tail. Red stripes adorn the top of each quill, the edges of his eyes, and extend down the sides of all four limbs from his elbows and knees. Shadow wears white gloves with black cuffs and red tabs; red, white, and black shoes, which, like his gloves, have black cuffs and red tabs; and gold rings, one on each of his wrists and ankles.

PERSONALITY

Shadow is, quite bluntly, a brooding loner. He usually acts with a cold, businesslike indifference, only occasionally showing his vulnerable side. He is rarely seen with other people for an extended period of time, and usually distances himself from virtually everyone. He is usually straightforward and does not speak much, but always knows exactly what to say in combat. However, Shadow never bluffs; if he makes a threat, he has every intention of following through on it. As the most violent and ruthless character in the series at times,[5] Shadow's cruelty and aggression causes enemies to never treat him lightly. In addition to his dark and violent demeanor, Shadow can be cocky and stubborn. He usually treats others in a very callous manner, voicing his opinion no matter how cold-blooded it is and not caring what the response is. In the past, Shadow has had some degree of mental instability, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder. This was demonstrated by his instances of post-traumatic flashbacks of Maria's face before and during the events of the Black Arms incident, though it could be argued that the latter game's instances were simply an effect of his amnesia. On one occasion, at the time of the Space Colony ARK incident, seeing police sirens flashing caused him to intensely remember the massacre aboard the Space Colony ARK, and in particular Maria's death. Shadow was soon able to overcome this in the Black Arms and Emerl incidents, during which he decided to let go of the past but keep Maria in his heart.

RELATIONSHIP WITH MARIA ROBOTNIK

She was his best friend from the moment he was created. According to Shadow's intertwined memories, Maria was his only friend who lived with him on the ARK Colony alongside his grandfather Gerald Robotnik, who created Shadow to find a cure for his illness; but it is unknown if Shadow was aware of this purpose at the time. The two would often talk about Planet Earth, hoping to one day visit it when Maria recovered from her illness. Shadow considered her as family, having grown up with their friendship for so long. He was quite helpful to her, promising that he would help her with anything she needed. At the time of the invasion, Shadow accompanied Maria to the escape pods holding her hand. In the present, Shadow's view of Maria is that of a precious person, taking Maria's wishes as his own; even if they are beneficial or detrimental to humanity. Due to his amnesia, Shadow had remembered Maria's wish as that of ending Planet Earth. Many of Shadow's actions are influenced by the memory of his best friend, such as when he decided to go to an island about to explode to save his ally Rouge; remembering Maria's promise to help people. Maria is the only reason why Shadow defends the Earth.

PAST

Shadow's origin dates back many years to "Project Shadow", a secret government-sanctioned project run by Professor Gerald Robotnik, Doctor Eggman's grandfather, aboard the Space Colony ARK. The goal of the project was to create "The Ultimate Lifeform" as a weapon for the United Federation, however, Gerald planned to use the results of the project to find a cure for his dying granddaughter Maria. The name "Shadow" was coined for two reasons: one being the irony that a shadow cannot be created, that immortality was impossible and serves as a metaphor for "unreal things"; while the other came from Maria who said that shadows could "teach people the way to the light". At some point, Gerald made a deal with Black Doom, leader of the Black Arms, whose DNA would be used to create Shadow the Hedgehog in exchange for the seven Chaos Emeralds to be delivered to him when the Black Comet returned to Earth in 50 years. Meanwhile, Gerald created the Eclipse Cannon, a laser that could harness the powers of the Chaos Emeralds to potentially destroy the Black Comet upon its return. Upon awakening, Shadow began his life on the ARK and formed a bond with Maria and assisted the researchers. At some point, details of Project Shadow were leaked to GUN. Fearing Gerald's true involvement with the Black Arms, the government ordered GUN to raid the ARK and shut down the project. During the raid, Gerald was captured and all of the researchers involved with Project Shadow were killed, as well as Maria, who asked Shadow to give all the people on Earth a chance at happiness, just before activating Shadow's escape pod where he was powerless, ejected towards Earth.

SONIC ADVENTURE 2

Shadow the Hedgehog awakens from Doctor Eggman's invasion of Prison Island and as a thank you, Shadow helps Eggman on his journey to take over the world, asking him to bring the Chaos Emeralds to the Space Colony ARK. Shadow terrorizes a bank in the federal capital and takes a Chaos Emerald from it. During this, Shadow begins to recall Maria Robotnik's final moments, vowing to get revenge on humanity. Shadow then encounters Sonic the Hedgehog, after explaining his motives and bantering a bit, he uses Chaos Control to escape. Shadow reunites with Eggman and explains Doctor Gerald Robotnik's legacy and the Space Colony ARK to him, as well as revealing the Eclipse Cannon to him and explaining the weapon to him. Rouge the Bat interrupts his planning by questioning its validity and proposing a deal where in exchange for borrowing the Emerald Radar, she will bring the Chaos Emeralds to the two of them. To convince Eggman, she shows an Emerald she had already obtained before, Eggman and Shadow agree. Shortly after this, Shadow begins to investigate Rouge.
