Shadow is a black anthropomorphic hedgehog with red stripes down his spine, around the edges of his eyes, and on his arms and legs. He has red eyes, a patch of white fur on his chest, and a tan snout. He has six spines on his head, four of which curve upward and two of which curve downward, two on his back, and a small tail. For attire, Shadow wears white gloves with black cuffs and red tabs, and Air Shoes which, like his gloves, have black cuffs and red tabs. On each of his wrists and ankles he wears a single gold ring.

Shadow was created by Dr. Gerald Robotnik on the ARK space colony as part of an experiment to develop the "ultimate life form." His original mission was to help cure diseases, but after the death of his friend Maria Robotnik, he swore to protect the planet from humanity, though he initially sought revenge.

Uses and powers: Super Sonic and Super Shadow: When Sonic or Shadow collect all seven emeralds, they can transform into more powerful versions of themselves, gaining invulnerability and increased speed (Shadow changes color to a lighter one and Sonic to a yellow one). Chaos Control: Shadow uses a Chaos Emerald to teleport and manipulate time and space. Infinite Energy: They are a source of power that has been used by several machines and villains, such as Dr. Eggman (although he always loses them thanks to Sonic and his friends).
