He was a Demon Slayer belonging to the Demon Slayer Corps and Water Pillar (水みず柱ばしら, Mizu Bashira?)[3].

Appearance:

As characteristic attire, he used the regulation uniform of the Demon Slayer Corps, also wearing a Haori divided[4] into two colors, one red[5], which belonged to his sister[6], and one with geometric patterns[7] in green, orange, and yellow[8]; this last pattern is a reminder of his friendship with Sabito[9]. During the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, he lost his right arm[10], and three months later, he got a haircut[11].

- Personality:

Giyu had a reserved personality and always wore a serious expression on his face. He was shown to have a strong sense of justice with no tolerance for those who don't know their own limitations and waste their lives. Despite having a deep hatred towards demons and never hesitating to kill one, he was able to go against the rules of the Demon Slaying Corps by protecting Nezuko Kamado upon realizing that she might be different from other demons[12] and even agreed to sacrifice his life for the sake of her and his brother, Tanjiro Kamado, by committing sepukku if the young woman were to eat a human[13]. This implied that he didn't completely despise Demons like the rest did,[14] and was willing to make an exception to let them[15] live if they didn't kill or eat humans,[16] proving in turn that he was the most pragamatic when dealing with Demons instead of hating them like the rest of the Hunters did. He was someone who didn't talk much and seemed to have trouble interacting with others, because of this he kept his distance from his companions.[17] This led him to have a kind of complex with what others think of him and he refused to believe that he was hated as Shinobu Kochō claimed.[18] After having the opportunity to interact with those around him, he wished to improve his relationship with the rest of the Pillars. His aloof attitude was due to the fact that he developed a strong inferiority complex since his participation in the Final Selection, which made him a more severe person; this affected him to the point of wanting to abandon his position as Water Pillar. He came to his senses after Tanjiro Kamado explained to him that he shouldn't live with the guilt of being a survivor, but rather should live for the people who sacrificed their lives for him.

Giyu's name contains the kanji for "heroism, loyalty, and courage 義ぎ勇ゆう (Giyū,, 義ぎ勇ゆう?). His surname contains the kanji for "wealth" and "hill". The surname Tomioka, is also an existing district of Japan. Tomioka's haori has two distinct designs. The red side belongs to the haori worn by his sister Tsutako, while the geometric patterned side belongs to Sabito, his best friend. For Tomioka, the haori symbolizes sacrifice and loss. Tomioka in the omake of Kimetsu Gakuen Monogatari (Kimetsu Academy Stories) is a Physical Education teacher, he was shown scolding Tanjiro for wearing accessories (such as his hanafuda earrings), Inosuke for having an open shirt and Zenitsu for dyeing his hair, despite having told him that it is a natural color, receiving a blow for it. Tomioka's Japanese voice actor is the same one who voiced Saito Shimaru from Gintama. Giyu's favorite food is braised salmon with daikon (winter radish). Seeing a new dish made Giyu smile, a sight that both impressed and disgusted Shinobu. Giyu's popularity poll rankings are as follows: Giyu placed fourth in the first popularity poll with 2,190 votes. Giyu took second place in the second popularity poll with 13,281 votes. Giyu is one of two characters to have their own spin-off, the other being Kyojuro Rengoku. Giyu's spin-off is a two-part story that depicts the events following Giyu's encounter with Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado, called Giyu Tomioka: Gaiden (Part 1) and Giyu Tomioka: Gaiden (Part 2). Giyu's crow is a very ancient crow, so it tends to make mistakes when delivering messages and moves slowly during battles. It is said to unnerve Giyu very much. Giyu, as well as Tanjiro and Sanemi, fell into a coma after the battle. Every day, Nezuko would visit Giyu with her haori repaired and ask him to return. For a time, it was unknown if Tanjiro and Sanemi would also regain consciousness due to their condition (taking at least 3 months to fully recover). Giyu befriended Tengen and his family after the battle. When Tengen's son was born, she was allowed to hold the baby. Giyu is one of the 4 Hashira who use a normal Nichirin Katana. The other 3 are Kyojuro Rengoku, Sanemi Shinazugawa and Muichiro Tokito.

Enhanced Speed: Giyu possessed a high level of speed. At times, he was imperceptible to both humans and demons. This was demonstrated on several occasions; when he snatched Nezuko Kamado from her brother's arms[1], when he grabbed Inosuke Hashibira before he realized what happened, or when he severed the head of the Lower Moon Five, Rui, in the blink of an eye[2]. Superhuman Physical Strength: After years of training, he eventually developed superhuman physical strength. Demonstrations of his strength were shown when, for example, he managed to knock down Nezuko and Tanjiro after causing a strong gust of wind by wielding his sword[3] or when he managed to turn his nichirin crimson by clashing it with Sanemi's sword[4]. As a Pillar of the Demon Slaying Corps, Giyu was a very powerful and talented swordsman. His fighting style was the Water Breathing Technique (水みずの呼こ吸きゅう, Mizu no kokyū?). He was able to relatively easily defeat Rui (Lower Moon Five)[5] and hold a close match with Akaza (Upper Moon Three). Master Swordsman: As a Hunter and a pillar of the Extermination Corps, he was one of the most powerful and skilled swordsmen in the entire organization.[6] His skills as a swordsman were high enough for Akaza, the Upper Moon Three, to claim that Giyu possessed finely developed swordsmanship.[7] Crimson Red Nichirin: During the battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, the Wind Pillar, Sanemi Shinazugawa, clashed violently with Giyu's nichirin sword, causing both to temporarily turn crimson red, granting them the ability to hinder the enhanced regeneration of demons.[8]

Demon Slayer's Mark (鬼き殺さつ痣あざ, Kisatsu Aza?): During his confrontation with Akaza, he was able to awaken his Demon Slayer's Mark which allowed him to enhance his physical abilities to much greater levels. His mark resembled water currents and was located on the left side of his face.[9] Water Breathing (水みずの呼こ吸きゅう, Mizu no kokyū?): This was the style he learned from his teacher, Sakonji Urokodaki[10]. This allowed him to control the oxygen in his blood by controlling his breathing. In turn, he was able to increase his strength and endurance when fighting, even equaling or surpassing demons. He knew all the postures of this style, and even developed his own technique, the 11th posture. Like all the pillars, Giyu was also able to maintain full concentration breathing. The postures he could perform were: First Stance: Surface Cut (壱いちノ型かた 水みな面も斬ぎり, Ichi no kata: Minamo Giri?)[11]: He generated a powerful cut forming a wave by the movement of his weapon, enhancing his attack capable of easily decapitating any target.Second Stance: Water Wheel (弐にノ型かた 水みず車ぐるま, Ni no kata: Mizu Guruma?)[12]: He performed a 360° spin in any direction while holding his sword firm, forming a circle of water, performing a powerful cut on the enemy.Third Stance: Dance of the Currents (参さんノ型かた流りゅう流りゅう舞まい,, San no kata: Ryūryū Mai?)[13]: He would swing his sword against his opponent in a way that imitated the movement of water currents, thus being a fluid attack in a circular motion.Fourth Stance: Tide Strike (肆しノ型かた 打うち潮しお,, Shi no kata: Uchishio?)[14]: He would perform several cuts consecutively while fluidly spinning simulating a tide around the target. Fifth Stance: Rain After the Drought (伍ごノ型かた 干かん天てんの慈じ雨う,, Go no kata: Kanten no Jiu?)[15]: It consisted of a cut that ended the life of the target without causing any pain.
