Appearance Shanks wears a long black cape over his shoulders and, until he met Luffy, wore a straw hat obtained from his former captain, who accompanied him for many years and became synonymous with his image. [2] During his earliest appearances, he wore a pair of slightly baggy brown pants that were pulled up to mid-calf with gold buttons on the outside. Recently, he has been seen wearing a similar-looking pair of pants, but with floral designs on them. In all of his appearances, he wears a pair of sandals and sports a short, scruffy beard. [16][6][15] In all of his appearances as captain of his crew, he wears a white shirt half-buttoned, leaving his chest exposed. Around his waist is a medium-sized red sash, and a saber on his right side. Initially, in Chapter 1, his shirt was tucked under the sash, but since leaving Luffy's home village the shirt is unbuttoned, giving him a more mature appearance than when he was seen in the past.[16][6][15] Shanks' most notable feature is the red color of his hair, the origin of his own epithet. On his face he has three scars on his left eye made by Blackbeard,[6] and when saving Luffy from a Sea King he lost his left arm.[17] Every time he confronts Teach, his scars begin to burn.[18] At the beginning of One Piece, Shanks bears some resemblance to Luffy, but as Oda's style has changed over time, he began to show more distinct and distinct features. His eyes are drawn more narrowed and sharp—as opposed to the round shape that is common in the drawing style of almost all characters at the beginning of the story—and his nose is more defined, similar to Nico Robin's. His facial features are rougher and more aggressive, while his physical build is noticeably more robust, and although he is not among the largest characters in the series, his height is much greater in comparison.

Shanks is a character from One Piece. Shanks is Monkey D. Luffy's idol, the pirate who inspired him to take up piracy itself, and one of the Four Emperors who rule the New World. Unlike other characters, he does not impose this status on himself, instead preferring to travel to different places and party, with a particular fondness for drink. Despite being the youngest of the previous Yonko, it is implied that he is on the same level as the experienced Kaido, Big Mom, and even Whitebeard, who was feared as the strongest man in the world. Shanks' origins are unknown, being a supposed descendant of the Figarland Family, but it is known that he was found by Gol D. Roger as a baby hidden inside a chest obtained after the God Valley Incident. When Shanks was 9 years old, he and Buggy became cabin boys for Roger's crew, where they trained as pirates and faced Whitebeard's crew on several occasions. They were subordinate to Silvers Rayleigh, the crew's first mate, and devoted themselves to fighting each other. Both attended the public execution of their captain, where they split off to form their own crews. Later, he became a rival to Dracule Mihawk. The duels between these two are even remembered by Whitebeard. During Luffy's youth, the Red-Haired Crew would stop by his town and he would often go to the town bar. Luffy would always beg Shanks to let him join the crew. Not only would Shanks refuse, he would mock Luffy by saying that he couldn't swim and that he was just a kid. Shanks saved his life when a bandit tried to drown him, costing him his dominant arm, but Shanks said that it didn't matter as long as Luffy was safe. Shanks then gifted Luffy his favorite hat, telling him to give it back once he became a great pirate. His current bounty is 4,048,900,000 berries.
