Mages and Magic

Mage is a term for humans with the special ability to store and channel Mana as a means to cast spells, giving them advantages over civilians. According to legend, they can cast spells with Orbs and Scepters as conduits. Nowadays, with mankind gaining better understanding in their powers, magic engineers achieved orb modernization enabling mages to systematically cast spells and replace scepters with other tools such as spell rifles. This phenomenal breakthrough finally led to a formation of a new type of military unit: soldiers who are able to cast magic. Universally, mages are armed with a single-core Operation Orb which aided in casting magic, giving them the ability to take flight with a maximum speed of 250 mph (402km/h) and altitude limit of 6000 feet (1829 km). They have weaker firepower than artillery, while their speed and altitude is lower than aircraft. They excel in ground attack and mobility, making them the perfect branch of service as rapid response units. Mages are considered doing their best work in urban battle because a city is a three-dimensional battlefield full of cover and obstacles. On the other hand, air-to-air combat is their weak point. It's believed that most aerial mages could penetrate the armor of armored vehicles with ease since they could directly hit the roof of those armored vehicles. However, as the tank technology continues to improve during the war, mages gradually lost their advantage in anti-tank warfare.

Mage Types

Aerial Mage The first branch of mage service established in an army, in spite of airborne operation they're not part of the air force and serve to assist ground forces. It's not until the 203rd Mage Battalion, under Tanya Degurechaff, that this profession established new doctrine as the ideal rapid response force due to their firepower and mobility in the air. They are known as the best type of military unit in close quarters battle, urban guerrilla warfare, and special operations. Artillery Observer Usually deployed as an individual, mages that serve as observers are responsible for directing artillery and mortar fire onto a target. Tanya served as one in her first official mission, reporting the margin of error and situation of the enemy forces after artillery barrage. Due to the nature of their task, artillery observers are also very vulnerable to enemy forces as they control a great amount of firepower, are within visual range of the enemy, and much closer and easier target than artillery units. Marine Mage The newer branch of mages deployed in navies, assisting their operations with a similar role as a seaplane. They're used mostly to escort and run interference after take off from their cruiser. Marine mages also serve as units on duty to conduct anti-submarine warfare. As this is a new branch of mage force, according to Tanya they are not used as effectively as aerial mages due to the lack of an established doctrine. Medic Mage The special mage unit that can cast medical formulas to the wounded. Tanya's injuries in Norden were cured by the advanced magic treatment. Ace Mage In small circles of mages, the requirement to be an ace mage is as low as five kill counts. Above an ace is the Ace of Aces, a powerful mage that stands above others with a kill count numbering in fifty. Named Mage Ace mages with a fearsome reputation among enemy mages who are registered in their database as dangerous adversaries. These mages are given code names.

Mage Types Part 2

Second Name In contrast to monikers given by their enemies as a dangerous mage, mages with prestigious achievements are honored by the Mage Bureau with a second name. The chosen name represents the image of heroes of the Empire in the eyes of their comrades and people. Tanya's second name 白銀 (Hakugin) literally translated as White Silver is commented by several characters to depict a beautiful, noble and cold hero. Named Killers A group of ace mages from Republic, known for their excellent teamwork to overpower superior Imperial mages with their volley of fire. All of them are registered in Empire's database as Named Killers, whose role is to eliminate Named Mages from the Empire.

Magic Spells or Formulas

Flight Formulas The aeronautic magic, which allows mages to soar through the sky. This magic works by creating propulsion, forcefully raising a mage into the sky and maintaining balance while in the air. The standard altitude for flight mages is 6,000 feet Defensive Formulas Passive Shell: Protects against small fragments, small caliber bullets and blast waves. Can be kept on indefinitely, also easy to cast together with other formulas. The biggest ordinary single shot it can defend against in a direct hit is 12.7 mm, but in a saturation attack, even infantry small arms can weaken and penetrate it. Active Barrier: Increasing the density of the shell in one part to create a shield that can withstand machine gun fire. Whether it provides adequate protection depends on the mage's skill. Ordinary, if concentrate on defense and funnel more mana, it can withstand up to about 40 mm. Offensive Formulas Enchanted Rounds: Sealing formulas inside bullets or grenades to activate as required. Formulas can be activated with minimal mana, but the rounds need to be prepared. Penetration Formula: As implied in the name, enhancing penetrating power of the rounds. Homing Cluster Shot: Any bullets that imbued with this formula will split into several homing projectiles upon reaching a certain range and will seek out the target. Artillery Shots: Any bullets that are imbued with this formula will have its firepower enhanced to be comparable to artillery shots. It needs several layers control equation to converge the power. With Type 95, Tanya can shoot the magic bombardment that has similar power to 28 cm gun. Optical Formulas: Emits a straight heat beam. Skilled mages can refract it to change its course. Noted to be the favored formula of Republican mage for their volley of fire doctrine. Explosive Formulas: Creates an explosion at any coordinate. Converted to gunpowder, the power of Heavy Explosion Formulas are 150 kilos at most.

Magic Spells or Formulas Part 2

Self-Destruction: Overloading one's Operation Orb with mana causing it to reach critical mass and explode, injuring the user and surrounding enemies if not outright killing them. Guidance/Interference Formulas: Directing a formula's trajectory, could be used for offensive and defensive purposes. It also could be used to interfere with radio signals. Magic Blade: Enchanting an item such as a bayonet with mana which makes it sharp and durable enough to cut a man or plane in two. Even a tough magic shield can't bare the attack of magic blade. Combustion Formulas Napalm-Type: A large-scale formula that usually used in trench and unconventional war. It will cause strong mana signal, fire, huge explosion and blast. It isn't efficient in encounter battles or high-maneuver warfare. Explosive Vaporization: A practical combustion formula when attacking the target in buildings. Detection/Support Optical Decoy Formula: Creates an illusion that will interfere with the visual senses of those around the user when cast. Skilled mages can easily differentiate between what is real and the illusion, especially since this formula is inclusively targeting sight and nothing else. Observation Formula: Processes data of a Mage's surroundings, uses vary from locking on target coordinates, detecting observational waves, and analyzing an enemy's mana signature. In the anime, this formula takes the form of a holographic screen while in the manga it's akin to a halo above the user. Heat Detection Formula: An impractical formula that is hard to handle even for Tanya. In volume 2, she once considered shoot the enemy bombers with the attack formula paralleling this one. Others Analgesic Formula: Doping up the target with it. It can improve the target's reaction time, increase instantaneous strength, and work as analgesic. Medical Formula: Easing the pain and curing light wounds. With more advanced magic treatment, it can cure the serious injury by gunshot as well.

Magic Spells or Formulas Part 3

Magic Interference: The spread of high-density mana that can cause the noise and jamming to the radio equipment and haze the video with static. That basically makes communication units on the battlefield where mages involve in get paralyzed or perform electronic countermeasures. Magic Communication: The radio communication between mages. While using a special format with directional waves via orbs, the high density of magic remaining will create ear-piercing noise to the radio messages. Voice Amplification Formula: Increasing the volume of the user.

Tanya and the 203rd Missions and Operations.

The 203rd has fought on the Rhine Front against the Francois Republic. The 203rd Deep striked on Dacias Captial, The 203rd Deep striked on Russy Federations capital. even filming the Batalion singing the empire's Anthem while destroying major monuments and political buildings. The 203rd Legadonia participated in a naval landing on Legadonia soil. destroying naval guns before the main force arrived.

Viktoriya Ivanovna Serebryakov

Usually called by her nickname "Visha", was originally a conscript mage in the Empire's Cadet Corps. During the battle of Rhine, she was assigned to the member of Platoon 3 under Tanya von Degurechaff's leadership. After she was sent to OCS and completed her crash course, she served as Tanya's adjutant. After the battalion suffered numerous losses over the several campaigns in participated in, she eventually received command of one of the companies. She has shorter brown hair and her bangs are slanted on her left side. She has blue eyes and has a slender build. Moreover, she wears her officer uniform in civilian places and a battle suit during her combat mission. Before her first battle in Rhine, she was a naive girl like most teenagers in her age. After that, she tried hard to learn how to fight as a mage to follow Tanya, her platoon leader. She seldom complained to Tanya, though most times she could barely be accustomed to the painful living of battle. She is a competent adjutant, and also a pragmatist. She gets along well with the other soldiers in the 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion. In addition, she is more emotional in front of Tanya, and becomes strict when carrying out her orders.

Matheus Johan Weiss

The Vice Commander and 2nd Company Commander of the 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion. He is originally from the Eastern Army and was appointed vice commander by Tanya. He has a curved face, black hair, and black eyes. He wears his military officer suit in casual places and his battle suit during combat. He is a prudent yet not unrelenting man. He is skilled at managing and disciplining his subordinates, making him competent at his duties. He is very concerned about his subordinates, usually taking care of the battalion in various ways and enjoying the confidence of them. For Tanya, he is a thoughtful and reliable subordinate whom she is willing to spend much time on. She also usually chats (sometimes bickers) with him.

Vooren Grantz

The Second Lieutenant who serves as a loyal member of 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion under the command of Tanya Degurechaff. Vooren is a young man with short medium blonde hair and emerald eyes. Like the others, he wears a military uniform as default and a battle suit when fighting. He was a recruit mage sent to the Rhine Front in chapter 29. He is the leader of 4th training platoon and received battle education from the instructor unit 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion. After the night raid mission, his magic potential catches Visha's eye. He joins 203rd Mage Battalion as the replacement of the wounded Kahteijanen.

Wilibald Koenig

Nicknamed "Wili", is the 3rd Company commander of V601 under the command of Tanya Degurechaff. Koenig is a tall man with sharp facial features. He has long dark brown hair that he keeps tied in a low ponytail on his back. He has a sharp chin and small eyes. Like all soldiers, he wears a military uniform when not in combat and a battle suit on the battlefield. He is a silent-type man who is always listening to Tanya's orders properly. He is also friendly towards his comrades and never doubts their abilities.

Rhiner Neumann

Serves as the 4th Company Commander of V601 under the command of Tanya Degurechaff. He has a round face, brown hair, and dark eyes. Additionally, he has a stout appearance in anime. He is seen wearing his military uniform and battle suit during combat. He is playful and always has a habit of teasing his comrades about their lifestyle.

Erich von Rerugen

A talented military officer who serves under the Imperial General Staff. He was in the field up until he reached first lieutenant, and he also used to serve as a military attaché stationed in the Allied Kingdom. He has short, brown, center part hair and blue eyes. He has a quite fit body shape, and the airs of a noble. He is knowledgeable, diligent, and thoughtful on his duties. He has extraordinary observations of various departments during the War College conference and received high evaluations even in the General Staff. Hence, he is able to see through Tanya's true nature and thinks of her as a monster. But of all the people in the Empire, he is the one who trusts Tanya the most, supporting her requests for assaults to the point where he even fights Strategic command about it.

Hans von Zettour

A.K.A "Zettour", is a staff officer in the Imperial army, currently serving as the Deputy Director of the Service Corps in the General Staff. He is renowned as scholarly general with a profound mind, and is regarded as a vital pillar of the Imperial Army along with his colleague, Kurt von Rudersdorf. He wears his 1940's German-designed general official suit (the gorget patches are identical to an SS-Standartenführer during WW2) with his medals hanging near his left chest. He has also a monocle in his left eye. He seems quietly serious and ordinary in the eyes of his fellow officers. However, he has a tremendous and outstanding mindset and beliefs. He has an academically inclined personality, always making risk assessments to their military actions. He is clever, thoughtful, and knowledgeable about both strategies and combat operations. He believes in rationalism and hates unfounded speech and idealism. He is loyal to the country, always keeps the best soldiers and deciding the best solution for the Empire.

Kurt von Rudersdorf

A.K.A "Rudelsdorf", is a staff officer in the Empire's army, serving as the Deputy Chief of Operations. He has dark grayish hair and a moustache. He wears his officer uniform during meetings and he is always seen smoking a cigar. He is a clever and energetic resolute. He is also a critical thinker and always considers the possibilities in his surroundings. He always acts calm and disciplined in general assembly and official meetings, while having the courage to take high risks at the same time.
