Once upon a time, the Earth was ruled by two races: humans and monsters. But one day a war broke out between them, which was won by people. King Asgore decided to put an end to the suffering of the monsters - he gave the order to kill and take the souls of every person falling into the Underground in order to destroy the barrier and take revenge on people. To do this, he needs to collect seven human souls. His wife Toriel was very angry with this law, so she left him and remained to live in the ruins.

The protagonist leaves Toriel in search of the castle of Asgore, which contains an exit to the Surface. In the course of his adventure, the child meets various monsters, the most significant of which are Sans and Papyrus — the sentinel brothers of the forest of Snowdin, Andine — the head of the Royal Guard, Alphis - the royal scientist and Mettaton — the robot TV presenter created by Alphis.During the passage, the protagonist tries to make friends with everyone, using various actions and, in some cases, flirting. By the end of the story, the hero learns that Flowey is the reincarnation of Azriel, created as part of Alphys' experiments. Before the failed battle with the Heat, Toriel and the rest of the monsters that the heroes have befriended decide to intervene. However, Flags sets up an ambush, taking all the human and monster souls to assume his true form of Azriel and fight the hero. During the battle, a man manages to save his friends and eventually win. Azriel turns into a childish form, breaks down the barrier and expresses his remorse before leaving. The hero falls unconscious and after waking up finds himself in a circle of friends. Monsters go to the Surface and start a new life.Frisk stays to live with Toriel.
