Persona Attributes
Cyno is a playable character in Genshin Impact. As the Grand Judge, Cyno leads the Matra and strikes fear into the hearts of the Sumeru Akademiya's researchers. Despite this, Cyno has a fun side outside of his role at the Akademiya, as he has an affinity for Summoning Sages and constantly makes unfunny jokes. He was first seen in Chapter 12 of the official manga and appeared in the Teyvat Chapter Plot Preview. In the manga, he is seen helping Collei seal her Archon Residue.
appearance
Cyno is a young man with tanned skin, orange eyes, and medium-length white hair. Cyno's clothing appears to be inspired by traditional costumes worn during the Ancient Egyptian civilization. His headdress resembles the head of Anubis, a jackal-headed deity, also known as the God of Mummification. The kilt-like garment Cyno wears is reminiscent of the Shendyt, which was a popular garment for men, usually depicted on commoners, rulers, and even deities of Ancient Egypt. In the manga, Cyno is depicted wearing a large black cape that includes a hood with what look like jackal ears sewn on, matching the aforementioned headdress. His cape appears to be inspired by North Africa, showing some similarities to the large capes worn in the Sahara to keep out the heat and protect during sandstorms.
personality
Cyno is a dry, stoic, and generally emotionless young man with a ruthless and vicious approach to his duty as a matra that makes him intimidating and unapproachable. He cares little for niceties or social gatherings and is known throughout Sumeru for his ruthless efficiency in upholding the law. Despite his young age, Cyno holds the position of Grand Judge at the Akademiya and takes it seriously. Cyno is extremely dedicated to upholding the rules of the Akademiya and punishing any transgressions, to such an extent that even the Sages of the Akademiya (ostensibly his superiors) distrust him. Notoriously, Cyno will relentlessly pursue any individual who attempts to flee his judgement, even across the wilderness, a trait which, in combination with his prowess as a hunter and warrior, makes escaping from Cyno nearly impossible. Because of this, Cyno's name is infamous within Sumeru and many scholars fear the possibility of ever meeting him, despite him only handling cases of great interest. Despite his young age and not being a well-known investigator, Cyno holds the position of Grand Judge at the Academy and takes his position seriously. Because of this, many dread the prospect of having to meet with him for their investigations, despite him only handling cases of interest. However, if anyone tries to run away, he will relentlessly pursue them to bring them back for judgement.
personality
In particular, Cyno idolizes "justice" above all else; though this predominantly manifests itself in his pursuit of suspected criminals, Cyno will also protect criminals from any danger that arises during their escape attempts until, in his opinion, they can be properly judged by the Akademiya. Though he is often seen by the scholars of the Akademiya as an obstacle or threat to their research (complaints to which Cyno is indifferent), Cyno sees his role as that of a protector, preventing seekers of knowledge from going astray and becoming dangers to themselves and the world. However, the fact that he has been blessed with Electro Vision suggests that his view of justice is closer to a desire to preserve the law, which he views as eternal, rather than being interested in justice itself.
personality
Despite his seriousness in academic and work-related matters, Cyno is rather laid-back outside of Akademiya duties, being an avid fan of Summoning Sages. He also shows concern for Collei, frequently visiting her when he has the time to make sure she is doing well. Despite this, he maintains his tough, emotionless attitude in most situations, even outside of work. Aware that his reputation as a Grand Judge often intimidates those around him (even his fellow Matras), Cyno tells jokes as a way to help people relax around him, though his jokes are generally not funny and his long-winded attempts at explaining them are even more so. Cyno also confesses his fondness for the desert he comes from, finding himself most at home there and often taking evening walks there to help him relax.
As the leader of the entire matra, everyone in the Academy deserves Grand Judge Cyno and his incredible reputation. His role is to catch those who violate the Academy's rules, stop illegal research, and safeguard discipline within the Academy. However, according to some scholars, the Grand Judge is destroying academia, banning research, and even "cutting off the path to knowledge," making him a potential threat to those seeking wisdom. Over time, the scholars began to quietly distance themselves from Cyno whenever they encountered him, with whom they did not want to have any relationship. But the Great Judge cares little about this. If he can intimidate some of these scholars with his exaggerated public image, it will also be perfect for him to continue to maintain work discipline at the Academy. In the words of Cyno's forest ranger friend: "The research carried out by most scholars is not so important that they need to speak to the Great Judge."
Wisdom can grant both inspiration and arrogance. Throughout the history of the Academy, there are many scholars who have broken the rules and committed crimes in the name of "pursuing wisdom." For example, to demonstrate the Wraiths' maximum expansion capabilities, a scholar from the Amurta College used an illegal chemical catalyst to create a giant-sized Wraith. However, the creature exploded in the experiment, destroying the roof of the laboratory. In order to test the Ruins Guardians' agricultural capabilities, another scholar from the Spantamad College lost control of a Ruins Guardian he had modified himself, destroying a large amount of arable land and even causing serious injuries. And there are many more cases of academic fraud and abuse of knowledge for personal gain. It is these scholars who ignore the rules of the Academy and endanger the people that Cyno intends to catch and judge by leading the matra. Faced with this, scholars give all kinds of excuses to justify themselves. Their reasons include cuts in the research budget, favoritism by the Academy, plagiarism of their research results… They even dare to accuse the university of envying their "talent" and stopping the scholars' research because of it. Faced with these arguments, Cyno's response is always silence, and then sending these charlatans to trial. There are thousands of excuses from those who break the Academy's rules, but the result is only one.
Grand Judge Cyno not only enjoys a great reputation in the Academy. According to a forest guard in Avidya Forest, he once saw him silently traveling through the jungle at night. A person living on the outskirts of Apam Forest still clearly remembers a white-haired young man carrying a travel backpack who asked him for a glass of water before going deeper into the forest. Adventurers resting in Sobek Oasis claimed to have given Cyno directions even though the place he was going was infested with monsters. Not even the most reckless mercenaries and treasure thieves in the Great Scarlet Desert dared stand in the way of the Great Judge, having learned a lesson from a group of mercenaries who were crushed in the desert for sheltering fugitive scholars. However, the respect that Cyno has for the criminals who fall into his hands comes from somewhere else. When they flee the Academy, they run in panic and sometimes end up in dangerous places. Yet, rather than let them suffer the consequences of their own actions, Cyno rescues them without hesitation so that he can bring them safely to trial at the Academy. Before being judged, a criminal who crossed the Great Scarlet Desert with Cyno asked him what the point of it all was, to which Cyno replied: "It is the laws of the Academy that judge you. I only take you to them." After his release from prison, this Vahuman College scholar wrote a novel entitled “The Wicked One” in which he recounted his adventure with Cyno. Today, this work is very popular in the Academy, and the Vahuman College even invited the author to give a lecture to explain in detail the novel’s concept of justice.
However, Cyno argued that some passages were too exaggerated, as they did not see any "monsters created by the descendants of King Deshret," did not set foot in the "living labyrinth beneath the desert," nor did they "take shelter from a sandstorm under the body of a giant worm." However, Cyno claimed that at least the scholar's description of the offense was fairly accurate and deserved some credit for it, but he also warned him not to commit any more crimes.
The mere mention of the office of the matra is something that strikes fear into the scholars of the Academy. Putting aside the supposed "evil acts" of the matra, what scares the scholars even more is when Cyno enters the office and a harsh, bone-chilling laugh is heard. When that happens, they assume it's a satisfied laugh from the Matra because Cyno has just passed sentence on some scholar's crime. However, only they know that this laughter is actually due to Cyno's special sense of humor. "Some time ago, I had a case of a scholar whose thesis was rejected several times, which put him under great academic pressure. During one of the evaluations of his thesis, the scholar bribed the members of the jury to approve it. But the facts in his writing were so wrong that, shortly after, someone reported him for academic fraud. When I went to arrest him, the scholar asked me what I had done wrong." Cyno paused and continued: "So I said, 'Your thesis.'" As the Matra stood there staring at him without saying anything, Cyno thought they had not understood the joke, so he explained: "You see, when the scholar said 'what had I done wrong', he was referring to having bribed the jury to approve his thesis, while I, with my answer, meant that his entire thesis was wrong. The joke is that I changed the subject we were talking about." When he finished his presentation, the Matra looked at each other in astonishment and laughed in unison, somewhat dryly. Amidst awkward laughter, the serious office environment took on a strange human warmth. To avoid such awkward situations, the Matra agreed that when Cyno finished telling a joke, everyone should laugh once or twice in response so that he wouldn't have to explain anything.
On the other hand, if any other matra tried to imitate Cyno's comedic style, they would be severely punished by the others with a method such as confiscating their cafeteria food coupons. After all, having a Cyno in the whole matra is more than enough.
Cyno has always believed that the matra is not the enemy of those who seek knowledge. Cyrus, a former tutor of Cyno's, told him that without the rules of the Academy, wisdom would turn into catastrophe. Such uncontrolled wisdom would be like bait floating in the middle of an unknown ocean: it would tempt those confused seekers of knowledge to enter an abyss. It would make scholars proud, arrogant and irreverent, and even make them despise all organism and talk vainly of life and death, which could bring irreversible consequences to the world. The reason why the sages do not cease to promulgate new regulations for the Academy is to prevent those who seek knowledge from falling into temptation and straying from their path. The Matra who hunt down those who break the law and judge them accordingly are the true guardians of those who seek knowledge at the Academy. However, scholars view the matra as destroyers who stand in the way of their knowledge through violence. Some of the nicknames they are given include "Mushroom Brains," "You Can't Do Anything," "Paper Shredders." However, the most well-known nickname is the one given to them by a scholar from the Haravatat Faculty: "Academy's pack animals." The first time they heard this nickname, most of the Matras became furious and thought that the scholars did not value their work. Cyno, on the other hand, loved the nickname. "It is true that we matra bear the laws and rules of the Academy. We must all keep that burden in mind when enforcing our authority." After a brief reflection, the Great Judge continued: "On the other hand, when carrying out our work, we must also be like beasts of burden, who do not argue with people and only concentrate on doing things well."

When the Academy was first founded, scholars squandered enormous amounts of resources to give free rein to their creativity and imagination. Reshaping the terrain, modifying the climate, copying ancient relics… When earthly knowledge no longer satisfied their curiosity, some scholars tried to observe the stars and play with life and death. However, this was not a knowledge that was within their reach at the time. To ensure that their lives would not be endangered by seeking wisdom, the wise men established the so-called "six deadly sins." They considered that all the crimes of this world derived from these six sins: 1. Interfere in human evolution. 2. Playing with life and death. 3. Study what is beyond the universe. 4. Investigate the origin of words. 5. Worship the gods without carrying out devotional actions. 6. Investigate the deepest truth without a shred of fear. The sages promulgated and modified the rules of the Academy based on these six sins, while the matra was its executive arm and ensured that the scholars obeyed the law. Thus, everything in the Academy was governed by the observance of the law. Having elucidated this knowledge, the prosperous Academy and its scholars marched forward. But time changes things. People forgot the old six deadly sins and some people with too much ambition did their thing… However, for Cyno, the current Grand Judge, what he must do has not changed. He will continue to judge lawbreakers fairly according to the ancient six deadly sins. And that includes the wise too.
Cyno's Sages Summon Card Sleeve
Cyno's Sages Summon Card Sleeve This card sleeve, which contains Cyno's Summoning Sages deck, is his most prized possession. The exterior is wrapped in the finest leather, with the seams woven with the utmost care. If you tie the case tightly with the leather cord it comes with, it will stay perfectly closed and not even a drop of water will get inside. The interior is padded with silk, which prevents the corners of the cards from bending. According to the shopkeeper who sold it to him, this silk was imported from Liyue and made from silk flowers. The case even has a sturdy strap so that it can be carried securely around the body. On the outside, the emblem of the Summoning of the Sages and the name of its owner are engraved. Cyno keeps his most powerful deck in this case and is convinced that as long as he plays with it, he will always win. Once you have everything ready, all that's left to do is find someone to play a game with. Maybe… that forest ranger has some free time.
vision
Vision There are all sorts of theories at the Academy about how Cyno got his Vision. Some say that he was once ordered to hunt down a scholar who was researching Vision imitation. To do so, the scholar purchased an ownerless Vision, which later became Cyno's Vision. Others say that Cyno is a descendant of King Deshret, and that from childhood he lived in a temple in the Great Scarlet Desert, where he was raised by an unnamed Hermanubis priest who fostered his determination and taught him how to fight. When Cyno was ready, the priest gave him a Vision and let him cross the desert alone until he reached the Sumeru Academy, where he would carry out Hermanubis' will. However, some conspiracy theorists say that Cyno's Vision is related to some kind of forbidden technology at the Academy. Otherwise, how could a simple desert dweller like him have obtained a position at this institution? No one dared ask him directly, and Cyno had no desire to waste energy on such absurd rumors either. Actually, the story of how he got his Vision is quite simple. It happened the day before he was to be appointed Grand Judge. As usual, after finishing his matra duties, he went to the library to read some books related to the Academy rules. He still remembers perfectly that what he read that day was about the six sins established by the sages. They believed that these sins were the root of all crime, and in fact, all the current Academy rules were essentially derived from the six deadly sins. When he came to the section on the sin of “Searching for the Deepest Truth Without a Tide of Fear,” he did not quite understand what he was reading, so he closed his eyes to reflect. When he opened them, he saw a Vision resting on the page of the book. Cyno began to think about Visions. First he confirmed that there was no Academy rule against receiving one, and then he checked multiple

Cyno began to think about Visions. First he confirmed that there was no Academy rule against receiving one, and then he reviewed multiple academic papers related to the topic to ensure that this Vision was not a trap. Finally, he considered the challenges that awaited him upon being appointed Grand Judge and what this Vision could do for him in facing them. After much deliberation, Cyno decided to accept this gift from the gods. When he finished thinking, the first rays of dawn could already be seen outside. He left the library with the Vision and some books he had not yet finished reading and headed to the place of the naming ceremony. If all went well, in just half an hour he would be the new Grand Judge. He was about to receive the sacred authority to judge, and his Vision was a tool that would ensure the fulfillment of that authority.
