Clark Still (クラーク・スティル), officially known as Clark Steel before the rights claim, is a character from Ikari Warriors, Metal Slug, and The King of Fighters. In Gamest's 1997 Heroes Collection poll, Clark was voted the staff's 22nd favorite character. He shared the spot with Kizuna Encounter character Kim Sue Il. His official nickname is Tough & Cool.

History

Clark is a member of the Ikari Warriors mercenary agency which is under the leadership of Commander Heidern and Colonel Ralf Jones. He was a former spy until he entered his current position. Clark is known to be a loyal and serious soldier who specializes in gathering information for the team and the mission. He apparently always wears his sunglasses to hide a scar right in the middle of his forehead; caused by Ralf, while he was selflessly playing with his knives. Like the other Ikari Warriors, Clark is frequently entered into KOF tournaments by Heidern. He continues to appear as a support character for Ralf's decisions. He and Ralf helped Leona overcome her past in the 1997 tournament. In 1999, their division is ordered to investigate the NESTS cartel. They are also assigned a new recruit, Whip. She immediately takes a liking to Clark as he appears more professional than Ralf. When she disappears after the 2000 tournament, he joins the team investigating her whereabouts in 2001. He gratefully receives a photograph of Whip and Kula and hands it to a worried Ralf. By 2003, Clark joined the mission to confirm the origins and crew of the Sky Noah, a transport that was believed to be associated with Rugal. Due to the Orochi seal being broken, Leona enters a state of Blood Riot and prepares to attack his comrades in the 2003 tournament. Fortunately, they manage to subdue her and head to the headquarters to report. Prior to the KOF XI tournament, he and the rest of the Ikari attended the funeral of a fellow soldier named Jim Aldgate. After finishing his service, Heidern reveals his concerns about the possible reincarnation of the Hakkesshu and the Orochi seal. He gravely orders Ralf, Clark, and Whip to investigate and find evidence of the perpetrators in the tournament.

Personality

In contrast to the crude and outgoing Ralf, Clark is calm and rarely shows true emotion. However, a melancholic streak is marked, and his loyalty to his comrades is never questioned. He is known to mock Ralf's stubbornness and serious nature.

In combat

Fighting Style: Clark has been trained in the Ikari Warriors' mercenary combat style and is also a skilled fighter. His special move Napalm Stretch is apparently a homage to Ataru Kinniku from the Kinnikuman series; both characters have the same move and employ almost the same style. The "Clark Spark" is quite similar to the "Kinniku/Muscle Spark," and another of Clark's moves similarly mimics the "Tower Bridge" used by Robin Mask in the series. Powers: Superhuman Strength - Clark can grab and throw anyone regardless of their weight. Techniques: Running Tree - Clark grabs the opponent and slams them into the ground. In his powerful form he bounces three times and ends with a huge jump until he slams into the ground. Running Pirates - This is his DM where he does the same procedure as the Running Tree, except he connects three bounces to the ground. In the KOF 2002 HSDM he does it twice against the wall and finally on the ground. In 2002 UM does sequences of both keys and bounces on the ground, it is controllable depending on the damage it gives him. Neomax - Here he charges his opponent and goes higher, dealing more damage to his opponent on the ground. It looks very similar to Daimon's NEOMAX. Skills: Firearms - Clark can pair well with almost any weapon. Survival - Clark can survive in different terrains, especially jungles. Combat Weapons - Clark can also use knives.

Curiosities

In KOF: Maximum Impact 2, Fio compares Clark to his comrade Tarma Roving. This is somewhat ironic as Clark has an alternate costume designed in Tarma's image from KOF 99 to XI. His alternate costume is similar to Dee Jay from Street Fighter and Bob Willson from the Fatal Fury series. In his backstory for the XI tournament, Ralf mentions that the 2 veterans' relationship with Heidern is represented by the white magnolias at the funeral they attended. It has a special intro with Ralf in KOF 97-98 doing the Cross Charger pose. Clark enjoys watching wrestling so he has autographs from Ramon and Tizoc. Clark is muscular but not as over the top as shown in KOF XII-XIII, which displeased fans. This was finally fixed in The King of Fighters XIV. At the beginning, Clark had the same suit as Ralf at the beginning of KOF, little by little their suits and sprites became more differentiated.
