Persona Attributes

appearance

Although Ace and Luffy are not related by blood, Ace is very similar in appearance to Luffy. However, Ace is more serious, and is also slightly taller and more muscular than Luffy. Interestingly, his facial expressions were very similar to Roger's in his youth. Ace's tattoos were one of the most notable features of his appearance. On his back, he had the symbol of the Whitebeard Pirates, a purple cross-shaped bone surrounded by a purple skull with a white mustache, which Ace was very proud of.[17] He had a second tattoo on his left bicep, which read "ASCE" with the letter S crossed out. The S was reminiscent of the one Sabo used in his letter to Ace and Luffy. It also resembles the one on Sabo's flag. Ace wore a shirt until he got Whitebeard's tattoo, after which he chose to wear nothing to cover it up. The only exception was his Winter Island attire. He wore black boots, knee-length shorts with a studded belt, and a blue pouch belted around his left leg. He also wore a second, shorter belt with a large "A" on a silver plate, but it was left unbuckled. He wore a dagger in a green sheath on his left hip. On his left arm, he wore a Log Pose, a red and white bracelet and elbow pad, and an "ASCE" tattoo. He wore an orange hat with two strings hanging from it, with two Jolly Rogers (one happy and one sad) that reached down to his chest, connecting to a large medallion in the shape of a bull's skull, with an orange tassel hanging below the medallion, and red beads around his neck. Ace began wearing a hat early in his journey, but lost it on Banaro Island during his battle with Blackbeard. His knife was confiscated when he was arrested and was no longer one of his attributes in Impel Down. The Whitebeard tattoo he was so proud of was destroyed by the same blow that killed him. However, both the hat and knife were placed near Ace's tombstone. Either they were found or similar-looking copies were made.

history

Portgas D. Ace,[12] born Gol D. Ace (ゴール・D・エース, Gōru Di Eōsu?)[6] and nicknamed Fire Fist Ace (火拳のエース, Hiken no Eōsu?),[4] was the adopted older brother of Monkey D. Luffy[13] and Sabo, as well as the son of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, and his lover, Portgas D. Rouge (both deceased).[14] He was placed under the guardianship of Marine Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp, as requested by Roger before his son was born.[15] Ace was the captain of the Spade Pirates,[3] and later became the 2nd Division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates.[2] The plot of the Impel Down Arc and Marineford Arc revolves around saving Ace from execution by the World Government. During these events, Ace sacrifices himself to protect his younger brother and is ultimately killed by Admiral Akainu.

former team

Spade Pirates Ace was extremely attached to the Spade Pirates, a crew he himself had formed. When he realized that his crew could not escape Whitebeard, he created a wall of fire to allow them to escape, leaving him alone with Whitebeard. The affection was mutual; they challenged the Whitebeard Pirates in hopes of recapturing their captain, but were beaten and kidnapped along with Ace. The Spade Pirates, along with the rest of Whitebeard's crew, mourned his death.

relationship with luffy

Ace and his adoptive brother, Luffy, were very close as children and remained the same as pirates even after being separated for over three years. As a child, Ace was initially on his own, hostile towards Luffy and getting angry when Luffy cried. But later became protective of him, especially against Garp, even insulting his grandfather in an attempt to protect Luffy. This protective trait remains in the current plot. Ace is the first to step in to protect Luffy from Smoker in Nanohana. Even after his death, he continues to protect Luffy - asking Jinbe in Impel Down to watch over Luffy if he were to die. Later, when he discovered that Blackbeard wanted to kill Luffy and hand him over to the World Government, Ace immediately warned him that he would not let him capture his little brother. Despite their closeness, Luffy often angered and worried Ace by doing reckless things. That's why Ace didn't doubt Hancock's words when she told him that Luffy had infiltrated Impel Down to save him. Although Ace often worried about Luffy's recklessness, he was privately proud of his brother's past exploits, and in the anime, he was shown smiling slightly while listening to Garp in prison recount Luffy's actions at Enies Lobby and Sabaody. Apparently, Ace often shared his stories about Luffy with the Whitebeard Pirates' other allies (including the Shichibukai Jinbe). He was very happy to learn that Luffy had received his first bounty, and wasted no time in showing it to Whitebeard. Thus, after Luffy's unexpected appearance on the battlefield at Marineford, Marco easily recognized Ace's brother. Ace had a habit of acting like a typical good older brother, such as asking Luffy's friends to look after his younger brother. He also gave Luffy part of his Vivre Card so that they could find each other. They respected each other's choices despite their differences and beliefs, arguing that the other was strong enough to take care of themselves. However, as Ace himself stated, he would never stop worrying about Luffy.

execution events

During Ace's execution, it was revealed that Ace was actually the son of Gol D. Roger, not Monkey D. Dragon as previously believed, and that he had been raised by Garp since birth. This makes Ace and Luffy sworn brothers, rather than actual brothers, as they have no blood ties. A flashback shows Luffy and Ace meeting for the first time as young children, implying that Luffy is aware of this fact. It also shows that Luffy, with his distinctive straw hat and scar under his eye, met Ace after meeting Shanks and leaving the island. Later in the flashback, they formally introduce themselves as brothers over sake. In a conversation with Ivankov, Luffy also shows his awareness of Ace's true father. Although the Whitebeard Pirates and Luffy invaded Marineford to save him, Ace gave his life to save Luffy. He was fully aware that he would be burned by Akainu's blow, but he did not hesitate to shield Luffy from the fatal blow. Ace's only regret was that he would not live to see Luffy's dream come true, which he believed would surely come true. Ace dies smiling, while Luffy collapsed into despair over the death of his dear brother.

Sabo

Sabo was Ace's brother 10 years ago. They wanted to raise money together to buy a ship and set sail. The gathering began 5 years before, when Luffy followed Ace as he went to see Sabo in the Gray Terminal. Sabo was one of the two people Ace called brothers. When Sabo "died" because of Saint Jalmack, Ace tried to get revenge but was stopped by Dadan, he later cried over the loss of their brother, he told Luffy that men should not cry. Ace mentions Sabo before he died as one of the reasons he ever wanted to live.

Poortgas D Rouge (mother)

Rouge was Ace's mother. She carried the child in order to protect Ace from the World Government. Ace was born one year and three months after Roger's death, and due to Rouge being five months pregnant, she had to resort to unknown methods (it was assumed that she was distracting the Marines with her will) to avoid giving birth. Shortly before her death, Rouge gave him the name Gol. D. Ace.[6] However, out of gratitude for his mother's sacrifice, Ace took her name.[20]

Gol D. Roger (father)

It was revealed that Ace's father was the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, and not Monkey D. Dragon as previously assumed. Because Roger died before he was even born, Ace felt he owed him nothing, which is why he chose the name of his mother, who died protecting him. Oddly enough, although Ace seemed to dislike his father, flashbacks from Ace's childhood show him brutally beating anyone who spoke ill of him. In another flashback, he shows Luffy and Ace meeting as little children, revealing that Luffy was aware that Ace was not his blood brother, and that Luffy knew about the identity of Ace's father. According to Luffy, Ace did not like to talk about it. By this time, Ace was one of the few pirates (along with Squard) who spoke ill of Gol D. Roger, though many pirates on Level 6 of Impel Down were also known to have grudges against the Pirate King.

Monkey D Dragon (Luffy's father)

Ace knew that Dragon was Luffy's father, but it is unknown what he thought of him, and vice versa. It is also unknown if Dragon knew that Ace was Roger's son (before this fact was revealed by Sengoku).

Monkey D Garp

Vice Admiral Garp adopted Ace at the request of Roger, who wanted Ace to live freely despite being from a pirate family. Ace disapproved of Garp's violence towards Luffy, going so far as to call Garp an "old piece of shit". Garp wanted the brothers to become Marines and was furious when he learned that Ace had become a pirate instead. Although Ace respected his "grandfather", he did not believe that he or Luffy would ever become Marines. Despite everything, Ace remained firm in his opinion and believed that they could not become Marines because their fathers were World Criminals. Garp was worried about Ace's fate and cried on the scaffold because of Ace's choice to become a pirate. Garp was also ready to kill Akainu for killing Ace.

Curly Dadan

Dadan, a bandit who was blackmailed by Garp, became a foster mother to Ace and Luffy. Whenever Ace nearly killed the villagers of a nearby village, Dadan would get angry at the boy for his actions, to which Ace responded that he had no regrets and that if he were older, his victims would die for insulting Gol. D. Roger. Dadan grew very tired of Ace's antics and would have given up her guardianship if it weren't for Garp. However, when the Goa Nobles burned down the Gray Terminal, Dadan led her crew into the thick of it to find Ace, Luffy, and Sabo. However, since Ace refused to avoid fighting Bluejam, Dadan's bandits took Luffy to safety while she stood by Ace's side. They truly cared for each other. When Dadan saved Ace from being burned, Ace stole medicine from the town to treat her wounds. When Ace intended to become a pirate, she cried when she heard Ace's message that he was grateful to her. Despite Ace previously calling Dadan a "hag" in disdain, before his death, he asked Luffy to say hello to her if he saw her, because he missed even her now. When Garp returns to the East Blue after the Whitebeard War, Dadan confronts him and tearfully accuses him of standing by while Ace slowly died.

strength and abilities

Ace was the commander of the second division of the Whitebeard Pirates. As such, he was one of the most powerful pirates under Whitebeard's banner. Aside from the abilities granted to him by his Devil Fruit, Ace also possessed immense physical strength. Signs of his great physical potential were evident early on, when as a child he defeated several gangs who spoke ill of his father. Ace was very strong when leaving his hometown (going to sea). Luffy stated that he had never defeated Ace before, despite having the power of the Gomu Gomu no Mi (Ace gained the power of the Mera Mera no Mi after going to sea). Ace was trained by Garp, who hoped to make him into a superior Marine. Ace demonstrated his strength during his fight with Marshall D. Teach, where he withstood blows from Blackbeard that nearly killed him and was even able to counterattack. Ace had a fearsome reputation. He received an invitation to join the Shichibukai while still captain of the Spade Pirates, though he declined the offer. After he joined Whitebeard, civilians were seen commenting on how Ace's powers were supposedly "the only ones in this world". The World Government granted Blackbeard the position of Shichibukai after he successfully defeated and captured Ace.

physical abilities

Ace Carries Curly Dadan Ace's immense strength as a child. He fought on par with Jinbe in the past. They nearly killed each other in a fight that lasted for five days, and then Ace survived the battle with Whitebeard that took place immediately after the battle with Jinbe. He was one of the few people who were able to be "baptized" in the boiling water of Impel Down prison without blinking an eye, which is considered an impressive achievement.

devil fruit

Mera Mera no Mi. MeraMeraP Ace uses the power of the Mera Mera no Mi. Ace ate the Mera Mera no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that grants him fire-based abilities, earning him the nickname "Fire Fist Ace". Ace also shows his strength by destroying several Baroque Works ships without much difficulty. Ace did not seem to care about his inability to swim in water, crossing the seas alone in a boat that seemed to be specially designed for him by powering it with fire. He skillfully sent his boat underwater when he jumped over the Billiards fleet, timing it so that it appeared directly underneath him. Also, when he appeared on Drum Island, snow did not fall on the entire island for a day, due to his Mera Mera no Mi abilities.

khaki/will

Khaki/Royal Khaki. Ace Uses Haoshoku Haki Ace releases Haoshoku Haki for the first time. Although not depicted in the main storyline, in a flashback from ten years ago, it was revealed that Ace had the ability to wield Haki uncontrollably, much like Luffy does. Whether he was able to seal it in as an adult or not is unknown. Ace's level of Haki is unknown, though it was hinted that Ace possessed Haki. Also, in a flashback, when Luffy was in danger, Ace screamed and the attacking members of Bluejam's pirate crew were hit with a mental wave, an ability that caused weak-willed people to fall. This is clearly a trait of Haoshoku Haki.

weapon

Ace carried a knife, but it was never shown in action. However, flashbacks showed Ace using various weapons, including an axe, in his attempts to kill Whitebeard. As shown in Luffy's flashbacks, Ace used long lead pipes as a child. In particular, he was shown wielding a long bloody stick in flashbacks.
