Doctor Stephen Strange is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by artist Steve Ditko and writer Stan Lee,[2] the character first appeared in Strange Tales #110 (July 1963). Doctor Strange serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, Earth's chief protector against magical and mystical threats. Inspired by stories of black magic and Chandu the Magician, Strange was created during the Silver Age of Comic Books to bring a different type of character and themes to Marvel.

After becoming one of the Sorcerer Supreme's pupils, he becomes a practitioner of both the mystical arts and martial arts. In addition to knowing many powerful spells, he has a suit containing two mystical items: the Cloak of Levitation and the Eye of Agamotto, which grant him additional powers. Strange is aided along the way by his friend and servant named Wong, his ally named Baron Mordo, and a variety of mystical items. He takes up residence in a mansion named Sanctum Sanctorum, located in New York City. Strange later takes the title of Sorcerer Supreme. In 2008, Doctor Strange was ranked 83rd on IGN's list of "The 200 Greatest Comic Book Wizards of All Time",[3] and in 2012 he was ranked number 33 on IGN's list of the "Top 50 Avengers".[4] He was also ranked number 38 on IGN's list of the "100 Greatest Comic Book Heroes".[5] The character was first portrayed in live-action by Peter Hooten in the 1978 television film Dr. Strange. Benedict Cumberbatch portrays the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Doctor Strange (2016), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) The Snap, Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Cumberbatch also appeared in the Disney+ animated series What If...? (2021), as an alternate version of the character.

Doctor Strange is described as "the most powerful wizard in the cosmos and more powerful than most of his humanoid peers" by the entity that embodies the Marvel Universe, Eternity. Stephen lacks any natural superpowers, instead thanks to his natural aptitude for the mystic arts, study and discipline he developed vast mystical powers (teleportation, illusion generation, energy projection, etc.) whose level can be compared to that of some cosmic entities. His primary sources of power are ambient mystical energy and those derived from the body, soul and mind, although he is not limited to these, as thanks to years of experience and study he is able to make use of a wide range of magical energy sources, presumably even managing to manipulate black magic, perform Necromancy and on one occasion using forces of Chaos magic. As the Sorcerer Supreme, he is not only the main line of defense against mystical threats on Earth, but he also appears to have a direct connection to the Vishanti (Hoggoth, Oshtur and Agamotto), who are able to provide him with mystical energy to perform powerful spells, provide him with information and help when Stephen needs it, and be able to invoke some of their powers, such as the Gray Hand of Hoggoth. Thanks to his great natural abilities, training and knowledge Strange is able to make use of the magical arts to perform numerous feats and achieve many effects such as: energy projection (destroying an entire island on one occasion), creation of shields and force fields, energy manipulation, object animation, biological manipulation, duplication, alteration of reality and violating the laws of physics, granting and denying powers, elemental manipulation, weather control, he was able to allow Peter Parker to interact with his Uncle Ben, summon hordes of dimensional beings, extrasensory perception,
