Biography
Devil Jin was an entity that inhabited Jin Kazama; he was able to use Jin as a vessel because Jin inherited the devil gene from his father, Kazuya Mishima. Devil Jin seemed to lie dormant within Jin until the end of the 3rd King of Iron Fist Tournament, when Jin was shot to death by Jin's grandfather, Heihachi Mishima, and a squad of Tekken Force soldiers. Instead of killing Jin, this event triggered his first transformation into Devil Jin. Devil Jin took control of Jin's body, attacked the Tekken Force squad and his grandfather, and then flew away. Devil Jin was once again dormant until the end of the 4th King of Iron Fist Tournament, when Jin was captured by Heihachi and confronted by Heihachi and Kazuya at Hon-Maru. Kazuya, possessed by his own devil entity, intended to increase his power by extracting Devil Jin from Jin; however, he was unable to do so due to a property of Jin's Kazama blood. Jin and Kazuya fought in their human forms. Jin defeated Kazuya and then Heihachi as well. Overwhelmed by hatred for the Mishima bloodline, Jin began to succumb to Devil Jin, sprouting wings as he prepared to deal a fatal blow to Heihachi. However, a vision of his mother, Jun Kazama, stopped his hand. Instead, he dropped Heihachi and flew out of Hon Maru. Shortly after Jin left Hon-Maru, the temple was destroyed by an explosion. Jin's great-grandfather, Jinpachi Mishima, had been imprisoned beneath the temple for many years, kept alive only by a malevolent entity that had possessed him. Jinpachi was freed by the explosion, and his appearance had a dramatic effect on Devil Jin. Devil Jin was able to take complete control of Jin's body and laid waste to an entire forest. When Jin awoke in the destroyed forest, he had no memory of what had happened, but knew it must have been the work of his devil form.
Jin retreated to his home, Yakushima, in search of peace, but was tormented by nightmares. He began to doubt his ability to control Devil Jin. He entered the 5th King of Iron Fist Tournament. During the tournament, he faced his rival, Hwoarang. Hwoarang was able to defeat Jin, but Devil Jin emerged in the wake of Jin's loss and savagely attacked Hwoarang, nearly killing him. Jin defeated Jinpachi in the final round of the tournament and took control of the Mishima Zaibatsu. Jin began communicating telepathically with the Devil Gene's progenitor, Azazel, while he was leader of the Mishima Zaibatsu. He eventually confronted Azazel and harnessed Devil Jin's power in an attempt to kill the demon, aiming to put an end to the Devil Gene once and for all. However, this attempt was unsuccessful, as part of Azazel's spirit survived. Jin remained afflicted by the Devil Gene. Jin was taken captive by the United Nations after his confrontation with Azazel. Devil Jin emerged during the transport and destroyed the helicopter he was in. Disoriented, Jin began to traverse the desert, alternating between his human form and Devil Jin's form. Eventually, Devil Jin confronted Hwoarang at Souq. This time, Hwoarang was able to defeat Devil Jin. Jin fled when the United Nations arrived on the scene and was subsequently taken in by Lars Alexandersson.
Jin fell into a comatose state for several months. Upon awakening, he seemed to have some ability to control the use of Devil Jin's powers and physical attributes, but continued to struggle to not be overpowered by Devil Jin completely. Jin confronted Kazuya in New York City and fought him using Devil Jin's power; however, Jin lost control during the fight and Devil Jin took over. Kazuya was able to defeat Devil Jin. Following his defeat, Jin had a vision of Devil Jin extending a hand to him, but he rejected his apparent offer of help. After the fight with Kazuya, Jin's capabilities diminished and he lost the ability to use Devil Jin's powers. Jin entered the 8th King of Iron Fist Tournament Asia preliminaries independently. Here, his powers were briefly reactivated during a fight against a female fighter named Reina, who was using Mishima Style Karate. This reactivation seemed to be motivated by the fear of death that Jin associated with that fighting style. After Reina lost the match, Hwoarang challenged Jin. During the fight, Jin experienced a euphoria that caused heat to build up within him, and was able to access some of Devil Jin's power without losing control, allowing him to win the fight. After the fight, Hwoarang commented that Jin's powers were "strange" but "just another part of him". Jin later learned from Niklas Kliesen that Azazel created demons in ancient times to be his servants, and that people with the devil gene could access their powers by acting on their wishes.
Later, Jin traveled to Yakushima in search of something that would allow him to defeat Kazuya. While there, he fell unconscious at a shrine. He met Devil Jin on a plane of his subconscious. Devil Jin mocked him, telling him that power derived from anger and hatred was essential, and that Jin could atone for his past actions only through solitude. Jin rejected these ideas, stating that awareness of his past mistakes was what would allow him to move forward. Jin then encountered Devil Jin as a reflection of himself. Jin resolved that he was done rejecting Devil Jin as an innate part of himself, acknowledging that he could only move forward if he accepted all that he was and all that he had done. Devil Jin asked him what he truly desired, and Jin stated that he was determined to protect those who were precious to him. Devil Jin granted Jin all of his power, and Jin realized that he had made efforts to protect him in the past. He thanked him and apologized for having misunderstood him earlier. Jin took on a new demon form with one white wing and one black wing. In this form, he was able to use the full power of Devil Jin while retaining his own personality. He awakened in time to save Lars Alexandersson from the path of one of Kazuya's lasers. Jin fought Kazuya in this new demon form and was able to hold his own against him. However, he eventually found himself struggling to hold back a massive attack that Kazuya intended to destroy Yakushima with. While trying to hold back the attack, he had a vision of his mother, Jun Kazama. She reminded him that Kazama's power was to foster life and cleanse evil, and Jin took on a new form, Angel Jin. In this new form, he was able to purify both himself and his father of the devil gene using his new powers.
Personality
When the Devil Gene completely takes over Jin's mind, he becomes a crazed, aggressive, destructive, and brooding demon. It is also evident from his dialogue in Campaign mode that he does not completely share the same memories as Jin, but will still retain certain feelings from time to time. More accurately, Devil Jin can be treated more like the Devil Gene itself within Jin's body, with Devil Jin looking down on his host as someone insignificant and weak-willed. Devil Jin seeks to acquire ultimate power and will do whatever it takes to achieve it. He is also very confrontational and sadistic, as he has a habit of laughing at his enemies' suffering during their victory animations. He refers to his opponents as "prey" and at numerous points in Tekken 6, he expresses his desire to eat his opponents. He takes great delight in the fear of those who encounter him, but this also leads him to have a great disdain for inorganic beings and animals, which he considers boring. He does not seem to acknowledge Jin's friends or associates, though he does get a severe headache when he approaches people close to Jin (Xiaoyu and Hwoarang) and when he approaches Jin's relative Asuka Kazama, who may have a devil-repelling power inherited from her family. After Hwoarang saves him from the United Nations forces in Tekken 7, Devil Jin focuses solely on attacking the United Nations and not Hwoarang, though this may simply be because they are the more imminent threat. Devil Jin is shown in a similar dilemma with Xiaoyu in Tekken Pachislot 4 (probably non-canon), where he remembers her and refrains from attacking her.
There have been instances where Jin appears to have more control over his Devil Gene, such as when he only partially transformed in his Tekken 4 ending and at the end of Tekken 6 and Tekken 7. In these instances, Devil Jin appears more sane and retains more of Jin's own personality. The only people who seem to be able to return Jin to his human senses are his mother, Jun Kazama, whose spirit or a vision of her calmed him in Tekken 4, or (non-canonically) his relative, Asuka Kazama (though she is unaware of this power), as the Kazama family can somehow neutralize the Devil Gene.
History
Tekken 3: Jin Kazama inherited the traits of the Devil gene from his father, Kazuya Mishima. Following the second King of Iron Fist Tournament, the Devil half that had fled from Kazuya attempted to inhabit the body of his unborn son, Jin, but failed. Jin's mother, Jun Kazama, fought off this Devil part, but it returned fifteen years later, after Ogre defeated her in battle. Devil marked the now-teenaged Jin with a mark on his left arm, possessing him, though it remained dormant. During the climax of the third King of Iron Fist Tournament, Jin was shot in the head by his grandfather, Heihachi Mishima. Healed by the Devil gene within him, Jin was resurrected as Devil Jin and made quick work of Heihachi and the Tekken Force guards accompanying him. Tekken 4: Jin makes it through the tournament and is set to face Kazuya Mishima in combat in the semi-finals. Before he can do so, he is attacked and kidnapped by Heihachi's Tekken Force. He awakens chained up in the family temple by Heihachi. Kazuya's devil has completely possessed him and is attempting to draw Jin's devil out of his body. Jin's devil tattoos appear in response to this and he breaks free from his restraints. Jin then struggles to keep his devil under control and after succeeding in doing so, defeats Kazuya and then Heihachi shortly after. Fueled by hatred for Heihachi, Jin partially transforms into Devil Jin and draws back his fist to finish Heihachi off. However, he is unable to deliver the finishing blow as he sees the spirit of his mother, or a vision of her, reminding him of who he is. He drops Heihachi with a statement, "Thanks to my mother, Jun Kazama" and flies away.
Tekken 5: Official Strategy Guide: With the destruction of Honmaru, Jinpachi was finally freed from his long imprisonment. Seemingly coinciding with this event, the devil gene within Jin was activated. Two months later, Jin was completely controlled by the Devil Gene, transforming into an evil and destructive life form... Foreword: When the Devil Gene takes over Jin Kazama, Jinpachi was able to escape captivity when Hon-Maru fell. This unleashed the evil that had been building up within Jin. Two months later... Evil has completely consumed Jin's mind. And a deadly force has awakened. Game Summary: During the 5th King of Iron Fist Tournament, after Jin is defeated by Hwoarang, Devil Jin awakens and defeats Hwoarang, hospitalizing him. Devil Jin is then allowed to continue in the tournament, and Jin and his Devil win and claim the Mishima Zaibatsu as their own. Final description: After successfully defeating Jinpachi, he walks over to Jinpachi's corpse and absorbs his powers. Devil Jin groans and begins to transform into a darker form, his body becoming covered in fur, his horns lengthening, and his eyes glowing white. He then shatters his gauntlets and unleashes a roar that sends a shockwave throughout the stage.
Tekken 6: Official Strategy Guide: Under the control of the devil gene, Jin Kazama's power rivals that of a deity. Foreword: Jin Kazama is an individual under the control of the Devil Gene. His power has gone beyond that of a normal human and rivals that of a demon. Game Summary: Jin used his devil power to defeat Azazel. He believed that Azazel could only be killed by a Devil Gene carrier, and that killing him would remove the Devil Gene from the world. After Jin defeated Azazel, Raven found Jin's body lying in the desert. He still bore the Devil tattoo on his arm, proving that Azazel's death did not free him from the Devil Gene. Final description: After defeating Azazel, Devil Jin takes the orb on Azazel's chest, hoping to gain more power from it. This severely backfires as his powers are absorbed by the orb, presumably due to the fact that the Devil Gene is from the powerful Azazel, as indicated by the tattoo similarity between Devil Jin and Azazel. Jin passes out and is shown without the tattoo. This possibly signifies the removal of his Devil Gene. At this point, the ending intersects with Zafina's ending. Zafina takes the orb and leaves, then the temple is shown to fall into ruin. Tekken 7: Foreword: After defeating Azazel, Jin Kazama was detained by UN troops. As his unconscious body was transported by helicopter, he was possessed by his devil form, broke free from his straitjacket, pierced the helicopter's fuselage with a powerful lightning attack, and then escaped. Intermittently fending off UN attempts to recapture him, Devil Jin wandered the desert until he stumbled upon a city in the Middle East. His arrival at the city's bazaar sent civilians fleeing for their lives, turning the once bustling settlement into an abandoned shell.
That was until a certain someone showed his face... History mode: While Jin is unconscious and weakened from his fight against Azazel, UN peacekeepers put him in a straitjacket and transport him by helicopter from the desert. Jin's devil gene activates once again while in mid-flight, and Devil Jin destroys the helicopter he is being transported in and falls into the sand. Later, Jin walks through sandstorms in the desert and is cornered by more UN soldiers. He destroys his would-be captors with a laser beam he launches into the sky. Jin is later rescued by Lars Alexandersson and taken, while in a coma, to Lee Chaolan's Violet Systems. He awakens after Kazuya kills Heihachi. As Lee and Lars comment that the G Corporation seems intent on continuing the war, Jin joins them on a rooftop overlooking the conflict. Lars tells Jin that it is up to him to right all that he has done wrong. Jin agrees, saying that because of his devil blood, it is up to him to kill Kazuya. As he does so, he clenches his fist, his devilish markings appearing on his face. Game Summary: Before Lars' arrival, Devil Jin confronted Hwoarang. Hwoarang defeated him and then saved him from a grenade explosion, suffering the explosion himself. Final description: After defeating Hwoarang, Devil Jin smirks as his opponent gets up to fight again. Their battle is interrupted by UN soldiers throwing a grenade at them. Hwoarang kicks Devil Jin away and is hit by the explosion instead. Devil Jin then flies into the air and unleashes a lightning attack on the soldiers.
Tekken 8: Official Website Profile (English): Devil Jin is another form of Jin Kazama, one who has lost all reasoning due to the devil blood controlling his mind. From the way he glides through the air on jet-black wings, "devil" is the perfect word to describe his appearance and abilities that go beyond human capabilities. Character Episode Prologue: Jin Kazama, once consumed by devil blood, declared war on the world as head of the Mishima Zaibatsu. Considering Jin to be a high-risk target, UN forces moved to annihilate Lars Alexandersson's rebel army that was providing him with shelter. An orbital attack launched from a satellite wiped out the rebel army's hideout and its protectors fell one after another. The UN's actions enraged Jin, causing him to lose control and unleash the devil in search of revenge. "I will kill each and every one of you!" Final description: Devil Jin walks towards the destruction of Manhattan, until he sees satellites firing lasers at him. He flies into space avoiding the lasers and destroys the satellites. Devil Jin then fires a giant laser at Earth, causing global destruction while laughing maniacally. Summary of game events: During his fight against Kazuya in New York, Jin transforms into his demon form to fight back. However, Devil Jin is easily overwhelmed by Kazuya's own devil form, destroyed by Devil Kazuya's laser and buried under rubble. As Jin sinks deeper into his subconscious, Devil Jin appears, reaching out to him to continue lending Jin his power. Jin rejects Devil Jin's hand and continues to sink into darkness.
Devil Jin surfaces once again during the preliminaries of the King of Iron Fist Tournament during Jin's match with Reina. Reina's fighting style using Mishima techniques briefly awakens Jin's devilish abilities once again. After Jin falls unconscious in front of the Yakushima Shrine, Devil Jin finds him once again within his subconscious to berate him for failing to protect his mother because he couldn't do so. Devil Jin then reminds Jin that he needs power and that he must hand Jin's vessel over to him. After Jin initially defeats him, Devil Jin relocates him to an area that looks like the Mishima Zaibatsu's former throne room. Devil Jin then reminds him of the war he once caused due to anger and hatred and that he is no different than Kazuya as he must live with his sins and find atonement through loneliness. Jin defeats him again and finds him once again in a deserted area with chains. Devil Jin then tells him that he faced himself and overcame his past. Now that Jin no longer wants to reject himself or himself, Devil Jin accepts Jin's offer to break the chains that bind him, as they fight each other one last time. After Devil Jin breaks free from his chains, Jin decides that he wants to protect those who are important to him, even if it costs him his life. Devil Jin agrees to grant him the power to do so and joins forces with Jin to allow him to transform once again, this time with one black wing and one white wing.
Shortly after, Devil Jin awakens to save Lars and Xiaoyu and flies off to battle True Devil Kazuya. This time, the new and improved Devil Jin has the upper hand against True Devil Kazuya, though it doesn't last long after Kazuya launches a devastating attack to kill him and destroy all of Yakushima. Devil Jin fights back against the attack, but after encouragement from Jun Kazama, Devil Jin transforms into a new angelic form and shields from Kazuya's attack. The fight continues and both Jin and Kazuya are evenly matched. By striking each other, the Devil Gene is removed from both of them, neutralizing it forever as they both become human once again.
Gameplay
Devil Jin's fighting style is an updated version of Jin's Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament style, thus returning to a Mishima-style gameplay while retaining many of his signature moves such as the Electric Wind God Fist and Flash Punch Combo. Unlike most Mishimas, Devil Jin is well-rounded and varied: while Heihachi excels at pressuring the opponent, and Kazuya at performing highly damaging punishes, Devil Jin is good at both, making him a powerful force. This doesn't mean that anyone who picks Devil Jin is instantly good, not at all: Devil Jin requires a certain amount of skill and practice because most of his good moves and launchers are easy to see and heavily punishable, so punishing the opponent incorrectly can leave the player open to massive damage. To use him effectively, one must either wait for the opponent to make a mistake, or use his large pressure tools and force them into making a mistake. His laser attacks and flight shouldn't be used carelessly, lest he be left open to punishment, but he actually has techniques that utilize his flight and powers that are fast enough to be used unchecked. Also, while his transition to a flying stance isn't safe on block, it's difficult to punish him properly.
Fighting Style
Devil Jin's fighting style utilizes the personally repressed and renounced mix of Mishima-style Fighting Karate and Kazama-style Traditional Martial Arts used by Jin in Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament. Over the course of the series, the animations of some moves were changed to be crude in execution compared to Jin's Tekken 3 moveset to reflect Devil's demonic nature, along with some demonic abilities of his own. His aggressiveness makes him more likely to be on the offensive, unlike Jin who is relatively more conservative and focuses on self-defense. In Tekken 7, he also gained some moves that originated from Angel.
