Origin of the character

Joseph Joestar (ジョセフ・ジョースター, josefu jōsutā?) is the protagonist of Part 2: Battle Tendency, a main character in Part 3: Stardust Crusaders, and a supporting character in Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable. He is a living example of survival, having survived on more than one occasion against enemies who clearly outnumbered him in physical strength, making use of his cunning and innate skills as a fighter. Joseph bravely faces the improbable threats that threaten him throughout his life with initiative and pure ingenuity.

Appearance

Battle Tendency: At just 18 years old, Joseph is already quite tall (195 cm / 6'5"), handsome and stocky, with light eyes, short, dark and unkempt hair, parts of his bangs extending outwards in the shape of spikes, in addition to bearing a huge resemblance to his grandfather Jonathan Joestar. Her first outfit is relatively minimalist and pragmatic: She wears a sleeveless T-shirt cut above the navel, a pair of gloves with studs on the knuckles, tight trousers with a leather belt, and knee-high boots. On her trip to Switzerland she dons a long, wide striped scarf; and later, as a gift from Caesar, a long coat and her thin headband patterned with a row of mosaic triangles. He initially wears a white shirt with a tie and suspenders, and a plaid coat draped over his shoulders. Other items include the aviator hat (like motorcycle gear), a wool cap, and a breathing mask designed for Lisa Lisa's training. Later depictions of Joseph include the aforementioned aviator hat and goggles, which were added permanently to differentiate him from Jonathan and to evidence his "love of mechanics and engines" brought on by the various airplanes and motorcycles present in Part 2.

Personality

In Battle Tendency, Joseph is a hot-headed, confrontational young man. Quick to respond violently at the slightest provocation, he regularly used the Ripple to respond to those who wronged him from his youth onwards. Having no respect for authority except that of his grandmother Erina, and later Lisa Lisa, he has antagonized police and gangsters alike. He is also a foul-mouthed individual, and regularly taunts and provokes his enemies, taking pleasure in wronging them. He notably mocked Kars when he launched him into space, claiming to have planned the whole thing over again from the beginning just to spite him. He is a man with a light-hearted sense of humor and prefers to fool around than have any responsibility. By his own admission, his most hated phrases are "hard work" and "work hard", and he still had to be pushed to train his Hamon talent despite facing certain death if he failed to do so and fight Wamuu again. He has quite the goofy side, and spends half of his fights reveling in having bested his current foe with incredibly crazy schemes, which take his adversaries by surprise at how absurd his plans are at first glance. Being a show-off, Joseph likes being the center of attention and couldn't stand his rival Caesar having a special technique. With his sleight of hand talent, he mixes his boastful nature and love of pranks into a dangerous tool in battle. Though he never really lost his general attitude, he became a strong and focused hero. In keeping with his dismissal of any kind of discipline, Joseph believes that anything is fair in a fight, as long as one is not unnecessarily cruel. This results in him being a cheater and once earned him a scolding when he tried to climb the Hell Climbing Pillar using a rope instead of using the Ripple as intended.

Skills

Hamon Joseph inherited an innate potential for the Hamon and its capabilities from his grandfather, Jonathan Joestar, as well as his mother Lisa Lisa. Additionally, he utilizes techniques commonly found in stage magic to confuse his enemies. Following his Hamon training, Joseph frequently combines his Hamon with other objects to perform complex and creative attacks.

History (past)

Joseph Joestar is the son of George Joestar II and Lisa Lisa (the baby saved by his grandmother Erina Pendleton during the final battle between Jonathan Joestar and Dio Brando's head). He lost his parents as a child and was raised by Erina with the help of Speedwagon. Joseph inherited the Ripple ability from his grandfather Jonathan at an early age. On one occasion, Joseph was the victim of a plane hijacking while accompanying Speedwagon. Unconcerned at first since Speedwagon was the target, Joseph kept quiet and read a comic book in a back seat. When one of the criminals punched him in the nose, Joseph's blood stained the shirt given to him by Erina, angering him. As a response to his anger, Joseph used the Hamon for the first time in public and knocked out the pilot. Joseph, Speedwagon, and the pilot survived the crash by hiding near a seat that protected them when the plane crashed into a cliff.

Historia (battle tendency)

Joseph is first introduced to us when he turns 18 and is living a prosperous life in New York City. Joseph is introduced early in the story when he helps Smokey Brown, a young African-American pickpocket who stole his wallet and was having trouble with a couple of corrupt police officers whom he helps get rid of with the Ripple. Later that day, Joseph and Erina learn from a mafia gangster that Speedwagon has been killed by Straizo. Knowing that he would come for him, JoJo prepares to face him using his innate ability with the Ripple and his wits. JoJo confronts him, defeating him and obtaining clues about Speedwagon, who is apparently alive, and about some mysterious Pillar Men.

Relations

Jonathan Joestar: Joseph did not have complete knowledge about his grandfather before his battle with Straizo due to Speedwagon keeping everything that happened a few years ago a secret. However, he has great respect for him due to his relationship with his grandmother Erina and his friendship with Speedwagon. Erina Joestar: Joseph and Erina are very close due to Erina raising Joseph throughout his youth in the absence of his parents. Erina loves Joseph very much, but is quite harsh towards him due to his indiscipline. Lisa Lisa: Joseph never knew his mother and thought she had died in an accident. He meets Lisa Lisa thinking she is just a Hamon user who is not related to him, and her severity and skill in Hamon quickly put an end to Joseph's arrogance and belligerence. Robert EO Speedwagon: Despite his brash attitude, Joseph cared for Speedwagon and saw him as an uncle. Caesar Anthonio Zeppeli: Due to their conflicting personalities, the two did not get along during their first meeting. It was not until they climbed to the top of the pillar, in his training with Lisa Lisa, that Joseph began to respect Caesar's skills and gradually came to see him as a fairly competent partner during their 26-day training session. The trust between the two grew to a point where Joseph expected Caesar to finish the missing link of the icicle chain after he had fallen off the cliff during his first meeting with Kars.
