early life Rhaena Targaryen was born in 23 AC on Dragonstone to King Aenys I Targaryen and Queen Alyssa Velaryon. She was the first grandchild of Aegon I Targaryen, and her birth was celebrated with great joy. Named after her late grandmother, Queen Rhaenys, Rhaena grew up in a royal environment surrounded by her siblings and the court. As a child, she was shy and preferred the company of animals over people, but she blossomed into a beautiful young woman with a fierce spirit as she bonded with her dragon, Dreamfyre. marriage to aegon In 41 AC, at the age of eighteen, Rhaena was betrothed to her younger brother Aegon, who was fifteen at the time. This incestuous union drew condemnation from the Faith of the Seven, which had already strained relations with House Targaryen due to their historical practices of marrying within the family. Despite this opposition, Rhaena and Aegon were wed in a ceremony that took place amidst growing unrest in Westeros. The Uprising Against Aenys Following their marriage, King Aenys decided to send Rhaena and Aegon on a royal progress through the realm. However, they faced hostility from the populace due to their controversial union. The situation escalated when King Aenys died in 42 AC under mysterious circumstances amid an uprising led by the Faith Militant against his rule. Life Under Maegor I After Maegor’s ascension to power, Rhaena and Aegon sought refuge at Casterly Rock but were eventually forced to flee again after Maegor’s forces began hunting them down. During this time, Rhaena gave birth to twin daughters: Aerea and Rhaella. Tragically, Aegon was killed during a battle against Maegor’s forces in 43 AC. After Maegor’s ascension to power, Rhaena and Aegon sought refuge at Casterly Rock but were eventually forced to flee again after Maegor’s forces began hunting them down. During this time, Rhaena gave birth to twin daughters: Aerea and Rhaella. Tragically, Aegon was killed during a battle against Maegor’s forces in 43 AC. In 47 AC, after years of turmoil and political maneuvering by Maegor—who had taken multiple wives—Rhaena was compelled to marry him as one of his “Black Brides.” Although she became queen consort through this marriage, it was marked by resentment; she attempted to kill Maegor on their wedding night but failed. Rebellion Against Maegor Rhaena remained loyal to her children and her brother Jaehaerys I’s claim to the throne. When Jaehaerys raised an army against Maegor’s tyranny in 48 AC, Rhaena escaped King’s Landing on Dreamfyre with Blackfyre (the Valyrian steel sword) and joined Jaehaerys’s cause. Following Maegor’s death—rumored to be suicide—Jaehaerys ascended as king.

Queen in the West and East After Jaehaerys claimed the throne, discussions arose regarding Rhaena’s claim as his elder sister; however, she ultimately supported Jaehaerys’s rule over her own claims or those of her daughters. She spent time on Fair Isle before marrying Androw Farman in secret—a decision that angered her mother Alyssa Velaryon. Later known as “the Queen in the West,” Rhaena returned to Dragonstone where she became “the Queen in the East.” However, tragedy struck again when Elissa Farman stole dragon eggs from Dragonstone for personal gain. This betrayal led to further heartbreak for Rhaena when Androw poisoned several of her close companions before taking his own life. Final Years Devastated by loss and betrayal, Rhaena fell into deep depression following these events. Her daughter Aerea went missing for a year before returning only to die shortly thereafter from an unknown illness believed linked to Valyria’s ruins. Afterward, Rhaena withdrew from public life and ruled Harrenhal until her death in 73 AC.

Rhaena had lively lilac eyes and silver-gold hair. She was small at birth, but happy and healthy. By the age of fourteen, Rhaena had grown into a beautiful young girl. Rhaena was a shy, dreamy child, more comfortable with animals than other children. She would often hide behind her parents as a child when near strangers, and never warmed to any of the female companions her mother presented her with. She much more preferred books. After bonding with her dragon Dreamfyre, however, Rhaena began to outgrow her shyness. After she had flown for the first time, though she remained a quiet child, she could no longer be considered timid. Shortly thereafter, Rhaena made her first friend. Numerous female favorites would follow throughout her life. Rhaena had an exquisite singing voice. At eighteen, Rhaena was considered brave, fierce and headstrong. As an adult, she was sometimes stern and sometimes shy, frequently brooding. Rhaena had no interest in other people's children, but was possessive of her own, and of people she loved. She was furious when betrayed, and scornful of those she did not trust. Due to numerous betrayals and tragedies in her later life, Rhaena became withdrawn and detached. In her last years, her hair turned completely white.
