Atsushi Nakajima

Appearance

Appearance Atsushi has light grey hair, pale skin, and is of average height with a slim build. He has segmental heterochromia, which consists of purple with yellow along the lower curve of his pupil. His hair is short and combed forward in loose spikes with a long lock on the right side of his face. This uneven style is a result of the bullying he suffered at the hands of other orphans at the orphanage, and he never fixed it. Additionally, he has a prominent black streak in his hair. Initially, he wore rags from the orphanage. After joining the Armed Detective Agency, he is given a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows by Doppo Kunikida, a loose black tie by Akiko Yosano. Black pants by Yukichi Fukuzawa, black fingerless gloves by Ranpo Edogawa, suspenders by Kenji Miyazawa, and a long black belt by Osamu Dazai. When he transforms into a partial tiger, his eyes become like tiger eyes and he develops fangs. If he is more drastic, his limbs become those of a tiger and his tail emerges. When he finally develops considerable control over his ability, he can completely transform into a white tiger with black stripes and retains the tiger's golden eyes. When transformed into Rashōmon, along with her Moonlight Beast ability, she wears Ryūnosuke Akutagawa's black coat and her tiger claws become longer.

Personality

Atsushi is enthusiastic and passionate, caring deeply for his fellow members of the Armed Detective Agency and the well-being of civilians and people in bad situations. During his entrance exam that all members must pass to join the Agency, he is confronted with a simulated bomb threat. He uses his body to cover the bomb and protect the other members, whom he has never met. His traumatic past affects much of his daily life, and he is tormented by nightmares, flashbacks, and the internal monologue of the orphanage director who abused him. He has a very low sense of self-worth and is somewhat naive, which makes him initially feel helpless when faced with dangerous situations. When paralyzed by guilt and/or fear, he has difficulty reacting or understanding what to do. He also tends to react strongly and take things at face value, trusting the judgment of others over his own, even abandoning his own instincts. For example, when he learns of the seven billion yen bounty on his head, he becomes convinced that he is putting the Agency at risk. He feels deeply guilty and decides to leave, believing that it will prevent the Agency from being attacked. He has a strong sense of morality, which also stems directly from his upbringing. He believes that his worth in life depends on his ability to protect others and has an aversion to the abuse of power and preventable deaths. He values ​​life and tries to help even his enemies at times. This is seen through his interactions with Kyōka, Lucy, and Sigma and during his battles with Akutagawa. However, on the other hand, Atsushi has a black-and-white, binary view of morality and the good and evil in the world.

Skills

Beast Under the Moonlight (月げっ下か獣じゅう, Gekka-jū?) gives Atsushi the ability to transform into a white tiger. At first, he doesn't seem to have much control over the transformation, probably due to the fact of being unaware of his status. After becoming an official member of the Agency and under the influence of All Men Are Equal, he gains more control over his transformations, as shown in his second fight with Akutagawa, when he breaks the transformation in his arms to escape. It also highlights that Atsushi has extreme regenerative powers capable of healing dissection and amputation almost instantly. He has proven to possess immense speed, durability, strength, energy and endurance on several occasions. He has also shown himself to be a natural close-quarters fighter in combat and has proven to be very cunning in several fights. However, after using his ability, Atsushi appears to end up unconscious.
