Obanai is a young man of short stature, with pale skin and a rather muscular build. He has straight black hair of varying lengths, the longest reaching to his shoulders, and the shortest ending at his cheekbones, which he removes with two shorter strands hanging between his eyes. His eyes are almond—shaped, tilted upwards from the far sides and have a unique color due to the fact that Obanai has heterochromia - his right eye is yellow and his left is turquoise. He is partially blind, barely sees with his right eye.[4] Obanai's mouth is usually hidden by a bandage he wears on the lower part of his face to hide the large facial scars that were the result of his family horribly cutting his mouth to resemble a snake's mouth.[5] He wears a dark blue version of the standard Demon Slayer uniform, as well as a black and white striped haori, the hem and cuffs of which are striped along the length, rather than vertically, which covers his arms. Obanai also wears bandages instead of bandages on his calves, giving a resemblance to kyahan, as well as another set of bandages covering his mouth, and white with blue dawns on his legs. Obanai is a very harsh and strict person who shows no concern for those who do not follow the rules of the Demon Slayer Corps. His expectations regarding his fellow Demon Slayers are completely unrealistic, as he was seen scolding Tengen Uzui for inflicting severe wounds on the "weakest" Top Rank and telling him to "fight to the death" when Tengen insisted on resigning. Tengen's retirement also highlights Obanai's dedication to the future of the Demon Slayer Corps, often at the expense of others, such as when he ties up lower-ranked Demon Slayers and uses them as obstacles during Hashira's training for relatively minor reasons. He also considers the new Demon Slayer recruits weak and incapable of improvement, expressing extreme surprise when Tengen informs him that Tanjiro Kamado survived the battle with Ducky and Gyutaro. Obanai has a fairly common habit of pointing an accusing finger at people, scolding them or speaking ill of someone.

Increased strength: Despite his short stature and less physical strength due to his upbringing, especially compared to other Hashiro, Obanai still possesses tremendous physical strength, which is seen when he presses Tanjiro to the ground with such force that he cannot move or breathe.[21]During Hashira's training, it was noticed that he was able to parry and attack the larger and more physically imposing Sanemi during their sparring, which led them both to assume that they were apparently fighting neck and neck.[22] He could also cut the body of Muzan Kibutsuji many times. Obanai was also one of the few Demon Slayers able to turn his Nichirin Sword bright red with one gripping power, the other being Muichiro Tokito. Great speed and reflexes: As Hashira, Obanai has a superhuman level of speed and reflexes. When Tanjiro almost received a fatal blow from Muzan, Obanai managed to jump up and save him in time. He was able to withstand the lashing attacks of the Kibutsuji Muzan for a long period of time without the reinforcement granted by the Demon Slayer Badge, and still managed to deal the Demon King many blows. After awakening the mark, Obanai was fast enough to cut off both of Muzan's limbs. Twisted Nichirin Katana: Obanai carries around a heavily modified Nichirin katana similar in appearance to an Indonesian Kris Sword, with the blade's shape modeled into waves resembling a slithering snake. It is lavender in color. His katana's tsuba has a gold circular shape engraved with two snakes connected by several plant-like patterns. His handle is light blue and decorated with a twisting wrap of magenta cord. As a Hashira, the words Destroyer of Demons (惡あっ鬼き滅めっ殺さつ, Akki Messatsu?) are engraved on the side of the blade. Obanai also carries along a special scabbard made of leather held together by a weak magnetic pull that opens up whenever he uses his katana. It is designed so that Obanai unsheathes his sword vertically instead of horizontally.
