Choi Nam-ra (Korean: 최남라) is a female deuteragonist. She is considered the best student at Hyosa High School.

Pre-Apocalypse

Nam-ra's mother donated a large sum of money to the school; in exchange, the principal made her class president. No one considered her class president because of this, as some students could be heard mocking her because of her silence. She usually only studied alone and was aware that others did not consider her class president, as seen when Lee Su-hyeok spoke to her and commented that she was class president when he suggested that they visit Kim Hyeon- ju at the hospital before Nam-ra responded that she knew no one in her class considered her class president because they knew how she got the title, so she didn't bother taking her title seriously.

After the Apocalypse

When the outbreak began, she was walking while reading a book; Because she was wearing wireless headphones and listening to music, she didn't notice the panic happening around her until Su-hyeok ran up to her and grabbed her, and the pair fled from the approaching zombies. Later, while fleeing through the school, the two used a ladder to climb to the window of a classroom on the second floor of the school, where Nam On-jo and the other surviving students were hiding, noticed them and helped them inside. Later, after Kang Jin-gu zombiefied and infected Kim Min-ji, she and the others fled into the hallways where they were able to reach the science laboratory upstairs. There they blocked the doors, but Su-hyeok had separated from the group and hid in the art room. Not long after hiding in the science room, the group realized that their barricade would eventually fail, so they used a fire hose to go down to the broadcast room where their English teacher, Park Sun-hwa, was hiding. . Before Nam-ra left, she left a note for Su-hyeok in case he came to the science room. He would later arrive at the broadcast room after using the windows to head to his location.

After the Apocalypse 2

When the group used the intercom to distract the zombies, they ran towards the music room where Su-hyeok stayed behind to defend them from the zombies. On the staircase he was left behind, but Nam-ra noticed this and returned for him, where she saw him being attacked by Yoon Gwi-nam. She tried to push Gwi-nam away from Su-hyeok, but he attacked her and bit her wrist. Su-hyeok became angry after seeing her hurt and pushed Gwi-nam out of a nearby window, and then she and Su-hyeok would run back towards the music room together. While the group was in the music room they noticed the wound on her wrist. Su-hyeok said that Gwi-nam bit her, but Lee Cheong-san said that he saw Gwi-nam being bitten by zombies, causing the group to fear that she would turn into a zombie. Later, he began to mutate into a zombie and had the urge to bite Su-hyeok, but resisted; she is shown to have become a halfbie. Some of the students, fearing for their lives, wanted Nam-ra to leave the room, but Su-hyeok refused to let her leave, instead tying himself and her together so that if she turned around, only would attack him. While the group was in the music room, some discussed her status, Yang Dae-su would mention the name halfbie referring to being infected but still having intelligence to make rational decisions and choices.

After the Apocalypse 3

When the group was attacked by Gwi-nam on the stairs, she went into hybrid state and used it to defend the group from Gwi-nam, throwing him down the stairs. Later, while the group was on the rooftop, Nam-ra hoped that one day, when the outbreak was over, they could sit together around a campfire like they were doing, calling the group their friends. Later, when Gwi-nam attacked the group on the rooftop, after noticing that she was also half-blood, he tried to convince her to turn on the group, but she refused and then threw him off the roof. During the storm she was the one who alerted the group about the danger in the gym and also about the bombing of Hyosan High School. Later, she returned with On-jo to the ruins of the construction site in hopes of finding Cheong-san; after claiming that she couldn't smell anything alive, she comforted On-jo as she accepted Cheong-san's (unconfirmed) death. Later, as the group made their way through the forest, she suspected that the main reason the military bombed the school despite knowing there were survivors there was because she was mixed race. After the group headed to a nearby town, she sensed zombies and urged the group to run, but they stayed due to Dae-su's injured leg. She kills several zombies during the fight, later when Jang Wu-jin became a zombie, she killed him in front of everyone, but Park Mi-jin scolded her for not apologizing to Jang Ha-ri for killing her brother in front of them to her.

After the Apocalypse 4

Later, as the group headed to the military checkpoint, Nam-ra began to have uncontrollable desires to eat her friends. Realizing the danger she posed, she fled from the group. However, Su-hyeok and On-jo noticed her absence and ran to look for her, where they found her eating a corpse. After calling her, he yelled at them to get away before lunging at On-jo, but she was able to control herself and ran away from them. Nam-ra had a personalized message written on the memorial tree. It translates to "Nam-ra, come back." Months later, she lit a fire on the roof of the school in the hopes that her friends would see it and during this time she may have met other surviving halfbies in the city. She finally met up with her friends, after they went to her fire on the roof, she had a conversation with them and explained her situation before leaving after presumably hearing other halfbies calling out to her.

Physical Appearance

Nam-ra has a pale complexion and long, shiny, deep black hair. Several characters find her attractive and Su-hyeok tells her that he thinks she is very beautiful. She wears the standard Hyosan High School female uniform. In the flashback of Episode 1, she was seen wearing Hyosan High School's summer female uniform. After reaching the science room, she took off her bun. After becoming a half-breed, her right eye is shown to be affected by the virus and would turn red whenever she experienced extreme emotions, which she hid with a blindfold. When she joins the others on the roof, she wears a light-colored zip-up hoodie with rainbow stripes on the sleeves.

Personality

Despite being attractive, class president, and the valedictorian of Hyosan High School, Nam-ra was an emotionally withdrawn outcast who was shunned by her peers, who perceived her introverted behavior as elitist and conceited. In reality, she was a lonely girl forced to keep her distance from others, as her rich and overbearing mother influenced every aspect of her life, causing students to stigmatize Nam-ra as a princess who was being groomed for marriage. success, especially when her mother's large donation to the school unfairly influenced her election as class president. The zombie outbreak finally caused Nam-ra to come out of her shell; Spending time with her fellow students (outside of her books and music through her headphones) created the first emotional bonds she ever had, including her low-key romance with Lee Su-hyeok. Becoming infected with the zombie virus and mutating her immunity into a zombie-human hybrid, she would test these bonds to the limit: as her unique powers grew along with her desire to protect her new friends, so did the hideous monster that grew inside her, wanting to devour them all.
