Appearance

Leo is an emerald green anthropomorphic ninja turtle warrior. His eyes have sapphire blue irises with black pupils, but like his brothers when shown fighting or being stealthy, they disappear, leaving his eyes white. He wears a royal blue bandana-mask. He is the most skilled fighter, and does not have many changes in his physical appearance like all of his previous incarnations, except for the fact that his green skin is slightly darker than the others. His height ranges between that of Raphael and Donatello. His ninja gear includes brown knee and elbow pads, and beige wrapped bandages around his wrists, ankles, and fingers. However, unlike previous incarnations, his hands have two fingers and a thumb (like his brothers) and his feet also only have three toes. He doesn't wear clothes like shirts or pants, only equipment for his shell and front plaston, he doesn't have any hair on his entire body and he doesn't have hair either, being a bald turtle but with soft skin

Personality

Leonardo is the most serious, mature and focused of the team. Being the designated leader of the group, Leonardo is very enthusiastic about his role. He is also a huge science fiction fan (or "nerd" as referred to by his brother Raphael). His favorite series is "Space Heroes", while his favorite character from the series is Captain Ryan. Leonardo has a habit of memorizing Captain Ryan's best lines from the series and sometimes repeating them during battle. Leonardo is so caught up with Space Heroes that he relies on Ryan's character traits rather than his own intuition, which often causes his brothers (especially Raphael) to question his leadership. For the most part, he tries to be the mature and responsible brother, but there are occasional moments where he can be just as childish as his brothers, such as mocking Donatello for losing to a mutant ape and trying to be like a realistic TV character, although Leonardo often tries to comfort his brothers when they are scared or upset, especially Michelangelo. His attempts to appear strong can also backfire, as he makes rather cliché or ridiculous statements when trying to intimidate his enemies, such as introducing the team as the "Mighty Mutants" or "Turtles of Justice" while trying to appear heroic, or telling a scientist experimenting on apes that they had had enough of his "cutesy stuff". Raphael often expresses his lack of patience for these occurrences. Overall, he is a helpful, adventurous, brave, responsible, hardworking, protective, honorable, respectful, and enthusiastic ninjutsu prodigy with a "can do" attitude. He is the most serious, disciplined, cool-headed, mature, spiritual, stoic, level-headed, calm, courageous, and focused of the team.

History

Leonardo and his brothers were once ordinary turtles; as babies, they were adopted from a pet store by Hamato Yoshi (Splinter). On his way home, he caught a glimpse of a man (Kraangdroid), something caught his attention about this guy and he decided to follow him; unfortunately the Kraang found him and tried to kill him, but Splinter fought back. In the end, the Kraang dropped a can of mutagen causing the turtles and Splinter to mutate. Splinter came into contact with a rat, thus mutating into a rat, and the turtles came into contact with a human, thus mutating into humanoid turtles. Splinter took them into the sewers and trained them in the art of ninjutsu. He named the Turtles after his favourite Renaissance artists. Leonardo (the turtle) was named after the artist Leonardo Da Vinci. Together with his brothers Leo lived in the sewers for 15 years before being allowed to go to the surface.

Leo is a very skilled martial artist and a great swordsman. His weapon is a pair of Katana Swords, and he uses a traditional Niten-Ryu style. He has a good line of defense, and is the best in combat and infiltration strategies. He is a ninja with well-balanced levels in terms of strength, speed, agility, cunning, and intelligence. Like his brothers, Leo can move anywhere without raising suspicion, jump across building rooftops, and use grappling hooks without difficulty. He also knows how to drive the Turtle-Mobile and the Turtle-Motorcycle.

Techniques you master:

Kenjutsu: Handling of Katanas. Sheishienteki Kyoyo (purification of the soul): is knowledge of oneself, one's power, endurance and weaknesses, as well as their influence on life. A ninja must be clear about his intentions. This knowledge could mean the difference between life and death. (From The Conquest of the Spirit). Taijutsu (unarmed combat): hand-to-hand combat. Shurikenjutsu: ability to throw shurikens. Kayakujutsu (meaning "gunpowder techniques"): use of explosives such as Smoke Bombs. Shinobi-iri, Ninjutsu techniques that develop all types of movement or silent displacement for infiltration on deck. Boryaku (strategy): using original methods to deceive or conspire, as well as using the various events and circumstances of each situation to one's advantage. Tantojutsu: handling of the tanto. Archery: In both A Turtle with a Difficult Temperament and The Challenge, it is seen that Leo knows how to handle the bow and arrow. He uses them as his main weapon in The Conquest of the Spirit. Kusarijutsu: use of chains in combat. Intonjutsu (escape and camouflage): This technique is the one he practices in Muta Man (episode). Sui-Ren or Suijutsu (training in water): Since he is a turtle, this is an almost innate ability for Leo to be able to swim in a hidden and silent manner. As seen in New Friend, Old Enemy. Healing Hands: This technique of the 9 "seals" allows him to heal himself or his allies from damage, mainly poisoning. It is first seen in The Deadly Poison.

Summary

Human-tall mutant turtle, also referred to as Leo, is one of the main protagonists of the 2012 3D animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the leader of the Ninja Turtles, as well as being the eldest of all the brothers, who shares a home in the sewers of New York City. He wields twin ninjaken. He belongs to a diverse family consisting of three other mutant turtles who are his brothers: Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo; and Splinter, who serves as the Turtles' adoptive father and sensei. Due to his unwavering dedication to ninjutsu, (and in part because he asked for it), Splinter chose Leonardo to be the leader of the Turtles.
