History

Zac is the product of a Zaun experiment to create a hexchemically engineered super-soldier, the Zaun Amorphous Combatant. Combining brute strength with limitless flexibility, he’s a versatile takedown beast – a creative fighter who bounces off obstacles and forces his enemies into obedience. Though created inside a weapons lab, Zac was rescued and adopted by two loving parents who raised him to be a kind, friendly child. Over the years, he grew into a fierce hero sworn to protect the common people of Zaun. Long ago, scientists in Zaun developed an organic substance that could withstand extreme conditions, spontaneously alter its biological structure, and generate enormous amounts of kinetic energy. The husband-and-wife scientists watched the prototype grow from a spoon-sized droplet into a tiny blob, and then noticed that their creation responded to their presence. It leapt forward when called and bounced when sung. The couple began to see more than just an experiment in this—they saw a little boy, full of love and joy. One night, after performing some tests on the prototype, the scientists placed the blob back in its cage. It hunched and shuddered in a corner, disconsolately sad. At that moment, the couple realized that their beloved creation longed for a free life outside the laboratory. They were stunned by the discovery of its consciousness; they could not allow the prototype to be used as a weapon. The couple fled with the young blob, and replaced its weapon designation, CAZ (Zaun Amorphous Combatant), with a name of their own: Zac. In a quiet environment far from the cities of Zaun, the scientists raised Zac as if he were their own son.

Story 2

Zac was never like the other children. None of them were as strong and flexible as he was, so the couple taught him the difference between right and wrong and how to use his gifts responsibly. Thanks to the love and care of his loving parents, Zac lived a happy and peaceful childhood. That childhood ended when Zac was found by the lab in Zaun. Unable to replicate the formula to create the amorphous prototype, the lab never stopped searching for the scientists and their experiment. When they found the family, they threatened to separate them. The workers kidnapped Zac's parents and demanded that the couple help capture him and return. Overcome by fear of losing his freedom and his parents, Zac unleashed every ounce of his energy and mass for the first time. He tamed his parents' captors, drove the lab workers away, and brought his loved ones home. From then on, Zac swore to defend the lives of ordinary people, threatened by extraordinary cruelty and betrayal. He was created to destroy, but now he protects the innocent and defenseless. Biography

Zac is the product of a toxic spill that fell down a technochemical seam and pooled in a deep cavern in the Zaun Sinkhole. Despite his humble origins, Zac has evolved from a primordial substance into a sentient being that lives in the city's pipes, emerging from time to time to aid those unable to protect themselves or rebuild Zaun's broken infrastructure. A group of Zaunite children found Zac when they were throwing rocks into a puddle and someone was throwing them back. The "puddle that returns everything" became known among the inhabitants of Zaun and eventually caught the attention of a suspicious group of technochemical alchemists. Due to protests from the residents, the alchemists removed the contents of the puddle into containers and took the substance back to their laboratories to experiment on. Through a series of experiments designed to test positive and negative reinforcement techniques, the alchemists discovered that the coagulated mass within the puddle seemed to have psychotropic tendencies. In other words, it mimicked whatever stimulus was provided to it. If treated well, it responded with childlike joy, but when tested with pain and aggression, the alchemists lost many amplified fighters in the resulting destruction.

Most of the alchemists chalked it up to simple reflex, but two of them weren’t so sure. They questioned the morality of experiments that seemed aimed at producing an extraordinarily aggressive creature. When the pair investigated further, they discovered that the project was being funded by Saito Takeda, a chembaron known for his violent temper and bloody war tactics. The implication was clear: Takeda sought to develop a fighter immune to mortal wounds, that would go where humans cannot go, and that would obey any command. They also discovered the true name of the project: the Amorphous Fighter of Zaun. As they decided how best to proceed, the two dissident alchemists saw more than just a reflection of the stimulus applied to the viscous gel. They observed behaviors that occurred without any obvious stimulus, behaviors consistent with consciousness. They knew the creature as Zac and concluded that it exhibited behaviors of a being that could think and feel. They took their findings to the leader of the research team, but he ignored their concerns.

Unwilling to let it go, they began their own covert efforts to counter the violent teachings of the rest of their team. They sought to teach Zac the difference between right and wrong, exposing him to acts of altruism and generosity. Their efforts paid off, as Zac was shown to feel sad when one of the researchers hurt her hand and reacted badly when they killed a rat in the lab. Eventually, they could no longer tolerate the cruel experiments their fellow alchemists were testing on Zac. One night, during the Zaun Progress Day commemoration, when the lab was empty, they moved Zac into a septic tank and took him to a very remote part of Zaun. Zac rejected such behaviors and helped his parents when they used their skills to help people around them without attracting attention. They did what they could to treat the sick, fix broken machinery, or whatever other benevolent uses they could put their chemistry knowledge to. These were Zac's golden years, and he wandered Zaun through its nearly limitless network of pipes and the many cracks in its bedrock. Though Zac was a sentient being, if he received too much stimuli from his environment, his senses would become overwhelmed, causing him to temporarily absorb the dominant emotions around him, for better or worse. Many times he couldn't help but help the downtrodden and trample on the abusive. This caused rumors of his presence to spread throughout Zaun. While most stories told of how he helped, others attributed destructive events to him: a destroyed factory or a rift opening up in the neighborhood.

Eventually, these rumors reached Saito Takeda's ears, and he sent a band of amplified thieves to reclaim what he considered his property. His alchemists had been unsuccessfully attempting to replicate the process that created Zac from drops left in his container. He was too late to save them, and the fury that gripped him at the sight of their corpses was something the Baron's men had never seen before. Zac attacked with ferocity, stretching, crushing, and laying waste. In his grief and fury, he demolished dozens of nearby homes, and by the time the battle was over, all of the amplified thieves were dead. As the intense emotions of battle left Zac's consciousness, he was overcome with remorse at the sight of the homes he had destroyed, and vowed to continue the good work his parents had done. He helped rebuild what he had destroyed, but as soon as the job was finished, he disappeared into Zaun's vast network of pipes.

Now Zac lives alone, in the tunnels and caverns that crisscross Zaun, absorbing the emotions of the city's inhabitants. Sometimes this enriches him, but other times it saddens him, as he takes in both the good and the bad of the city. He became an urban legend among the people of Zaun, a mysterious creature that sometimes emerges from between the cracks in the rocks or from a section of damaged pipes.
