History

As the Special Victims Unit's resident psychiatrist, Huang helps keep officers sane in a field that could drive ordinary people insane. He has also served as the squad's resident criminal profiler and occasional translator for Chinese-speaking suspects and victims. A staunch advocate for human rights, Huang has had occasional clashes with criminal-hating Detective Elliot Stabler. One notable incident of this conflict came when Stabler exploited the delusions of a schizophrenic suspect to agitate him enough to justify the use of drugs. The drugs brought the suspect back to his senses enough to divulge the location of a small child he had kidnapped, but Huang believed this was unjustified and was even willing to testify for the defense that the suspect had been coerced through drugs ("Coerced") However, there were times when they got along, and Huang comforted Stabler over the death of a child.

History

Huang also advocates for the well-being of other people, regardless of whether they are patients under his care or not. In order to help a drug user lose his addiction altogether, Huang took him to a clinic that administered an illegal drug, even though he could have lost his medical license. ("Users") Huang took responsibility and reported his actions, only suffering a thirty-day suspension. He was visibly disturbed by the use of electroshock therapy on mentally ill patients by Dr. Stanton, another psychiatrist, stating that it was an ineffective treatment and only a short-term, temporary solution at best. ("Scammed") Since there is a desperate need for them, he does not believe that selling human organs is wrong as long as the seller is willing and healthy afterwards. Early in his career as a psychiatrist, Huang worked as a counselor for sex offenders, motivated by a genuine belief that he could rehabilitate them. However, he left his job after a few years, frustrated by his patients' unwillingness to actually engage in therapy. As a special agent assigned to the FBI's New York City office, he was assigned to the 16th Detective Squad to help catch the very criminals he once treated.

History

The reason for his departure is not revealed until the season thirteen episode, "Father Dearest", in which Dr. Huang returns to the SVU team temporarily to assist with an investigation and tells them about his new assignment in Oklahoma City. Huang returns to New York in the season 14 episode, "Born Psychopath", and assists the SVU detectives with a case involving a boy who has become increasingly violent toward those close to him. He diagnoses the boy with antisocial personality disorder and arranges for him to be admitted to a treatment facility. He took early retirement and went into consulting. He was later hired by Lewis Hodda's defense team.
