Miles Prower (マイルズ・プラウアー, lit. Mairuzu Purauā?), better known by his nickname "Tails" (テイルス, lit. Teirusu?), is a character in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, created by SEGA. He is a small anthropomorphic fox with two tails, thanks to which he has the ability to fly (due to the rapid spinning of these) and swim. Thanks to his ability to fly and his considerable speed, he became the adventure companion of Sonic the Hedgehog, who is his best friend. Accompanied by his great intelligence and excellent mechanical skills, Tails works as a great companion during adventures, always helping others with a humble attitude. His first appearance was in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit), although he also had his own video games: Tails' Skypatrol (a video game that did not leave Japan until the arrival of Sonic Gems Collection) and Tails Adventure. Although in his first appearance, the color of his fur was light brown, it was changed to orange in Sonic Adventure, then to light yellow in Sonic Heroes, recovering the orange in Sonic Unleashed.

Tails creation concept and tails appearance

Concept and creation In 1992, Yasushi Yamaguchi designed Tails in an internal competition within his own company. His name, "Miles Prower", is homophonous with the English pronunciation of "Miles Per Hour", a clear reference to Sonic's speed. His design won, but Sonic Team imposed the condition that the character's name be changed from "Miles" to "Tails". Yamaguchi then requested that "Miles" be his real name, but that he have as his pseudonym the one proposed by Sonic Team, his name being defined as Miles "Tails" Prower. Tails was redesigned (like the rest of Sonic characters) by Yuji Uekawa, for the video game Sonic Adventure, changing as mentioned before the color, and also, they made his eyes blue. Appearance Tails Sonic A. 2 Tails is an anthropomorphic fox with two orange-fur tails that covers most of his body with white fur on his snout with four whiskers on each side, torso and the tips of his tails, a three-dendrite fringe on his head and light blue eyes. He wears two red sneakers with white tips and cuffs, a pair of white gloves with cuffs similar to those of his sneakers and two black bracelets placed on the wrists of the gloves and anklets. He is 80 centimeters tall and weighs 20 kilos (age, height and weight vary depending on the different versions).

He has great intelligence, genius and mechanical skills. He is able to create his own high-quality inventions, and he often repairs complex mechanisms to help his friends. Tails has a generous attitude towards people, always helping others without expecting anything in return and is humble about his achievements and feats. Tails also has his weaknesses: he has a great fear of thunder and is not always good at keeping secrets, as seen in Sonic Adventure 2 where he accidentally revealed Sonic's plan to Dr. Eggman. At first he used to be shy, but he has progressively become more open and even playful, although without losing his good manners. Like his best friend Sonic, Tails also enjoys pranks, especially if they are directed at Eggman. In his early years, due to his shyness, Tails was often a bit "insecure" and would just be Sonic's sidekick. Later, thanks to Sonic's words and his own exploits, Tails understood how important it was to stand on his own two feet and not depend on Sonic all the time. From that game onward, Tails has become more independent and has spent more time away from Sonic. He is still his partner and friend, but now he prefers to spend more time alone so he can build more inventions. Still, when he finds himself in trouble, he can always count on Sonic to help him out.

Despite being humble, he tends to take it to heart when someone criticizes his inventions with bad intentions (such as when Wave the Swallow criticized his skateboard) or when he feels that he is being undervalued, becoming offended when Sonic recruited Eggman to build the Extractor despite because he himself is also capable of building it. In a Nintendo Power poll of Video Game Buddies, Tails came in second place. Tails is one of the few characters who may be able to move at super speeds. In the 2000s, his gender was often confusing to some players, and he was addressed as a girl in some games. This was due to the fact that there were no proper translations of the game manuals in the past, and Tails was adapted as a female character in the animated series Sonic Satam. He is the third most famous character in the saga, after Sonic and Shadow. During Sonic Frontiers, the character of Tails appears to break the fourth wall when he describes himself as "inconsistent", referencing being a character with different scripted handles in different games and series of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Interestingly, in real life there has been research done that the real life gene called SHH (sonic hedgehog) is a factor that causes beings to have more than one limb[4], as in the case of Tails who has more than one tail.
