This is shown in Basics in Behavior when he befriends Claire and then later is willing to risk his life to save her from Miss Circle.

Basics in Behavior Engel is seen in Miss Circle’s math class, looking annoyed at Oliver, Zip, and Edward as they throw trash and paper airplanes at Claire. He later befriends Claire in the library, and the two talk, before Claire is abruptly picked up by Edward’s drone and tossed down a hole. Engel later appears in the episode to protect Claire, stopping Miss Circle's compass as she’s about to kill Claire, giving her time to run. He is then thrown against the wall, causing his right eye to bleed black ink, turning red. Upon seeing Claire’s corpse, he is distraught seeing her in such a horrific state.
