Simon Riley had a very traumatic childhood growing up in Manchester, England, because of his heartless father. Most days, his father would bring back dangerous animals and tease him with them, even forcing him to kiss a snake or threatening to kill him with them. As he and his younger brother, Tommy, grew older, Tommy would always wear a skull mask at night to scare Simon. Simon's father would sometimes take him to Bone Lickers concerts. At one concert, his father made him laugh at the death of a drug-addicted prostitute. Simon used to be an apprentice butcher in a grocery store when he was growing up. After the 9/11 attacks, he joined the military. He was an experienced soldier which led him to the SAS

Task Force 141

At one point, he was sent alone against terrorists at an elementary school in Ukraine. He deliberately got caught and told the terrorists and children about his past before the rest of his team arrived to free him and the children. A girl asked if the story of Simon "Ghost" Riley was true and if Riley was Ghost. He responded by saying "true enough for this lot."

Infiltration of Russian oil platform and rescue of prisoner 627

He participated in the infiltration of the Russian oil rig that was being used as a makeshift SAM site on the only easy day... it was yesterday to rescue the hostages. After clearing the oil rig, Ghost participated in the operation to rescue Prisoner 627 from a Russian gulag. He took control of the gulag's security systems and guided Soap and Roach to the prisoner.
