Appearance
Nanami was a man with a well-proportioned body and was quite tall, measuring 184 centimeters. In the manga, he had two different types of hair color, one light brown [3] and the other blonde [4], styled with a side part; In the anime, his hair stays blonde. He used to have thin eyebrows and small eyes [5]. Following the events that occurred during the Shibuya Incident Arc, he lost his left eye and received multiple burns that extended from the left side of his head to his abdomen [6]. He used to be an office worker [5], so, even after he had resigned, he wore business suits. His usual attire consisted of a blue shirt, a light-colored tie with black dots [4], a blazer and tan pants [3], and on his feet he wore dress shoes. As a student at the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College, he wore the school's signature black jacket, with a fully buttoned turtleneck, black pants and shoes, he also had long hair and carried his sword sheathed inside a black suitcase [7]. After graduating from high school, he began wearing vertically striped jackets over a white button-down shirt and a dark-colored tie with white dots all over it, vertically striped pants, and black shoes.[8] During combat, he wore dark glasses that have no arms [5]; In the anime they are represented with gray color and green glasses[9]. Unlike his days as a student, he carried his sword strapped behind his back and often concealed it with his bag [10].
Personality
He was a very intelligent, reserved man with a strong sense of responsibility towards his job[5]. Originally, he was an office worker but left his old job because it did not make a significant impact on others, however, as a shaman, he felt better being able to reap small tokens of gratitude from innocent people. For example, having helped an employee at the bakery he used to go to was enough to convince him to return to his life as a shaman and be able to continue his path without regrets[8]. Beyond his tough exterior, he was a man of good moral values. He knew how to separate sentimentality from work[3], and confessed that he only followed his path as a shaman because it required more skill than working in an office[5]. Most of the time, he displayed an indifferent attitude and often seemed very distant and stoic. As one of Itadori's mentors, he is initially shown to be a stark contrast to Satoru Gojo. Unlike the latter, he claimed to strictly follow the decisions of the higher-ups and, despite having known Gojo since they both studied at the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College, he stated that he trusts and has faith in him but does not respect him despite the mutual trust between them.[5] He was very direct with his thoughts, and tended to get irritated easily, especially when it came to Itadori or his former partner, Yu Haibara[7]. At one point in the story, he even declared that he did not accept the young man as a shaman because Sukuna was inside him and, as such, he considered him a bomb that could explode at any moment[5]. His way of thinking changed when he was saved by the young man[11].
Due to the issues he experienced during his past, he treated Itadori like a child because he did not want him to let go of his youth for the simple fact of becoming a shaman[10][11]. He was aware that being a shaman was dangerous and that it is a job for people with a certain degree of madness, so it was difficult for him to respect those who dedicated themselves to such work [5]. Although he did not see a reason to have become a shaman again, he was extremely dedicated to his work and took care to carry it out in the most efficient way possible. Even after no longer being an office worker, he continued to maintain part of the structure of his old job, following a strict schedule in which he carried out his missions as a shaman, stating that he did not work after 6:00 p.m., but was willing to work. "Extra hours". Deep down, he was a man who was exhausted from his routine, feeling totally worn out and dreamed of quitting his job and going to live in a quiet place having a peaceful life so he could have that peace that he longed to have but it was impossible to achieve. Despite being someone who did not question the level of his abilities, he always felt completely useless and revealed that, after finding Kiyotaka Ijichi injured, he felt helpless at how weak he is [12]. He constantly wondered, doubted and questioned his abilities to save others. Even in the last moments of his life, it was questioned that he fled after what happened in his past, without achieving anything admirable and returned to continue as a shaman without clear motives [6]. In the end, he was just a man worn down by the daily practices of life that stole his youth, took away who he loved most, and transformed him into an adult [13].
History
Arc of The Showdown with Mahito: Gojo introduces Nanami to Yuji Itadori, because Gojo is unable to train him at the time, Nanami takes over teaching Yuji about curses. Nanami talks to Yuji and reveals what kind of sorcerer he is and what he thinks of sorcerers and work. He also lets Yuji know that he does not approve of him as a sorcerer. Yuji replies that he wants to become stronger and that he will make her approve and have his respect, to which Nanami tells Yuji to tell the superiors and not him. After this event, Nanami along with Yuji investigate the incident at the cinema, where three teenagers were found murdered by an unknown curse. Nanami begins to teach Yuji to see traces of curses and lets Yuji know that he does not praise people without reason, but rather bases it on facts; This makes Yuji think that the two of them don't get along very well[1]. As they follow the remains, Nanami and Yuji talk about how there might be a witness to the murder that they should investigate. After following the wreckage, the two end up on the roof and encounter two cursed spirits. Nanami tells Yuji to take care of one and if it gets complicated to let him know so he can help; Before this, Yuji tells him not to underestimate him, to which Nanami replies that it is not because he underestimates him, but that he is an adult and he is a child and that is why he must put his life above his own. Yuji mentions that he prefers to be underestimated than to be treated by a child, to which Nanami mentions that although he has gone through difficult situations that does not make him an adult, but rather all the despair of everyday life such as having your sandwich discontinued or that more hair appears on the pillow[2].
As they fight, Nanami begins to explain how her technique works and shows Yuji the points she attacks, ending with a curse on the demonstration. Nanami then observes Yuji and discovers how his technique works and the potential he has, realizing why Gojo sent him with him. Nanami realizes that something is wrong with the cursed spirits and stops Yuji from killing one, she shows him a photo on her cell phone which makes Yuji scared, since the curses do not appear in the photos. Nanami has the cursed spirits examined and the result given by Shoko Ieiri reveals what they already suspected: "the cursed spirits were once human"[3]. Nanami observes how this affects Yuji and begins to empathize with him and mentions that they will go all out. After learning this, the two go out to continue investigating, then discover that there have been several missing people and mysterious deaths. Due to how this mission is affecting Yuji, Nanami decides to push him away by having him investigate Junpei Yoshino, the witness they found in a security video at the cinema, meanwhile Nanami investigates the enemy base; He does this since as he mentions, Yuji is still a child[4]. Nanami heads to the sewers where he comes into contact with Mahito, the spirit that is causing these deaths; Nanami starts fighting Mahito and plans to end the fight quickly since he doesn't like working overtime. Because Nanami manages to break Mahito's arm, Mahito stops fighting to explain how his technique works and heals his arm [5].
While Mahito wonders what would happen if he uses his technique on a Grade 1 sorcerer, Nanami simply looks at his watch and says that he will finish this at six. Nanami continues to fight Mahito, resulting in Mahito injuring Nanami. Once they reach 6 o'clock, Nanami wraps his tie around his hand and begins to explain how his technique called "Overtime" works. Nanami begins to analyze the situation and then uses his technique on a wall to make a large amount of debris fall on top of them. While Mahito observes the rubble, Nanami uses his technique on him to hurt his leg and leaves, mentioning that if they both survive they would see each other again [6]. Then, an injured Nanami contacts Kiyotaka Ijichi and reveals what had happened; After hanging up, Nanami thinks about what kind of curse Mahito is and realizes that he is a child, therefore they must exorcise him quickly [7]. Later, Nagi Yoshino, Yumpei's mother, dies[8]. Yuji finds out what happened to Nanami and his confrontation with Mahito, and asks Nanami to take him next time, Nanami explains that it is not necessary and that he understands that it is not a sin to be a child. He then asks Yuji to continue watching Junpei and not interfere with the mission. The next day, Nanami deals with Mahito's cursed spirits in the sewer with Takuma Ino; Nanami contacts Yuji to not go to Junpei's school and stay at his place. Later, he leaves Ino in charge of the creatures because he thinks that Yuji is most likely going to school anyway and that this is probably a trap [9].
While Yuji was having his match against Mahito, Nanami manages to appear and defends him when Mahito was about to deliver a fatal blow to Yuji. [10] Nanami asks about the situation and Yuji reveals everything that happened and about Junpei's death. After discovering that Yuji can harm Mahito, Nanami allows Yuji to fight Mahito with him. While Nanami and Yuji fight Mahito, Mahito decides to change tactics and have modified humans attack Yuji. Nanami fights Mahito, but Mahito manages to restrain Nanami and mentions that Yuji will not be able to kill humans but Nanami trusts his student. When Mahito is about to finish off Nanami, Yuji appears and frees him. [11] Nanami and Yuji continue to fight Mahito, until Mahito uses his Mahayana Prison of Perfection to trap Nanami. Nanami thinks about the situation he is in, begins to remember his past and how the tokens of gratitude, especially from a baker, made him become a sorcerer again. In the end he comes to the conclusion that he is in the palm of Mahito's hand; Nanami prepares to die at the hands of Mahito and mentions that he does not regret anything, since he has received many tokens of gratitude. Faced with this situation, Yuji appears and Sukuna, due to his pride and whim, injures Mahito, which causes the Domain Expansion to be undone [12].
Yuji tries to finish off Mahito, but he manages to escape through a sewer, while Nanami makes plans to cut off Mahito's escape route, she notices that Yuji is lying on the ground and goes to check on him. Later that day, Nanami meets with Yuji and they talk about the situation that happened that day; Yuji mentions to Nanami that he no longer knows what a dignified death is, to which Nanami replies that not even he himself knows since in reality, most people are neither good nor bad but death is the destiny of all. Nanami concludes his words by telling Yuji that from now on people will need him, since he is a true sorcerer. In this way, Nanami recognizes Yuji as a sorcerer and encourages the young man[13]. Kyoto Exchange Festival Arc: On the day of the event, Nanami is with Gojo and they talk about what happened at Satozakura High School, they also talk about Sukuna's Finger found in Junpei Yoshino's house. Nanami explains to Gojo that he didn't tell Yuji anything so that he wouldn't feel guilty, he also explains that he gave the finger to the higher ups [14]. Nanami appears in a flackflash in which he explains the Dark Flash and explains that his record is 4 Dark Flashes [15] ..
Star Plasma Vessel Arc: In her youth, Nanami attended the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College for sorcerers and during her first year she met Yu Haibara with whom they would become good friends. Both would be assigned to the mission to support Suguru Geto and Satoru Gojo while they were in Okinawa protecting Riko Amanai[16]. A year later, Nanami joins Yu on a mission in another city, but the mission turns out to be more difficult than they think and ends with Yu's death. Once the mission is finished, Nanami is in the morgue with her eyes covered while Geto examines Yu's corpse, who explains to her that the mission was more difficult and that it turned out to be of a higher category than hers[17]. After a while, Nanami graduates from high school and decided to stop being a sorcerer because it was too painful and a total waste. Nanami then started working as a businessman, but discovered that he was just as bad since he only cared about money and was not happy. All this would change when he exorcised a cursed spirit that was causing problems for a baker and realized that he made him happy through the expressions of gratitude from the innocent. After this, Nanami decides to become a sorcerer again[18].
Shibuya Incident Arc: On October 31, Nanami meets Megumi Fushiguro and Takuma Ino in the Tokyo subway, Shibuya station, near exit 13. There she informs them about the situation in Shibuya and the chaos that is taking place due to the lowered screens. Takuma begins to tell Megumi everything about the screen, Nanami tells Takuma that Megumi already knows all that and for her to stop being a know-it-all [19]. Nanami then asks for Gojo's location since he is apparently a target. Later, when the citizens on the screen are attacked by mutated humans, Nanami along with Megumi and Takuma enter the screen to protect the people. As they head to the screen, Nanami and Megumi discuss why the mutated humans are attacking now and expresses concern about how dangerous the situation is becoming. Looking at the modified humans, Nanami thinks about Mahito and suspects that he wouldn't attack without a plan in mind. Because he doesn't want to put the young people in danger, Nanami decides that he will be the one to take care of the enemy responsible for the screens, while Megumi and Takuma will do everything they can to rescue the people [20].
Meanwhile, on the 5th floor of the Tokyo Metro on the Fukutoshin Line platform, the tragedy of Satoru Gojo's sealing occurs. Yuji Itadori, who is the first to hear of this from Kokichi Muta, runs at full speed to a tall building, where he begins to scream Nanami's name at the top of his lungs, drawing the attention of everyone around him. As he screams, he reports that Gojo has been sealed. When word reaches Nanami, he changes his team's plans and decides to quickly meet up with Itadori as it could be the end for all of Japan. [21] Once they arrive at Yuji's location, Kokichi explains the situation and mentions what the best course of action to take is. Nanami agrees with Kokichi's plans and says that they will first need to raise the Screen around Shibuya to let the sorcerers through. Nanami says that she will meet up with Kiyotaka Ijichi while Megumi, Yuji, and Takuma deal with the Screen. Nanami tells Takuma that he is in charge of his companions and that they should explain the situation to Naobito Zenin and Atsuya Kusakabe if they are to meet up with them. Nanami then leaves to meet up with Ijichi.[22] After retreating, Nanami finds Ijichi lying on the ground badly injured.[23] After finding him in that state, Nanami becomes angry, as she remembers everything that has happened and feels weak after remembering Yu Haibara's death.
As Nanami tries to help Ijichi, he finds several murdered attendants on the ground, further infuriating him. [24] He then encounters Nobara Kugisaki fighting Haruta Shigemo, who was torturing Akari Nitta, as Nobara tried to defend her. Nanami begins to walk towards Haruta, who tries to scare him with Nitta but she had managed to escape. As Nanami approaches Haruta, he tries to attack Nanami but notices that none of his attacks work. Nanami asks him how many allies he has and where their locations are. Haruta nervously tells him that he doesn't know and Nanami sends him flying into a wall. Haruta tries to run away but as he gets up, Nanami grabs Haruta and asks again. Haruta says that he doesn't know, to which Nanami strikes him again, dealing great damage to Haruta. At that, Haruta tries to have his sword attack Nanami from behind, but Nobara saves Nanami just before the impact. Haruta becomes angry with Nobara, and Nanami grabs him by the neck and asks if he was the one who killed all the attendees. Haruta then tearfully apologizes, but Nanami sends him flying off a building.[25] After what happened, Nanami explains to Akari and Nobara the situation regarding Ijichi's physical condition and how Gojo has been sealed. Nanami then says that she was heading to help Gojo, to which Nobara says that she wants to join him, but Nanami immediately forbids her from participating since this match has become only for Grade 1 Mages and that she would only get in the way and could die. After this, Nanami asks them to stay there and wait for medical help, while he leaves to help Gojo. [26]
Along the way, Nanami manages to meet up with Maki Zenin and Naobito Zenin, and joins them as they enter Shibuya Station. Upon entering, the three magi encounter Dagon, Nanami mentions that she will take care of the spirit, but Naobito intervenes with his ritual technique. Nanami then watches as Naobito fights off the cursed spirit and as Dagon breaks free from his cursed chrysalis. [27] While Naobito distracts Dagon, Nanami and Maki team up and attack Dagon. The curse manages to fend off a large amount of water that sends Nanami and company away. When Naobito manages to figure out how Dagon defends himself, Nanami, Maki, and Naobito attack Dagon with speed-based attacks, forcing Dagon to activate his Territorial Expansion. [28] Dagon manages to trap Nanami along with Naobito and Maki in his Territorial Expansion. Nanami is instantly hit with the Domain's Sure-Strike Technique. Dagon attacks again and Nanami advises Maki on how to survive the attacks before being attacked by several fish. Dagon thinks he killed Nanami and tries to kill Maki, but Megumi Fushiguro appears after managing to enter through a small entrance. [29] Dagon tries to kill Megumi as he was trying to expand his Domain, but Nanami appears to defend him, though in the process he loses his right eye.
Nanami thanks Megumi for helping them and though worried for the young man, Nanami asks him to hold on a little longer while he protects him. Nanami finishes off several curses while protecting Megumi, but Megumi mentions that he can't take it anymore but that he will open a small exit for Naobito, Maki and him to escape, since on the surface the curse will not be able to win. Nanami immediately rejects that plan, as it would mean leaving the young man all alone in the Dagon Territory Expansion. Megumi assures Nanami that he will be fine and will not die. Nanami then gives the signal to retreat, with Maki and Naobito running to escape, but are surprised when Toji Fushiguro passes through the portal. After Toji appears, Nanami asks about the portal but Megumi says that it has completely closed. [30] Nanami watches as Toji faces Dagon. As she watches, she asks Megumi if she can last a little longer since they have to rely on Toji to defeat Dagon, to which Megumi replies that she can last a little longer. [31] As Toji exorcises Dagon, Nanami thinks that they only survived because Toji had arrived, but also wonders if Toji is on her side. Suddenly, Toji sends Megumi flying to another place. Nanami becomes worried, but at that moment Jogo appears, leading Nanami to become more worried, as Jogo is stronger than Dagon. Jogo then instantly burns Nanami, along with Maki and Naobito.[32] Nanami manages to get up but is severely injured and on the verge of death, but continues onward anyway. Nanami encounters a large number of modified humans.
While eliminating the modified humans, Nanami begins to become delirious thinking about how she could spend her time living in Malaysia, building a house by the beach and reading her books that she has not even been able to touch. Nanami feels very tired, but worries about Maki, Megumi, and Naobito and wonders what happened to them. Nanami, very tired, confronts the Modified Humans while he begins to hallucinate that he is in Malaysia. Even though they knock him down, Nanami continues fighting until he finishes off all the mutated humans. Finally, when he finishes everyone off, he realizes that Mahito is behind him. Mahito and Nanami have a little conversation. At that, Nanami begins to see Yu Haibara, his former classmate and best friend; Nanami begins to mention that he never knew why he became a sorcerer again, that in the end he just ran away but he came back because he saw it as a vocation. While Nanami begins to think about Haibara and his decisions, Itadori appears behind Nanami and Mahito. In the illusion, Haibara points at Itadori and Nanami becomes scared, since he does not want to curse the young man with his last words. Nanami just breathes, tells Itadori that I heard him and with a smile tells his young student: "I'll take care of the rest." After this, Mahito kills Nanami in front of Itadori[33]. Nanami's last words would accompany Itadori in the rest of the fight and help him move forward.
Skills
Kento Nanami was a first-grade shaman and former student of the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College. He is among the upper class of shamans at the Tokyo College. He is greatly respected by other chames due to his incredible abilities and way of thinking.
Physical Power
Force: He possessed superhuman physical strength, capable of destroying entire structures[1], knocking opponents away with a single blow[2] and exerting force on others without much effort[3]. Unlike others, he had a high level of control in the use of his strength and did not use it to its full potential unless necessary[1] or when he was overcome by anger[2]. His great abilities allowed him to be respected by other high-level sorcerers such as Takuma Ino, Kiyotaka Ijichi and even Satoru Gojo. Her incredible strength was enough to destroy part of Kawasaki City's sewer system[1]. Also, during the events in Shibuya, Nobara Kugisaki became impressed by Nanami's abilities, realizing that first-grade shamans are on a completely different level than her and other students. She also effortlessly managed to subdue a curse user who was allied with Suguru Geto[2]. She was able to put Dagon in a bind with her constant attacks[3]. Durability: He demonstrated that he had the ability to possess large reserves of cursed energy, being able to control it at will and with great efficiency through his cursed technique. His control over his energy was so precise that he was even able to protect his soul with it unconsciously.[1] According to Haruta Shigemo, hitting Nanami's body is the same as hitting a rock.[2] If injured in battle, his great handling of cursed energy allowed him to endure for extended periods in battle even being able to fight off the special class curse, Dagon, after losing his left eye[4] and survived Jogo's attack receiving multiple burns that extended from the left side of his head to his abdomen[5].
Speed and Reflexes: He had a high level of speed and great agility. Sometimes it was imperceptible to the human eye, causing his opponent to have complications trying to decipher his movements [2]. Accompanied by his great agility, he could have high mobility around the entire battlefield and move around it at will [1]. Since he had a high ability to sense the cursed energy of others he was able to quickly dodge various attacks [1] or protect team members from him [6].
Intelligence: He had shrewd fighting instincts and high deductive reasoning skills. Being one of the associates of the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College, he would often teach his knowledge to the students he was assigned with on missions, proving that he was well versed in the terms used in the world of jujutsu[7]. He tended to be the type of person who, while fighting, would carefully analyze the situation in order to find an opportunity that would give him an advantage. Furthermore, he could come up with unexpected plans and get others to adapt to it; he could even make his teammates adapt to his plans and make others fully trust in said plan[4]. Also, when his team was in a bind due to Dagon's attacks, Megumi Fushiguro made a last-minute plan and Nanami decided to adapt to it and make the rest trust him[4]. His teachings helped Yuji Itadori learn new terms and be able to apply them on the battlefield or in investigation[7]. The two times he fought Mahito, he was able to quickly deduce that he was outmatched in terms of raw cursed energy, however, he survived both fights and overwhelmed the curse on several occasions thanks to his quick thinking. When he was assigned the Kinema Cinema case, he realized that the remnants left in the cinema[7] were a trap, and used them to suitably engage Mahito in a match without endangering Yuji Itadori[8]. During that fight, he realized that his cursed technique could not win against the curse's, so he used his surroundings to immobilize it[1]. During their second fight, he realized that Itadori's attacks were still hurting him, and quickly devised a strategy to overwhelm him, which worked, and if it weren't for Mahito's sudden evolution, he would have been exorcised[6].
Cursed Power and Techniques
Cursed Technique: Nanami's cursed technique is known as the "Proportion Technique" (十劃呪法, Tookaku Juhō?). An innate technique that allows her to divide the opponent's length into ten lines and forcefully produce a weak point in a ratio of 7:3. She can freely choose which part to divide, including the head, torso, arms, or legs.[9] In addition, this technique is also effective on non-living beings. The derivative techniques she can use are: "Collapse" (瓦落瓦落, Garagara?) (lit. Rattle): Creates a large weak point in the surrounding environment, allowing Nanami to destroy the target in one hit.[1] Shaman Techniques: These are some of the techniques that any Jujutsu Shaman is capable of using: * Black Flash: This is an offensive technique that occurs when a sorcerer applies cursed energy in an extremely short time interval (0.000001 seconds) right after a physical blow. This causes a distortion of space and an exponential increase in the destructive power of the attack, up to 2.5 times more powerful. Visually, it manifests as a black flash that envelops the sorcerer's fist. "Binding Contract: Self-Imposed Contract - Reveal Your Cards" (, Binding Contract: Self-Imposed Contract - Reveal Your Cards?): is a contract created through the use of cursed energy used by many shamans. In this contract, the how of one's cursed technique works is revealed, and this increases the effectiveness of the technique. "Binding Contract: Self-Imposed Contract - Overtime" (, Binding Contract: Self-Imposed Contract - Overtime?): It is a contract created through the use of cursed energy. He gains a cursed energy limiter as long as he is working within his stipulated schedule; should he be forced to work overtime, the limiter is cancelled and he begins to gain a drastic increase in power.
Instruments and weapons
He demonstrated the use of tools that allowed him to use his cursed technique. He had a practical and quick skill, hitting his target with precision without unnecessary movements. His aim was always extremely precise, and he never failed to hit the weak point of his target. Some of the tools used throughout the series are: "Sheathed Sword" (Sheathed Sword?)[9]: is a type of short sword that has its edge covered inside a sheath. The sheath that covers its blade has a black dot design and its handle is made of wood. It is effective in hand-to-hand battles and she often used it in combination with his technique.
