Shinigamis

Training

To become a Shinigami, an essential requirement is to possess certain levels of spiritual power that cannot be developed in any way if one does not have a certain innate predisposition to them. The path that almost all Shinigami go through is through an apprenticeship at the Shinigami Academy, a six-course school in which students are taught to properly manage their spiritual energy, fight Hollows, the rudiments of Kidō and how to carry out a Soul Burial/Funeral (the process by which a Plus is sent to Soul Society). Although the exact date of its founding has not been specified, it is known that the creator of the Academy was Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryūsai, 2000 years before the events narrated in the series. However, not all Shinigami have to go through the Academy to be admitted to the Gotei 13 or any of the other military organizations of the Seireitei. Shinigami belonging to the high nobility are automatically admitted into a division, while characters with undeniable strength and skill in combat can also be admitted without having previously undergone the six-year apprenticeship at the Academy (as has in fact occurred with the current high-ranking officials of the 11th Division). Gotei 13

Gotei 13 The Academy is integrated, and one of the three main branches of the Soul Society military. It is divided into thirteen divisions, with their own leaders and specific functions, in some cases. The Gotei 13 obeys all laws made by the House of 46, the legislative and judicial body of Soul Society, and has no jurisdiction over the noble families of the Seireitei or the other two military bodies, the Special Forces and the Kidō bodies. The symbol of the Gotei 13 is a rhombus, in which the number corresponding to each of the divisions is inscribed on the back of the Captain's uniform and on the façade of his headquarters. Each Division has a specialty. As in any other army, in the Gotei 13 there is a hierarchy of power. In each of the divisions there are up to 20 positions occupied by different officers, with the rest of the Shinigami members being rank and file. The positions that exist within the Gotei 13, in descending order of functions and power, are as follows. General commander The Commander General (総隊長, sōtaichō) is the leader of the Gotei 13 and also the Captain of the 1st Division, which seems to imply that his position is that of a "first among equals". Even so, the General Commander is the only recipient of the orders of the Chamber of 46, and the one in charge of dispersing them to the rest of the divisions, in periodic meetings with the other Captains. The current holder of this title is Syunsui Kyōraku. The previous bearer of this title was Shigekuni Yamamoto Genryūsai who was also its founder until his death.

Capitan

The Captain (隊長, taichō?) is the head of one of the thirteen divisions of the Gotei 13. Each of these divisions appears to contain between 200 and 500 troops. The captains are the most respected Shinigami in all of Soul Society, as they are the only ones capable of completely releasing their Zanpakutō, the bankai. This makes them the most powerful Shinigami, since they can multiply their strength tenfold, making them, by an overwhelming margin, the most important attack forces of Soul Society. Furthermore, captains' bankai are usually very well developed and developed, at full potential (unless the captain is new to his position). Most of the captains also have plenty of experience in other combat disciplines, such as Kidō or Shunpo, and are highly knowledgeable about the history and organization of the Seireitei, as well as having a great sense of strategy. All of these factors create an abysmal power difference between the captains and the rest of the Shinigami under their charge. When a position becomes vacant, there are three different ways to become a Gotei 13 captain: Pass a skills test (隊首試験, taishushiken), which requires showing one's bankai in front of two or more captains and the General Commander himself. Lieutenant

The Lieutenant (副隊長, fukutaichō), sometimes translated as Sub-Captain or Vice-Captain, is the 2nd Officer of each division, below only the Captain. The duties of a Lieutenant are those of an executive officer of the division, responsible for supervising and sometimes directing day-to-day operations. They are generally only capable of developing the shikai of their Zanpakutō (although throughout the series we are shown some lieutenants who are capable of mastering bankai), but they are still the second in strength of the division. Currently, the Gotei 13 has thirteen lieutenants, five men and eight women. Official

Divisions

Each of the thirteen divisions is believed to be specialized in a certain area. However, only a few divisions have special functions, and we do not yet know for sure whether all divisions have a special purpose, or whether only some of them have a special purpose. The divisions that are known to date are: The 2nd Division (also known as the Penal Division) is closely linked to the Special Forces, and currently the first five officers are the leaders of the different subunits of this organization. Uniforms

Most Gotei 13 personnel wear the standard Shinigami uniform, called Shihakushō (死覇装, Clothes of Dead Souls), consisting of a white inner shitagi and black kosode and hakama.
