Backstory

Bruce Wayne was mentally traumatized by witnessing the murder of his father, physician Thomas Wayne, and mother Martha Wayne, who were shot and killed by robber Joe Chill. Young Bruce decides to eradicate crime in Gotham, later becoming the masked vigilante known as Batman. Comics historians also recognize Robin's introduction as significant, but with the arrival of Dennis O'Neil as writer and later series editor, Robin was relegated to the background in hopes of establishing continuity between series.

Story

Batman is the secret alter ego of billionaire Bruce Wayne, a successful industrialist, philanthropist and favorite of women. As a child, after witnessing the murder of his parents, Bruce vowed to dedicate his life to eradicating crime and fighting for justice. Having prepared himself physically and mentally, he puts on a stylized bat costume and takes to the streets of the city to confront criminals. With the assistance of other people, including his partner Robin, the butler Alfred, Commissioner Gordon and some superheroes, he confronts a group of villains, the most famous of which were and remain the Joker, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, the Penguin, the Scarecrow and Catwoman. Batman does not have superpowers, but uses his intelligence, martial arts skills, espionage, knowledge of science and technology, as well as an unbending will, the ability to instill fear and intimidate his enemies.

Education

Bruce Wayne vowed to free the city from the evil that took the lives of his parents. He spent his youth traveling the world, improving himself intellectually and physically, studying a variety of crime-fighting techniques, including chemistry, criminology, martial arts, gymnastics, and stealth. At the age of 16, Bruce Wayne began taking courses at Cambridge, the Sorbonne and other European universities, although he usually did not stay anywhere for long and dropped out after the first semester. Outside of the academies, Wayne learned more "practical" skills. During his travels, Wayne studied 127 martial disciplines from aikido and yau-yang to ninjutsu. The Frenchman Henri Ducard taught the basics of stalking people. The ninja Kirigi taught Wayne stealth and the rules of a shadow warrior, an African Bushman (an equal among the Phantom Tribes of the Ten-Eyed Brotherhood) taught him hunting techniques, and Nepalese monks revealed the art of healing. He even learned the peculiarities of ventriloquism. Wayne's knowledge of such diverse areas made him an unusual and unpredictable opponent. When he was 20, he tried to join the FBI, but soon realized that fighting crime through legal means was futile.
