nightmare was the guardian of negativity and guarded the tree of feelings (basically the mother) one side had negative apples the other had positive apples. the villagers began to bully nightmare even tho dream tried to protect nightmare, nightmare pushed dream away no matter how hard it was one day nightmare was getting really badly bullied so he grabbed an negative apple and ate it causing him to be corrupted and turn him into what he is now
