Marline

The series consists of a total of 40 episodes spread over three seasons and titled with the names of different philosophers. Created and written by Héctor Lozano and directed by Eduard Cortés, it premiered on TV3 on September 14, 2015. With a certain influence from films such as Dead Poets Society,[2] in Merlí, the creators of the series try to make philosophy closer to all audiences. Each episode includes the approaches of some great thinker or school, such as the Peripatetics, Nietzsche or Schopenhauer, which links to the events of the characters. The series was dubbed into Spanish by the Atresmedia group, which bought the rights in November 2015.[3] Internationally, Netflix bought the first season of the series in November 2016, to broadcast it in Latin America and the United States.[4] The first season of the series was broadcast in Spanish on La Sexta between April and June 2016. On January 18, 2021, the end of filming of the first season of a French adaptation of the series, titled La Faute à Rousseau, was announced. as well as the beginning of filming of an Italian adaptation titled Un professore.[5] In December 2019, a spin-off titled Merlí: sapere aude was released, starring the character of Pol Rubio (Carlos Cuevas) and available on Movistar+ and Netflix.[6] It had 16 episodes, spread over two seasons.

The plot of the series revolves around Merlí Bergeron (Francesc Orella), a Philosophy professor who, after being evicted from his apartment, goes to live with his mother, the actress Carmina Calduch (Ana María Barbany), and will have to learn to live with his son Bruno (David Solans), who until then was taken care of by his ex-wife. Coinciding with Bruno's arrival, Merlí is hired at the Àngel Guimerà Institute. There, with his unpredictable and unorthodox methods, Merlí will make him reflect, give his opinion and will also help his students with their problems, even if it is in a reprehensible way. He will not only explain Socrates, Schopenhauer, Hume or Nietzsche, but will also apply their ideas and teachings to solve the problems he encounters. His students, whom he calls "peripatetics", are a very diverse group who will have to face all kinds of situations: Pol (Carlos Cuevas), a repeater who will immediately get along with Merlí; Berta (Candela Antón), a rebellious girl who at first won't stand Merlí; Marc (Adrian Grösser), a friendly and nice boy; Iván (Pau Poch), a boy who suffers from agoraphobia and does not dare to leave the house; Tània (Elisabet Casanovas), an outgoing girl and Bruno's best friend; Gerard (Marcos Franz), a boy in love who will ask Merlí for love advice; Joan (Albert Baró), a studious and shy boy with a very strict family; Mònica (Júlia Creus), a new and very mature student; Oliver (Iñaki Mur), another new boy who will immediately become friends with everyone; and finally, Bruno, Merlí's son and his most difficult student. The latter will have a very well-kept secret that he will have to live with throughout the course.

The second year of Baccalaureate begins at the Àngel Guimerà Institute. The students receive Merlí with joy and he enters the center full of joy. The "peripatetics" have matured a little in general, but deep down they are still the same happy and insecure teenagers that we already met in the first season. A new student also arrives, Oksana (Laia Manzanares), who will generate new relationships within the group. In the staff room, however, Merlí is not so well received. Although Eugeni is waiting for him wanting to argue, a common adversary appears to the two, Coralina (Pepa López). This sixty-year-old professor, strict and authoritarian, is willing to impose her criteria and will revolutionize the faculty. Merlí is willing to confront her, so Toni must do everything possible to ensure peace. Coralina is not the only addition to the faculty: Millán, a Spanish Language teacher, and Elisenda, an English teacher, are also part of the new teaching team. At the institute, Merlí will take classes in an even more unorthodox way than in the first season, he will even do them outside the classroom. In class they will continue some of the plots with which the second season ended: Pol and Tània must define their relationship, Joan and Gerard have become very friends, Marc must decide if he accepts his father coming home and recovering family life, and Oksana's motherhood will also be delved into. There are changes in the staff room. Eugeni is the new director of the institute and new faces arrive. Gabi (Pau Vinyals) is the young new Literature teacher, but the one who interests Merlí the most is Silvana (Carlota Olcina), the new History teacher, who is very well received by the faculty. Merlí is excited about the arrival of this new teacher who is as creative as him, but little by little she will see that the students appreciate her a lot and she will begin to feel jealous of her. However, Merlí will continue teaching Philosophy classes with his particular style, winning over the "peripatetics" as he did from the first day of class. He will finish the season and course by explaining new thinkers such as Hannah Arendt, Kierkegaard, Albert Camus, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Karl Marx and St. Augustine.
