Alex is born Alakay, son of King Zuba, the leader of a pride of lions in an African reserve. When he is a cub, Alakay is kidnapped by poachers and taken away in a container. The container accidentally falls into the sea and Alakay floats to New York, Alakay is found and adopted by the Central Park Zoo, where he is given the name Alex. He grows up at the zoo and becomes the main attraction, known as "The King of New York."
