Kaine has been in Houston for a couple of weeks when he overhears a man talking about some kind of deal involving a lot of money on the docks. Kaine follows the man to the place where it is going to happen and defeats all the individuals present there. He then takes the bag of money and turns to leave. Before he can do so he smells a strange smell. Upon opening one of the nearby containers he finds a large number of corpses and realizes that the men he defeated had been involved in human trafficking. Searching inside the container he discovers that a girl is still alive and rushes to take her to the hospital, where she is mistaken for a bad guy so Kaine leaves to avoid hurting anyone. Kaine then arrives in downtown Houston, where he uses the money he stole to pay for a room and remembers his past. Deciding that he needs a fresh start he shaves off his beard and hair before going out swinging on his webs (without his costume). Back at the docks the police are investigating the crime scene when they are attacked by a man named Salamander. Meanwhile, Kaine who is still swinging around Houston saves an old woman from being hit by a car. Although she soon realizes that she has been accidentally hurt by the driver of the vehicle. The girl, whose name is revealed to be Aracely, is attacked in the hospital by Salamander and Kaine decides to leave town.

As a taxi is driving her away from Houston, an explosion erupts from the hospital where Aracely is being treated. At first Kaine debates whether she should get involved but the incident reminds her of how she got a second chance at life and that someone was trying to take that away from the young woman she saved. Kaine steals public transportation and rushes to the hospital to help. Wearing a scarlet suit similar to Spider-Man's, Kaine confronts Salamander and manages to defeat him. That night, he returns to the hospital to visit Aracely and asks her if she is okay. The girl answers him in Spanish but Kaine does not understand her. Just then, the doctor he had seen earlier enters with a police officer. Kaine tells them that he has no interest in such a thing and just wanted to make sure the girl was okay.
