Laurent grew up in Brussels, Belgium with his French mother Emma Thierry. He studied several different languages as a child as he aspired to become a diplomat. He had an ex-fiancee, Dorothy. who died in his last big scam, the one that left a mark on him forever. He wears a ring that belonged to his ex-fiancée, Dorothy, whom he dropped after dying before sinking into the sea. The ring is made of gold, with a beautiful blue gem embedded.

While visiting Asakusa in Japan Laurent runs into Makoto Edamura, a young man who Laurent had already decided would help with his plans with Sakura Magic. Makoto tries to trick Laurent whom Makoto thinks is just a foreigner with a lost wallet, but after gaining the fake wallet Laurent switches the fake wallet with Makoto's current wallet with a hug. Laurent meets with Makoto again due to Makoto fleeing from "police" and entering Laurent's taxi, the pair then went to LA Laurent tries to leave Makoto at the airport but Makoto follows him into his car because he wanted his 300,000 yen back so while in LA traffic the pair make a deal: If Makoto could sell it for more than Laurent then he'd get the money that Laurent took from him back along with gain Laurent as an underling, meanwhile if Laurent won he'd get Makoto as an assistant. The pair arrive at the mansion of Eddie Cassano to sell the man some "imports" from Japan. Laurent introduces Makoto as a pharmacological doctor from Japan. He then presents the “product” he's willing to license for sale: “Sakura Magic”, a designer drug in the form of a piece of candy. After Makoto is also given Sakura Magic he runs off in a mix of anger and fear, Laurent and Abby are able to catch up with him and knock him out, then tying him hanging upside down from the “Y” in the Hollywood sign. After cutting Makoto down from the Hollywood sign and going for some dinner, Laurent explains that Sakura Magic was fake and based off a rumor and that Laurent had set Makoto up to end up in LA with him for his plan, saying that it was because there were few good Japanese confidence men in LA After dinner, Laurent left Makoto & Abby together in a hotel room. The next morning Laurent finds out that Makoto had left, but it is certain that Makoto would be back by noon, but Makoto didn't. So the pair went to speak with Cassano, only to find that Makoto had already gone.
