An undead girl who remained in the world of the living and kept her mind thanks to the parasite Leviathan. Daughter of Roberto and Selena Contiello, the latter was a Skull Maiden

The backstory Squigley is the last "survivor" of the Contiello family, a famous dynasty of opera singers and longtime clients of the Medici family. Fourteen years ago, tragedy struck the Squigli family when the Medici Mafia was close to getting their hands on the Skull Heart. Lorenzo's main assassin, Black Dalia, was ordered by the mafia to kill Squigley and her parents, the very people who seemed to be their family's closest allies. It was during this incident that her mother wished to bring all the Contiello's back to life by becoming the Skull Maiden. Squigley would have been one of her minions had her father's Leviathan not contacted Squigley as his new master. Traveling to Medici Tower, she met Annie, Big Band, Panzerfaust, and D. Violet there. She reluctantly agreed to help fight her parents. After her success, she and Leviathan became "dead" again due to Skull Maiden disappearing. Big Band and Panzerfaust both agreed to keep the story of what Squigley had done secret. Lorenzo himself organized and attended Contiello's funeral, but it was during this time that he sewed Squigley's mouth shut in an attempt to cover up his role in her family's downfall. Squigley was not resurrected during Queen Renoir's transformation into a Maiden, as the Queen was far away in another country at the time, and her power did not extend to the dead and buried in the kingdom of Canopy[1]. The appearance of Bloody Marie awakened Squigley from his long sleep. As part of the Skull Maiden's immortal legion, Squigley was supposed to be nothing more than a mindless servant of the Pale Maiden. However, thanks to the power of her parasite Leviathan, she escaped that fate. Having passed through the Contiello family for generations, Leviathan is refined and loves Squigley as her father and previous master did. This long family history has made Squigley's bond with Leviathan deeper and more fundamental than most parasites, and allows them to work harmoniously both in and out of combat, like partners in a synchronized dance. Their unique circumstance also seems to have given them abilities beyond this world as well.

Character foundation Original Source Squigley is essentially a zombie, often referred to simply as a corpse, brought to life through the power of the Skull Maiden. Unlike most undead, however, becoming a host to Leviathan allowed her to retain her own thoughts and personality. Some of her moves in the game even reference Jiangshi, the Chinese "jumping" zombie/vampire. Name Her full name is Sienna Contiello. The name Sienna comes from the Italian city of Siena, as well as the natural pigment of the same name, which was used in cave paintings. Contiello is possibly a variant of the surname Conti, derived from the Italian word conte, meaning "count". She is better known by her nickname Squiggly, which is presumably derived from the word squiggle and refers to the Leviathan sticking out of her head that resembles a worm. Leviathan and her mother refer to Squiggly by her nickname, though the former also occasionally addresses her as "my lady". Throughout the game, most characters consider her one of the undead Skull Maidens and refer to her as such or derisively as "corpse". Big Band is one of the few to address her by her first name, Sienna, when they first meet, when Squiggly's mother was a Maiden. Early concepts show that her full name was previously Sienna Quinton Qishan Contiello; Quinton means either "born fifth" or "Queen's Settlement", while Qishan probably comes from the Qishan culture, a Neolithic culture based on the Yellow River in Northern China. This was apparently meant to reflect a long lineage of ties to Dragon Empire and the use of Squigley martial arts,[1] but both middle names and the reference have since been removed. Design Leviathan passes through Squigley's right ear and exits from a hole on the left side of her head. This suggests that this hole is a bullet hole made by a bullet caused by Black Dahlia while killing Squigley. However, this is contradicted by an in-game illustration depicting Black Dahlia shooting her head from the right side rather than the left; the hole on the left side is most likely an exit hole. She wears an ankle-length dress ending in ruffles and something resembling a skull top covering her breasts.
