John Connor was born on February 28, 1985 (as seen in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day"). Her father, Kyle Reese, had died months earlier, in May 1984, in his mission to protect John's mother from a T-800 sent to assassinate her (The Terminator). The first years of his life were dedicated to training him militarily; Most of his training focused on weaponry, computer technology, and espionage. In 1995, John's life changed in a matter of seconds, when a T-1000 traveled from the year 2029 to assassinate him. And a T-800 had also been sent back in time, this time programmed to protect him. John, now believing his mother's stories, uses the T-800 to make his mother escape from the mental institution where she is admitted.
