Jonathan Pine is an ex-soldier, who fought in Iraq and now lives in retreat from life, and himself, as a hotel night manager. A self-exiled creature of the night, and perpetual escapee from emotional entanglement, Pine’s conscience is pricked when his act of disclosing documents confidentially entrusted to him by a hotel guest results in her death. What begins as a quest for atonement becomes a quest for his own soul, as he enters the inner sanctum of Richard Roper and navigates the shadowy recesses of his world.

Jonathan Pine's efforts at being a criminal are handled mostly by the intelligence agencies trying to bring Roper down. They provide him with a criminal past and a variety of alias' to make Pine appear as though he's a career criminal ready to change lives at any given moment. They also provide him with one amazing wardrobe. James Bond may be suave, but small-town crime Jonathan Pine, or Jack Lindon as he's known in the town, is the most handsome spy you're likely to see onscreen all year. Pine's criminal personality is a far cry from the helpful night manager. So who is the real Jonathan Pine? Little is known about Pine's history as a solider but his training is apparent in the way he fights. Is Jonathan Pine a solider pretending to be a night manager, or is Jonathan Pine a night manager pretending to be a solider?

"Richard Roper is well born, well-educated, has grace and has charm. Roper is the owner and CEO of Ironlast Limited. But behind the public mask as a billionaire businessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist, gentleman – lurks a Mephistopheles. The "worst man in the world" has built an empire from his trade in human life, selling arms and providing private mercenary services to carry out inhuman acts, all to the highest bidder. His notable customers were the Egyptian Government and Columbian drug cartels (in the novel). Purchasing any souls get in his way. Pine saves his son. And his love for him is Roper’s only weakness. Roper welcomes Pine into his family. Which may just prove to be his undoing"

Summary : Richard Roper personality

On the surface, Roper appears to be a polite, charming man but underneath his façade lies a ruthless, amoral psychopath who in private and reality is also prone to violent mood swings, going from calm and patient to menacing and enraged in mereseconds while having no qualms about profiting from the deaths or misery other people experience as a result of his actions. He also possesses racist beliefs, calling Arabs "thieves" and during one moment, even voices his belief that the Arab militia are "little brown rats". Roper is merciless, having had his girlfriend, Jed tortured, the first time slapping her across the face while the second time had him ordering one of his men to waterboard her. He was also personally responsible for delivering the single punch that left Pine winded with Roper even being seen licking his lips as Pine was dragged off, implying Roper has a sadistic nature as well. Later, upon witnessing the trucks carrying his weapons blow up, Roper remarks, "Oh, you beauty", showing admiration at the fact Pine was able to outsmart him. However, Roper's anger emerges with a vengeance seconds later as he grabs a Glock 17 from the holster of one of his men and aims it at Pine with Roper eventually relenting, presumably unable to bring himself to pull the trigger. At the hotel, Roper during his meeting with Angela begins claiming he's done nothing wrong, revealing he's also a narcissist who cares more about himself than anyone else. His indifference soon turns into blind horror as the buyers who were at the viewing earlier arrive and after taking control of the police van proceed to drive off, Roper's anger and fear emerging as he realizes he's probably going to end up dead.
