John Munch
Since he was a child, Munch along with his brothers were physically abused by their father, who suffered from bipolar disorders and one night after receiving a beating from him after believing himself to be "very wise", John confessed to his father who hated his insides, these being the last words he said to him until he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. Also, while in high school, John constantly observed a little girl looking at him from the porch of his house with an expression that he could not recognize and he got used to seeing her every afternoon when he came home; until receiving the tragic news that she had been murdered by her mother, who had pushed her through a glass window. During his studies, John was bullied by his classmates who dubbed the man a geeky boy and liked a popular girl in his class - Helen Rosenthal - and so deep was his love for the girl that he defended her from her repulsive boyfriend even though his attempts of falling in love with her were in vain since she only considered him as a friend. One day, while watching television with his younger brother, John was informed of the death of Helen, who had been raped and murdered by those who used to molest him as children; and he also had to witness the corpse of the woman he once loved. In the 1960s, Munch went through a hippie free-love phase and was once photographed naked by his girlfriend one night.
John Munch
As an adult, Munch became a homicide detective in Baltimore. During his time, he met his first wife, Gwen, who was mentally unstable. Munch loved her, but she refused to take medication and didn't want to see a therapist, and eventually her mental illness became a bother and they divorced. Little is known about Munch's second and third marriages, but he eventually married one last time, to Billie Lou, a bartender at the Waterfront Bar, which Munch had with detectives Tim Bayliss and Meldrick Lewis. However, by late 1999, the couple had separated after Billie Lou (allegedly) slept with another Baltimore PD officer and were in the process of divorcing. At some point before his fourth marriage, he and his fellow officers met Lennie Briscoe and Reynaldo Curtis, who had come to investigate a murder that had happened in New York, but whose roots seemed to be traced back to Baltimore. Munch didn't like Briscoe at first because Briscoe had slept with Gwen. However, over time, they became good friends and would team up several more times. After retiring as a homicide detective in Baltimore in 1999, Munch moved to New York and was assigned to work in the Special Victims Unit in the City of Manhattan. He is 67 years old
