Kedamono

Affiliation

Popi's "assistant" and performer at the Wolf Circus. He is a deuteragonist, a constant victim of Popi's torment.

Appearance

Kedamono is an anthropomorphic purple-furred wolf who wears orange boxers with a yellow star pattern on top and an ever-changing Noh mask that matches his current expression (for example, whenever his current expression changes, the mask falls off to reveal another one that reflects this .) The first (and only) person to ever see his face under the mask was Frog, who states: "Kedamono's face... looks like his mother's face."

Kedamono seems to be the kindest and most caring of all the characters, showing his concern whenever someone was hurt or something was destroyed. However, if he is offered a chicken leg, he forgets about his morals and will do anything to get it. He also seems to have his own selfish streak - despite it being nowhere near rivaling Popi's - as he foolishly egged Popi on during a show of skill. Although his patience (especially with Popi) is great, he has moments of bitterness and reluctance to help Popi, possibly due to the mistreatment Popi tends to subject him to.

Kedamono wears a mask because he is afraid of revealing his true nature, which is a "beast" (this could literally mean that he disguises himself as a human with his mask and his true nature as a wolf). [Although even he doesn't know exactly what it is, and it scares him. This could explain his obsession with food, such as when the Alien destroys the fried chicken he used to force Kedamono to inject Popi. His mask becomes completely different, with a different color and a rather scary expression.

The reason Kedamono follows Popy is because Popy, as self-centered as he is, doesn't want to look beyond Kedamono's mask. He is not interested in what or who Kedamono really is, and feels that, ultimately, Kedamono is just Kedamono. Even when Kedamono's nature rears its head from time to time, Popi doesn't look very deeply into it, which brings relief to Kedamono and makes him feel safe to be around. Kedamono also stays with him because while he appreciates Popi's superficiality, he also recognizes that Popi is lonely and doesn't want him to feel that way.

By wearing a mask, Kedamono deliberately disguises himself as a human and hides the fact that he is a wolf. The point, of course, is that everyone knows it's the masked animal, although they may not be able to say exactly who it is. However, Popy doesn't treat Kedamono like an animal - instead, he treats him like a masked creature pretending to be human, which is what Kedamono is. At the same time, he will treat him like an animal or a person when the situation demands it.

To some extent, Kedamono seems to admire Popi's ability to unapologetically be himself. Wakako Masuda tweeted that Kedamono believes that by trying to be human, he could be more like Popi and complement him better. Make him stand out even more, which is what he wants. What he didn't take into account was that he was more experienced than Popy. He cannot be a man, but he cannot become a wolf again.
