Nikolai Gogol (ニコライ・ゴーゴリ,, Nikorai Gōgori?, Russian: Никола́й Го́голь) is a member of the Decay of the Angel. His ability is named The Overcoat. **Appearance.** Nikolai Gogol has white layered, sharp hair swept to the left side of his face. However, as short as it seems, he also has a long braid of hair that often rests on his right shoulder. A scar is slit vertically down his left eye. Compared to his left eye, his right eye appears vacant, bearing no highlights in it. Over his right eye appears to be a card-styled mask or eye patch. Gogol's attire is just as eccentric as his personality and closely resembles that of a circus ringmaster. Nikolai Gogol wears a mostly black jacket, the right side being solid black, black-and-white striped trousers, a shirt with a ruffled, round collar akin to a loose elaborate turtleneck, and dark gloves. Nikolai Gogol completes the outfit with a top hat with a diamond pattern. Nikolai Gogol once disguised himself as a police officer and Tonan's secretary. **Personality of Nikolai Gogol** Nikolai Gogol's sadistic nature. Nikolai Gogol is sadistic and loves to speak in great theatrics. One of his main traits is his tendency to pose questions (oftentimes rhetorical threats) as "quizzes". He is also skilled in disguises, deceiving Tonan as his secretary. Whilst fighting Atsushi Nakajima, Nikolai Gogol depicts great joy in fighting and tormenting him, going as far as to capture Atsushi's leg in his coat and leaving it in a separate space on the floor.

Nikolai Gogol hints that his eccentric persona may or may not be real. The side of him feeling no remorse in murdering others is just as real as the side that feels guilt, well aware of how wrong and cruel his actions are. He claims to want to soar as freely as birds do. Nonetheless, both sides appear evident. However, even if he does feel guilt, he acts as if he bears no hard feelings towards Fyodor Dostoevsky, whom he nicknames "Dostoy". Ability. Main article: The Overcoat Gogol's ability, The Overcoat (外がい套とう,, Gaitō?, Russian: Шинель, Shinel), allows him to use his coat to manipulate spaces and what comes out of them. That is, it acts largely like a portal, capable of relocating objects, as well as a 'pocket dimension' where he is able to store objects. He can use this to make his hand and gun appear in a space completely unrelated to him or drop a pillar through a portal before holding it there and opening the other end at a later point in time. The ability works on living things as well. He uses it to 'sever' Atsushi's leg from his body, trapping it on the floor. However, Atsushi is still able to move his leg and recieves pain signals from it. The Overcoat's range is upwards of 30 meters. Skills. Disguise: Nikolai Gogol is capable of disguising himself enough for other people not to notice it. This can be seen when Gogol disguised himself as a police officer in order to approach the car Mushitarō Oguri was in without raising alert or suspicion. He also disguised as Tonan's secretary for a half a year. Background He joined the Decay of the Angel to fulfill of what he always wanted - to feel freedom, and not being bound by gravity. Battles. (Nikolai Gogol to Mushitaro Oguri) "We are the Decay of the Angel—hiding here as terrorists, a 'murder association', five people who will announce the demise of the celestial world." (Nikolai Gogol to Atsushi Nakajima) "Did I trick you? You shouldn't listen to the words of a clown because you won't be able to sleep at night!" (Nikolai Gogol to Tonan) "I'm so envious of you. A bird born in a cage never realizes it's a prisoner. It doesn't even know it's not free. It just dies happily in the cage." (Nikolai Gogol to Atsushi Nakajima) "So... I actually have two responses. Here's the first, 'cos it's fuuuuun! It's fun, it fills me joy, and it gives me such thrill. I'm just like any other cold-blooded killer! I have no grand motive! I'm an enigma with no inner persona! Well.. that's the first reason I give my victims, sounds like it would make sense, no? Being killed by an inhuman monster is unfair but they at least die convinced. However, since you aren't on my list of targets, I will give you the real answer. I am a perfectly sane person. I known murdering is evil, and I feel guilty as anyone would. I'm sure you want to ask why I still kill despite that. Well, let's see do you like birds? 'Cos I do. The full freedom of flight, not being bound by gravity. It's what I always wanted." (Nikolai Gogol to Armed Detective Agency) "You agency people are living testaments to justice. Frankly, your sparkle mesmerizes me. The Decay of the Angel's plan is the true embodiment of evil. That's what makes it worth assisting in! It's time to break out of this prison! The inherent brain-washing we call morality! I seek freedom for my soul more than any kind of joy!! So listen to the screams of my own free will!". Etymology. The name Nikolai (Никола́й) (Мико́ла, Ukranian: Mykola) means "victory to the people". The name Gogol (Го́голь) (Го́голь, Ukranian: Hohol) means "wild duck".

Nikolai Gogol's eccentric nature likely stems from the real Nikolai Gogol's reputation as a dramatist and satirist. His brutal method of murder also most likely stems from the author's combination of realistic and grotesque elements. His ability comes from his short story "The Overcoat", about which the author Eugène-Melchior de Vogüé (often misattributed to Fyodor Dostoevsky) once said, "We all come out from Nikolai Gogol's 'Overcoat'."

Fyolai is the slash ship between Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Nikolai Gogol from the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom. Canon. Nikolai and Fyodor are co-members of the Decay of Angels, working together on numerous occasions. They have a strong friendship and allyship, due to Fyodor trusting Nikolai with his outrageous plan and Nikolai having a philosophical attachment to Fyodor’s life. Nikolai Gogol refers to Fyodor with the friendly nicknames **”Dos-kun** in the Japanese recording, **“Fedya”** in the Russian recording, and **“Dostoy”** in official translations; yet Fyodor Dostoevsky doesn't seem to be bothered at all. He also isn't annoyed by Nikolai's loud and cheerful persona, behaving almost like he’s used to it. Omake chapter (Vol. 14) Nikolai Gogol and Fyodor Dostoevsky talking to each other directly in the bonus chapter at the end of the 14th volume of the manga. The bonus chapter (consisting of just two pages) is about Nikolai Gogol wanting to play a game with Fyodor Dostoevsky while he is still learning the Japanese language. Fyodor Dostoevsky goes along to Nikolai Gogol’s desire even though he isn't very interested. He then fools Nikolai Gogol with a word catch and Nikolai Gogol loses the game. He appears some time later to play another similar game with Fyodor Dostoevsky.

The latter applauds Nikolai for his success, to which he is charmed and Fyodor Dostoevsky **“made him blush”.** Chapter 58. In chapter 58 of the manga (14th volume), when Nikolai Gogol explains to Atsushi the reasons behind his murderous actions, Atsushi says that he still doesn't understand his motives and his idea of "true freedom" at all. Nikolai Gogol answers by saying: "I suppose so. In the end, the only one who understands is Dos-kun". Chapter 78. In this chapter it is finally revealed that Nikolai Gogol is still alive and that he faked his death. According to Sigma's words, Nikolai Gogol was indeed supposed to die, without any kind of trickery, however Nikolai Gogol was able to save himself with the use of his supernatural ability. When the plan was arranged by Fyodor Dostoevsky, Nikolai Gogol agreed to die in order to prove his thesis of "true freedom" and "true free will"; but he changed his mind, probably when speaking to Atsushi or to the vice minister of justice, Tonan. It is unknown whether Fyodor predicted that Nikolai would change his mind. When Nikolai talks to Sigma, he says once again that Fyodor was the only person who was able to understand Nikolai's idea of "true freedom". He also says that he was deeply moved by Fyodor's words, and that he was his first and only friend who understood his essence—his **”intimate friend"**. Nikolai then says the reason he changed his mind about him dying according to plan. His concept of being "truly free" means being freed from his own feelings and, since he and Fyodor have a very close relationship, he thinks that by killing that intimate friend he would prove to be truly free from the humanity that weighs his soul down. The flashback that Nikolai shows, Fyodor expresses his praise for Nikolai and repeatedly calls him fantastic. This was changed from calling him splendid in the manga. Either way, confirming that Fyodor holds respect for his mutual friend, respect that is never given to anyone else.

Chapter 95.5 “Ohhhh my dear friend! I've missed you! My chest wrenched when I knew you're fine!” NIKOLAI GOGOL, AFTER BREAKING FYODOR DOSTOEVSKY OUT OF HIS CELL AND GIDDILY GRABBING HIS HAND. After Fyodor Dostoevsky questions Nikolai Gogol for breaking both him and Dazai Osamu out of their selective cells, Nikolai Gogol grabs his hand immediately and proclaims that he misses him, happily announcing how he’s glad to see him again. Fyodor Dostoevsky is startled for a short moment, though seems to have no issue with holding hands, before deadpanning comedically, leading to Nikolai Gogol menacingly adding he’s also here to kill Fyodor Dostoevsky. Nikolai Gogol refers to the both of them as “best friends forever.” Dazai laughs amusedly and tells Fyodor he has awesome friends, eliciting Fyodor’s smug agreement. Chapter 97. As Nikolai describes his “Gogol game”, he biasedly allows Fyodor to choose from a table of viable items—before Dazai—first to help him escape the prison, simply because Nikolai stresses yet again that he’s an intimate friend. Canon Nikolai and Fyodor are co-members of the Decay of Angels, working together on numerous occasions. They have a strong friendship and allyship, due to Fyodor trusting Nikolai with his outrageous plan and Nikolai having a philosophical attachment to Fyodor’s life. Chapter 98. After Sigma and Dazai Osamu leave, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Nikolai Gogol sit alone together for about five minutes before Fyodor Dostoevsky gets rescued by Chuuya Nakahara. Chapter 111. Nikolai Gogol is ecstatic that Fyodor Dostoevsky won his game and shows a dramatic display of praise. Though, the latter is peeved with the former’s involvement with attempted murder, and rejects his celebratory advances. Once Nikolai Gogol gives him the antidote, Fyodor Dostoevsky threatens to kill Nikolai Gogol with a stern yet amused attitude. In the manga, Nikolai Gogol looks solemn and defeated; in the animated adaptation, Nikolai Gogol rejoices. However, Nikolai Gogol gapes and stares in confusion when Fyodor Dostoevsky is stabbed in the stomach, asking what’s wrong before the situation spirals out of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s favor—in which Chuuya Nakahara is revealed to have never been a vampire, and Dazai alive. Nikolai Gogol watches in an uncharacteristically solemn manner as Fyodor Dostoevsky is sent to his doom. Chapter 112. Nikolai Gogol clutches Fyodor Dostoevsky’s arm Once Fyodor Dostoevsky dies in the aircraft, Dazai Osamu presents Nikolai Gogol with Fyodor Dostoevsky’s arm. He asks him why he looks sad if he had wanted to kill Fyodor Dostoevsky all along—Nikolai Gogol replies saying he never wanted him dead, saying that Fyodor Dostoevsky had changed him even if they had not spoken much. Nikolai Gogol holds Fyodor Dostoevsky’s arm close and caresses his face with it, presumably regretting this outcome, although unclear. Despite Nikolai Gogol exclaiming a multitude of times how he wants Fyodor Dostoevsky dead, he appears genuinely upset and nihilistic over the situation, doubting if he truly wanted Fyodor Dostoevsky’s death. This is represented by the removal of his face mask to help communicate the deeper feelings of turmoil. Dazai Osamu recognizes the deep feelings of sadness Nikolai was experiencing, choosing to back off and leave him in the moment of agony.

Fyolai is one of the most popular ships in the fandom, a mainstream pairing for both characters. Currently, it has over 2,500 works on AO3. However, it is rivaled by Fyozai and Siglai, as well as smaller ships like Fyosig or Fyoagatha. Fyolai is oftentimes shipped alongside similar mainstream ships like Soukoku and Ranpoe. Nikolai Gogol harbors romantic feelings towards Fyodor Dostoevsky, and that the reason he wants to kill Fyodor Dostoevsky is to break free of the twisted feeling of romance.

Appearance of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Fyodor Dostoevsky is tall, pale, and slim young man with long, dark, and messy hair that reaches his shoulders. Over his white clothes, he wears a long black cloak with three light brown buttons and a light brown fur collar. He also wears a fluffy white ushanka hat. Canon Sigma and Nikolai Gogol are both members of the Decay of Angels. Not much is known about their first meeting or their interactions prior to on-screen events, however, Nikolai Gogol has a genuine liking for Sigma to an extent where he mourns Sigma’s supposed death. Nikolai Gogol seems to trust Sigma enough to the point he unveils his left eye and explain his ideals and goals revolving freedom and his emotions towards Fyodor Dostoevsky. Nikolai Gogol is childish and dramatic around Sigma, teasing him at any given chance and enjoying his reactions greatly, stating he likes how normal and ordinary Sigma is. Sigma is hardly fazed by Nikolai Gogol but frequently shows his shock and frustration towards his antics. Nikolai Gogol is stated to like “surprised faces” on his official character profile, which may explain his liking towards Sigma. On the other hand, Sigma is wary around Nikolai Gogol, finding him odd and irritating; he states he hates dealing with Nikolai Gogol the most and appears unamused and annoyed by Nikolai Gogol’s theatrics. Sigma has a level of respect for Nikolai Gogol despite harboring some dislike towards him and finding him a nuisance. Sigma claims he has no doubt regarding Nikolai Gogol’s capabilities, and he instead questions his state of sanity and odd methods. Nikolai Gogol views Sigma as a valuable asset to his plans.
