Meruem is quite muscular, despite his relatively small body compared to his servants. He has two long appendages branching from his earlobes, and a large carapace armor on his head that resembles a helmet. There are dark pigmented areas on his arms, legs, chest and head. Meruem is the penultimate ant born to the queen and is the King of the Chimera Ants. He was born prematurely, by force through a tear through his abdomen. According to the sociology of the Chimera Ants, on the occasion of the birth of the King, the Royal Guard will only follow his orders, and the Guard and the King will leave the nest to find various creatures to mate and impregnate in order to create the next Ant. Hungry for power and food, Meruem leaves the hive and NGL with his royal guards in search of a place to begin his kingdom. He descends on the Eastern Gorteau Republic and takes over the country by killing his dictator, Ming Jol-ik, and having his Royal Guard Neferpitou manipulate his soldiers. Meruem then lets Neferpitou use Jol-ik's corpse as a puppet to place Eastern Gorteau under martial law. The entire population of the nation was ordered to gather simultaneously in the capital for a national meeting, in order to create a situation in which entire cities and towns could be secretly sequestered for a "selection": the forced awakening of Nen, to in order to create an army of super soldiers to conquer the world. The Hunter Association mobilizes an extermination team in response in order to attack the kingdom of Eastern Gorteau and assassinate Meruem, made up of the hunters Netero, Morel Mackernasey, Knov, Knuckle, Shoot McMahon, Palm Siberia, Killua and Gon, the Chimera Ants Ikalgo and Meleoron join them later
