In the beginning, before Cobra Kai, Miguel was naive, kind, and good-natured, he tried to help everyone even though he didn't even know how to defend himself or things like that, until he joined Cobra Kai, a karate dojo, where he taught there was no compassion for others and "playing dirty". After meeting Cobra Kai, Miguel's sporting and competitive spirit was always present, not to mention that he became more rude. Cobra kai

Cobra Kai is a karate dojo run by Jhonny Lawrence. Miguel was born in 2002 in Ecuador, son of Carmen Diaz and Hector Salazar. His father was a criminal with ties to a drug cartel. This dangerous lifestyle forced Carmen, who was pregnant with Miguel, to flee Ecuador and take refuge in the United States.

An asthmatic and naive 15-year-old teenager with no self-defense reflexes, Miguel is attacked by a group of rich bullies while shopping in a bodega. The group is led by Kyler, also a student at West Valley High School. Miguel is pushed into a nearby car, but the event is witnessed by the car's owner, who intervenes mainly for the safety of his car. Miguel tries to ask Johnny to train him in karate so he can defend himself against Kyler, but Johnny refuses because he has no interest in helping anyone. Miguel's determination in this effort comes up against Jhonny's decision to reopen the dojo he taught him, Cobra Kai.
