PERSONALITY

Personality Outwardly, Kanrai is a confident and flippant individual. He often seems to not care too much about his work, teasing the other characters in a singsong voice. He is callous and manipulative, pulling strings behind the scenes and being perfectly willing to sacrifice his children to further his own goals. He wants to spread ZENO by any means necessary, to create a world where no one has to resist their true feelings: a stronger world in which only those who can overcome their most base instincts can survive.

APPEARANCE

Appearance Kanrai is tall, with light blue hair and bright red eyes like the other members of his family. Despite being 50 years old, he only appears to be in his 20s. He wears a black suit, light gray shirt, and white tie. Kanrai wears shaded glasses on his face.

BACKGROUND

Background Kanrai grew up as the scion of the Ushirono family, which is implied to have a long history in politics. He first met Maeno Risshun in his childhood, and was immediately enamored by him when he was seemingly ignored at their first meeting. Risshun presented a mystery that Kanrai was unable to solve in a world that bored him to tears. His ZENO was active since his earliest days, and he has never lived without its influence, treating it instead like a spoiled child that can be controlled and reasoned with. Risshun and Kanrai grow up together after this point, becoming even closer, to the level of being considered best friends by Risshun. Though the timeline of events is unclear, eventually Risshun and Kanrai research ZENO together--Risshun for the purposes of discovering a cure, and Kanrai for his own reasons. Just before Fuyu's birth, Risshun created a medicine that could cure ZENO-- a drug that could suppress the functioning of the gene that caused it. Kanrai, despite Risshun's expectations that he would be thrilled to take the medicine to cure ZENO for his yet-unborn child, instead claiming that he no longer wished to cure the disease, but to spread it to as many people as possible. The two have an argument, and Risshun leaves, swearing to stop him. After this point, Kanrai continues to research ZENO, taking the drug that Risshun developed and decides to spread ZENO through having children with his family members, though not necessarily direct relatives. Sometime before the events of the ZENO Remake, Kanrai convinces Haruno Kochi to start a ZENO centered cult.

RELATIONSHIPS

Ushirono Ritsuka Ushirono Ritsuka is his wife, and is Kanrai's relative (presumably cousin, though not necessarily especially close). Ushirono Natsu Ushirono Natsu is his daughter, and successful ZENO experiment. Ushirono Fuyu Ushirono Fuyu is his son, who he holds an antagonistic relationship with. Kanrai doesn't seem to care much for Fuyu or Natsu beyond how they can be used for spreading ZENO. Maeno Risshun Maeno Risshun is the one mystery in Kanrai's life that he was unable to predict-- the man providing something fresh in an otherwise boring world. Risshun is the one person Kanrai truly cared about, and the one he couldn't understand whatsoever. They were best friends until they had a falling out over Kanrai's plans to spread ZENO. It is unknown how Kanrai reacted to Risshun's death. Maeno Shuurei Maeno Shuurei and Kanrai have a rivalry where they fight for Risshun's attention. Kareno Kanya Kareno Kanya is Kanrai's assistant, and believed them to be close friends, as they had known one another since childhood. This was onesided on Kanya's end, however, as Kanrai cared little for the man, eventually killing him during the events of Daily Life. Maeno Aki Kanrai was largely uninvolved in Aki's life growing up, instead leaving Kanya to look after Fuyu, Natsu, and Aki. They had a distant but antagonistic relationship with one another until the events of daily life, where Kanrai asks Aki to cure Haruno Kochi's Zeno. In the third ending for daily life, Aki becomes his assistant, replacing Kanya and helping Kanrai with his goals in exchange for keeping Fuyu, Kochi, and Tsugino safe from harm and experimentation. It is in this ending that Kanrai treats Aki as a replacement for Risshun, commenting on how similar their appearances are. He has a teasing dynamic with Aki, poking and prodding him emotionally to get a rise out of him, but is rebuffed at every turn. He doesn't care about Aki himself, but more for his value as a replacement for Risshun.
