History
The former king of the Nightmare Throne and an egomaniac to boot. Maxwell (who earned his name from his former stage persona "The Amazing Maxwell") was once the naïve and unimposing "William Carter", a penniless man from London who dreamt of being a world-renowned magician. When fate put William in possession of the Codex Umbra, he felt true power for the first time in his life. Casting off his old, meek ways and fully embracing his new persona as a charismatic master of dark magic, Maxwell achieved fame and success, but still found himself hungering for more. As he delved deeper and deeper into his magical tome, immersing himself in its secrets, the dark knowledge within addled his mind and clouded his heart. In his final performance, Maxwell lost control of the shadow magic he'd used so brazenly and both he and his stage assistant Charlie were pulled into the Constant. There he would remain for what seemed like an eternity, tethered to the Nightmare Throne and compelled to ensnare more victims in the Constant's trap. He is still baffled by the thought that someone he tricked into the Constant could find it in their heart to set him free... well, baffled and annoyed really. He never liked owing a favor.
After leaving the throne
Later, he meets Wilson in the same dimension of the constant. It was Wilson who freed Maxwell from the throne. Wilson is not very happy to see him, but in the end they conclude a truce and build a portal to the real world. However, it does not work as intended and helps the rest of the survivors get into their constant dimension. They are setting up a common camp.
Nature
He has a complicated character. He is rude and unfriendly. He has a strained relationship with everyone in the camp.
Facts
Title: The Puppet Master Birthday: October 22 Motto: "Freedom suits me." Curio Cabinet Bio: Formerly the Nightmare King, lately Maxwell finds himself reacquainted with life among the commonfolk. Perks & Quirks: Is dapper, but frail Can split his mind into pieces Draws power from shadowy equipment Was once the king of the world His real name William Carter. Maxwell's voice is a harmonium. Maxwell's examination quote for Tallbirds reveals that he created them by accident through a failed experiment. Maxwell has a brother named Jack Carter, as revealed in the William Carter Puzzles. Jack first appears in the DST short Wish You Were Here, where it's shown that he is nearly identical to his brother. Maxwell mentions his brother in a quote for the final state of Abigail's Flower post DST refresh: "...I wonder how my brother is doing." The short Wish You Were Here and an image included with the Wendy refresh confirmed that Abigail and Wendy are Jack's daughters and thus Maxwell's nieces Examination quotes were also used to imply Maxwell's relationship to Abigail and Wendy. When examining NPC Maxwell, Wendy says, "I feel a strange kinship with him." When Maxwell examines a held Abigail's Flower in DST he says "Hm? What a familiar presence." Maxwell's extended reign on the Nightmare Throne altered him in ways that are not yet fully understood. He continues to rely heavily on his tome, the Codex Umbra, as a result Once the King of the Nightmare Throne, Maxwell now finds himself surviving alongside the very people he once tormented. Needless to say, it makes for a bit of an... awkward atmosphere. Maxwell (née William Carter) was once nothing more than a humble stage magician, until the discovery of a mysterious tome changed the course of his life forever. Favorite food is Wobster Dinner.
Nature HD
He doesn't need to sleep. The throne has somewhat changed his physiology. He has sharp teeth, black arms up to the elbows and black claws. Jealous and doesn't like to share. Maxwell believes that he stopped being William Carter after finding the Umbra Codex. He thinks that he is no longer a man in general after the throne. However, he simply cannot understand that he just created a new identity, but did not cease to be the same William Carter. A human being. Because of this, his experiences and feelings are very difficult for him. He just can't believe in them. He cannot afford to show weakness in the form of the same love. Or else it is very difficult for him to understand it. He has a pretty cold body temperature even in summer. He's stubborn. Narcissistic. He hates being "in debt", so he tries to cope with everything on his own. I used to get sick often, but because of the throne and the changed physiology, I almost stopped getting sick at all. Wounds take a long time to heal. He likes coffee. Maxwell is very picky about food, and about everything else. Partly a perfectionist. He likes to take care of himself. When he worries about someone, he looks more annoyed than worried.

Since Maxwell had previously only observed the survivors in constant, he could not know how to do most of the things for survival. That's why Wilson taught Maxwell survival. They are used to being silent with each other because of awkwardness and speak only when necessary. The relationship between Wilson and Maxwell has been building for a very long time. And even though they still lack trust now, their relationship is definitely better than when Maxwell was just dethroned. (Although they still fight sometimes) Wilson and Maxwell's relationship got to the point where they hugged once after a hard day. They still hug sometimes after hard days, but the rest of the camp doesn't know that. They share one tent for two, unlike the rest of the camp members who have their own personal tents. This habit has been going on since the time when they were just the two of them in this dimension. Sleeping next to Wilson, Maxwell does not have nightmares. They guard the campfire at night together. Sometimes, when it is necessary to go for supplies, Wickerbottom sends this duo. Maxwell often criticizes Wilson's inventions. Even if the invention is useful, Max will criticize it, but he admits that it is useful. Maxwell doesn't like Wilson's beard because it pricks. Wilson has a scientific interest in how tron changed Maxwell's physiology. Since Wickerbottom had lived for years, she would have seen a spark in Maxwell and Wilson's relationship earlier than they did. Wilson likes to snuggle up to Maxwell in the summer because Max is cold. Maxwell is not very satisfied with this, because Wilson is hot, but he allows him to be accepted. Sometimes, when Maxwell tried to flirt with Wilson, Wilson did not understand the flirting and began to choke. It would be difficult for both of them to admit to themselves that they had fallen in love. When Maxwell makes a remark to Wilson, he usually sarcastically calls him "Higgsbury." Wilson is very fond of being clever, and Maxwell often does not under

During the illness, they take care of each other. Wilson is understandably professional, but Maxwell is as good as he can be. Maxwell, when it was just the two of them with Wilson, was responsible for cooking. Because Wilson doesn't cook well. Wilson and Maxwell would do some kind things for each other and tease each other for it. And the one who did the deed would say something like that it was only because otherwise there would be no benefit from the other. When he worries about Wilson, he looks more annoyed than worried.
