Characterization

Carl is portrayed as a young man hardened by the horrors of the apocalypse. He began to grow rapidly as the series progressed,[8] and was forced to make increasingly difficult decisions,[9] which eventually led him to adopt a cold personality in order to survive. During the first season, Carl was still a more or less normal child,[10] who listened to his mother and rarely caused trouble. Beginning in the second season, he became much more curious,[11] and began to want to be an eager part of the group,[12] and in the third season he became a prominent member of the team,[13] very skilled with weapons.[14] Because he grew too quickly - more than any child should,[15] - Carl began to have a fractured view of what was right and wrong,[16] and this behavior put him in conflict with his father, who wished to keep his morals and innocence as intact as possible.[17] Over time, however, Carl came to recognize and become concerned about his own humanity, and after regaining his sense of morality, he ended up with a very mature self-awareness.[18]
