Backstory1

("James and Mary met at a party at their mutual friend's house. Their love transformed from a burning passion into a peaceful, stable relationship. Before they got married, James listened to Mary play the piano. Mary loved playing the piano, and although she wasn't very good at it, James still loved listening to her play. Mary and James decided to vacation in Silent Hill after reading a brochure. They stayed at the Lakeview Hotel, where James recorded a videotape with Mary. In the footage, Mary says that she heard that Silent Hill was a "sacred place" and that she loves the town and would like to visit again someday. She asks James to promise her that he will take her to Silent Hill again someday, but the video ends before James responds. When the couple left town, James accidentally left the videotape at the hotel. Mary was stricken with a fatal disease and her condition worsened to the point where she began to experience severe mood swings, causing her to lash out at James. Her doctor estimated she had less than three years to live and told James there were no effective treatments for her condition. James questioned Mary's doctors about her illness and couldn't believe they would just let her die. He looked for information about Mary's illness in medical books, but found nothing useful. The further Mary's illness progressed, the less often James visited her because she was emotionally unstable. Due to the constant fluctuations in her mood, James was confused about what and how he should do the “right” thing. Mary and James' desire to have children also became unfulfilled.
