Info

Epel is a dainty boy with an ephemeral beauty. Quiet, he gives off a mysterious air and distances himself a bit from others in his orbit.

Appearance

Epel is a young-looking boy with fair skin and a height considerably shorter than his peers. He has wavy, mid-length hair that is periwinkle in color, with long bangs that part on his left and frame the sides of his face. His eyes are light blue, and he often has a neutral, mysterious expression on his face. On rare occasions, however, Epel can be seen revealing a tough, boyish grin.

Dorm Uniform

Epel’s dorm uniform is similar to the rest of the Pomefiore students. Epel also wears dark-purple winged eyeshadow while in uniform. The uniform consists of a violet robe, a black button-up shirt underneath, black pants, and black and gold heeled boots. Epel’s violet robe reaches his knees in length. The underlining is deep-red, with an intricate baroque pattern depicting several poisoned apples. Also underneath most parts of the robe is a layer of black sheer fabric. His robe folds at the front in a kimono-like fashion. The sleeves open up at the shoulders, and reach the knees in length. Both sleeves have a gold, baroque pattern near the ends. The left shoulder of the robe also has this patterning, and includes the symbol of Pomefiore. On the chest area of the robe are three golden straps, with a design similar to that of a marching band uniform. Around his waist is a wide, black sash, with a red rope over it, tied on his left side. The ends of the rope also reach the knees in length, and has large red and yellow tassels at the ends. The black button-up shirt worn underneath his robe has long sleeves and a white, wingtip collar. The ends of the sleeves have a lace-like pattern, and a single loop that goes around the middle finger. His black pants have a leather-like shine to them. The heeled boots are mostly black, but the laces, soles, and toe cap are colored gold. On the back of the boots is a gold baroque design.

Personality

Epel appears to be a soft-spoken, gentle person with a dainty charm. He's not talkative, has a mysterious impression and keeps his distance. However, contradictory to what people may think of him initially, Epel has a strong competetive spirit and short temper. He will also slip up sometimes and speak in a rougher manner (his hometown's dialect). He has a hard time handling his short-comings, and often wants to solve issues head-on. Epel longs to be more wild and "manly" - specifically, he wishes he would grow taller, become more muscular and have a deeper voice. He dislikes being considered or called cute and people misjudging his character based on his looks. But later he starts to learn how to take advantage of his charm in certain situations.

Background

Neither of Epel's parents are mages, but his grandma and great-grandma are both witches. His family deals with growing and selling apples. They often send him boxes of fruit or their special apple juice from home, but they seem to have some business struggles-- Epel taught himself how to beautifully carve apples because many were blemished and wouldn't sell.[3] He also mentioned wanting to make a potion that could strengthen weak apple trees, as this would make his grandpa happy.

Trivia

Epel comes from the Village of Harvest and often mentions that his family works on an apple farm. Epel wishes to become tall and muscular like Ashton Vargas. He wanted to be sorted into Savanaclaw. Ace mistook Epel for a girl when he first met him. Epel only grew up around elderly citizens, and the first time he had interactions with people of his age group was when he arrived at NRC.

Facts

While Epel attempts to speak softly and politely, to act shy and gentle for the sake of appearances (against his will, under order of Vil), he is in fact very passionate and will shift abruptly into a form of speech similar to Japan’s Tohoku dialect when provoked. This is often surprising to anyone nearby, and characters will comment that they cannot understand what he’s saying. Vil has forbidden him from speaking in the dialect of his home village, possibly to help contain some of the more unsavory and outdated forms of expression that he tends to use when he does so. It is a side to Epel that few besides Vil know, and that Vil is constantly fighting to correct. It is a daily struggle for both students that comes to a head in Book 5, when Epel outright refuses to follow Vil’s directions as they prepare for a dance competition, saying that he is done trying to be “cute” and he never wanted to be in Pomefiore in the first place. His rant includes that he doesn’t want to be a “feminine” man, but someone who is big and strong. Vil scolds him for believing that physical appearance has any bearing on physical/magical strength. When Epel announces that he is quitting the team, Vil instigates a magical fight which, according to Rook, is a very common occurrence at Pomefiore. Epel loses, signifying that he must concede to Vil’s orders, according to the agreement between the two. Epel runs off and Deuce takes him to a beach for them to share a cathartic scream of their frustrations at the ocean. While they’re gone, Vil promotes Epel’s family’s apple juice on his magicam account. There is an immediate spike in demand for the juice and Epel receives a phone call from his mother, informing him of what has happened. We learn from Epel that his entire village has been struggling due to low tourism (his family had sent him several crates of unsold stock earlier in the story), and he begins to understand what it is Vil actually means when he speaks of strength and beauty.

Facts

Back in his village, Epel lives with his mother, father, great-grandmother, uncle, aunt and cousin on the family farm. Epel’s family seems close from what we have heard, and Epel has said, "Whenever my grandparents fight, they bake their favorite apple pie together as a sign of reconciliation. I admire that kind of relationship.” While his parents are not magic users his great-grandmother and grandmother are both witches, and it is possible that Epel inherited his impressive flying abilities from them (as a child he would fly to the tops of trees to pick apples). Epel hopes help his village in the future by stabilizing apple production through the use of potions as the village’s population wanes. Epel enjoys the Spelldrive club because of the excitement of playing against people who are so much larger than himself. He used to return from practices with scrapes and bruises on his face, for which Vil would scold him for not taking better care of himself. To avoid Vil’s lectures, Epel started to focus upon outmaneuvering his opponents rather than challenging them head-on, earning him a compliment from the Spelldrive club leader, Leona. There is a good chance that Vil’s reprimands were, in fact, indirect advice to help Epel excel at the sport he loves. Epel’s appearance has led his fellow dorm-mates to assume that he is of noble birth when he is, in fact, from a family of apple farmers. As there are very few who know this he is often bullied for being something he’s not, as others at NRC judge him by his appearance and assume that he is rich, spoiled and haughty. He never claims to be royalty, but as it is generally assumed of him, social faux pas such as drinking the water from a finger bowl and slurping soup come across as particularly baffling to his fellow Pomefiore students.

Facts

he challenged Vil to a fight before the opening ceremony on his first day at Night Raven College after Vil after taking insult at Vil’s comments, but he was soundly beaten in a bare-handed fight that involved no magic. Vil says that he hopes Epel is not sorted into his dorm by the mirror and Epel agrees, wanting to be sorted into Savanaclaw. No matter the severity of Vil’s tutelage, however, Epel does not break, and Vil in turn allows him the freedom to join the Spell Drive club. This perseverance in the face of adversity is characteristic of Epel, who earned the nickname “The Poison Apple of the Felmier family” in his hometown in response to how his determination to win fights in which he is out-sized and out-numbered is at such odds with his delicate appearance. The children who would bully him were at his school but not from his village, as Epel says that there was no one there who was anywhere close to his own age. This is not an unusual situation in smaller villages in Japan. People in his home village would often give him rides on their blastcycles, inspiring his passion for the vehicles from a young age. In his dorm uniform vignette Vil orders him to design a blast cycle for use by the Film Club and is even permitted to drive it to the film set on campus from Ignihyde Dorm as a reward for his tireless effort. When he tries to leave, however, Vil refuses to allow it, announcing that Epel is the new lead character in their upcoming film, despite his protests. Among Vil’s various restrictions and rules for Epel, Vil also forces him to wear the lacey shirt he wears under his school uniform, to read at least one book per week and to use respective honorifics with absolutely everyone with whom he speaks. Epel appears withdrawn and gentle because of Vil’s various restrictions on his speech and actions, as he has difficulty upholding the facade.

Facts

Epel says that most people assume that all Pomefiore dorm students are obsessed with their looks, but that’s actually not true—Vil is a special case. Epel is very adept at apple-carving, explaining that the motif he has practiced the most is rabbits. According to the official fan book, this is a reference to the rabbit-carvings of the beds of the seven dwarves in Disney’s Snow White. It is a talent he learned in order to make unappealing apples that his family could not sell into something aesthetically pleasing enough to earn money.

Night Raven College

Epel attends Night Raven College, NRC for short. an all-boys academy and the main setting of Twisted Wonderland. It is a four-year magic educational institution located on top of a mountain on the north side of the Isle of Sages. According to a legend in Twisted Wonderland, there once lived grand beings in this world collectively called The Great Seven. Each of the seven dormitories at Night Raven College are modeled after one of these Great Seven, and upon entering the school, students are sorted into these dorms.

Night Raven College Dormitories

Heartslabyul, based on the Queen of Hearts' spirit of strictness. Savanaclaw, based on the King of Beasts' spirit of persistence. Octavinelle, based on the Sea Witch's spirit of benevolence. Scarabia, based on the Sorcerer of the Sands' spirit of mindfulness. Pomefiore, based on the Fairest Queen's spirit of tenacity. Ignihyde, based on the King of the Underworld's spirit of diligence. Diasomnia, based on the Thorn Fairy's spirit of nobility.

Pomefiore

Pomefiore is the oldest of the dorms and houses students who excel at potionology and curses, as well as cultivating a unique sense of style. It is quite a fancy dorm. Many Pomefiore students appear to come from well-off families. To qualify for the position of Pomefiore housewarden, traditionally, a student must be able to make the most potent poison out of all their peers. Vil Schoenheit is the housewarden. Rook Hunt is the vice housewarden.
