Due to his love of training, he is most commonly seen wearing a Gi. Originally, Goku wore an open blue gi secured by a white obi tied over his waist, red wristbands, and dark blue kung fu shoes and also a tank top. After training under Master Roshi, Goku wore the basic Turtle school uniform, consisting of a closed red (later orange) gi secured by a black obi tied over his waist, blue wristbands, and blue kung fu shoes, with Roshi's kanji on the back and front left side of his shirt. After training under Kami and Mr. Popo, Goku wore a short-sleeved black (later dark blue) t-shirt with this gi, and replaced his shoes with dark blue boots with a yellow trim and red laces. After training under King Kai, Goku wore King Kai's kanji on the back of his gi shirt. During the Battle on Planet Namek, Goku wore his own kanji on both sides of his gi shirt. During the conflict with the Android and the conflict with Majin Buu, Goku wore a plainer version of this gi that lacked kanji and featured a blue sash-style obi over his waist, as well as the same dark blue undershirt, wrist guards, and boots from his previous gi, but with a red trim and yellow/tan laces. He later retains this outfit for most of Dragon Ball Super, while also regaining his own kanji on both sides of his gi shirt. Goku was rather short and looked even younger than he was, being considered to be under the age of 10 (people were shocked to learn his actual age). His somewhat naive personality also gave people the impression that he was as young as he looked. Over the next few years, Goku did not go through any physical changes aside from his muscles becoming more pronounced. By the age of 15, he began to show noticeable increases in height.

At age 18, he had a considerable growth spurt, growing taller than some of his friends and developing a well-built physique. He is also considered to be very handsome, as noted by several women, including Bulma and Heles. His physical changes made him nearly indistinguishable from before and he was only recognized by his naive personality and "trademark" hairstyle. At age 25, Goku had another growth spurt and became similar in height to his taller human allies and much more muscular.

He is very loyal to his friends and family, and is extremely protective of them as a result. He loves them so much that he is willing to sacrifice himself to save others like he did against Raditz and Cell. He strongly believes in repaying one's debts, as he gave the then-evil Vegeta a Senzu Bean for technically saving Gohan and Krillin from the Ginyu Force. He is a man of his word, committed to keeping his promise no matter what; two prime examples being the resurrection of Bora and giving the Omni-King a friend even more fun than himself. He has a very practical and carefree outlook on life, and his goals are very straightforward; he only seeks new adventures and challenges like testing his limits as a warrior. He has no interest in luxury or high-ranking positions, as he turned down Kami's offer to become Guardian of Earth, and likewise Whis' offer to become Universe 7's next God of Destruction, though the latter was mostly due to his morality making him unsuitable for it. At the same time, he displays an unwavering will and tenacity to succeed, always determined to never give up in the face of any adversity.

Originally as a Saiyan infant, Goku was very shy, constantly crying for attention. Goku was then programmed with intense hostility in order to carry out his mission to eradicate all sentient life on Earth. When he was found by Grandpa Gohan, he was unruly, wild, and aggressive, wanting nothing to do with the elder Goku. However, after the head injury that caused him to lose his instinctive aggressiveness, Goku became known for the energetic, kind-hearted, pure, and caring personality traits he inherited from his mother Gine. Grandpa Gohan taught him to be compassionate and respectful towards others. He takes most situations in stride; he rarely lets things get on his nerves; he quickly got over the loss of his tail each time. However, he is not without his fear. Goku is shown to be submissive to dominant women such as Bulma and Chi-Chi , even to the point where Master Roshi jokingly states that for all his immense power, he is terrified of his wife. In the anime, he also has aichmophobia, a crippling fear of needles. He is not without grief, most notably seen by the loss of his grandfather. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, he is not without shame, as he laments his lack of maturity as a person despite all the teachers who have helped him and similarly wants his loved ones to be proud of him. He also shows genuine concern for the well-being of his loved ones. When Master Roshi was seemingly killed against Ganos , Goku frantically ran to his aid, desperate to save his mentor and shed tears of joy when he managed to revive him. Goku is pure of heart and has no negative feelings or thoughts.

His straightforward and carefree approach, combined with the fact that he often takes things at face value, can make Goku quite blunt when expressing himself. Despite this, Goku is remarkably effective at pushing himself once properly motivated, able to quickly grasp the situation and also learn the basics of anything thrown at him, if not master it. Having first-hand experience, Goku is shown to be incredibly perceptive and intuitive, able to quickly analyze the situation and formulate an effective countermeasure. Highly methodical and tactical in his approach, he immediately saw beyond the limits of the higher grades of Super Saiyan even without having tested them in battle and opted to refine his normal Super Saiyan form, impressing even his rival Vegeta with the cunning and innovative idea. He has shown such innocence since childhood, mainly because he spent most of his childhood in seclusion on Mount Paozu, aside from the early years of his life being with his grandfather and spending his teenage years traveling the world to hone his combat skills. This lack of social experience and proper education while growing up (aside from basic education from Master Roshi) left him rather ignorant in many things outside of battle and had little development in emotional maturity. During his childhood, he originally had difficulty differentiating between a man and a woman without physically touching them, which often got him into trouble. [37] His lack of emotional maturity has also made him somewhat naive, which often leads many to incorrectly assume that he is somewhat stupid.
