Persona Attributes

Harley Quinn

She has no superpowers per se, just don’t get anywhere near that baseball bat she often carries around. As Dr. Harleen Quinzell, an intern working at Arkham Asylum, she was assigned to psychoanalyze The Joker. She eventually fell in love with him, and he used lies and manipulation to turn her into his villainous accomplice. Over the years this has led to some criticism of the way abuse is portrayed in comics. Stepping into the role of Harley Quinn for the third time, Margot Robbie stars as the former Arkham Asylum psychiatrist Dr. Harleen Quinzel. The first Suicide Squad movie featured her first interactions with the Joker while he was her patient. After he threw her into a vat of chemicals at the Ace Chemicals plant, she kept an on-and-off relationship with the Clown Prince of Crime until she finally broke up with him. After reclaiming her autonomy in Birds of Prey, Harley Quinn is now even more determined and dangerous than ever before. Although she has no superpowers, despite clips from the movie showcasing some sort of flower power, Harley Quinn’s combat skills and unpredictable character remain one of the Squad’s most powerful assets.Once a respected therapist, Harleen Quinzel’s life changed forever when Batman returned the Joker to Arkham Asylum one night. While Dr. Quinnzel (Margot Robbie) thought she was helping the Joker, the clown prince of crime was slowing turning the good doctor mad, according to the 1994 graphic novel The Batman Adventures: Mad Love. Following in his footsteps, Harley jumped freely into a vat of acid to become Harley Quinn, the girlfriend of the Harlequin of Hate.

Amanda Waller

Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) Suicide Squad Roll Call Amanda Waller Viola Davis reprises her role as Amanda Waller in The Suicide Squad. Waller, the commanding officer of Task Force X, is a powerful political figure involved in several espionage and law enforcement agencies. Throughout her comic book, animation, and live-action appearances, she has advocated for and created the Suicide Squad based on her belief that powered individuals presented a threat to humans. Without any superpower or special ability herself, Amanda Waller’s greatest weapon is her influence and unwavering determination, which have helped her face the most dangerous individuals on the planet and manipulate them to work for her. It’s safe to say that without Amanda Waller, any Suicide Squad lineup would do justice to their name before their mission even started. Amanda Waller Step out of line, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) will make sure the punishment fits the crime. Waller heads the Task Force X program. She assigns the Suicide Squad their deadly missions and always expects the mission be a success. In the comics, she has been called Amanda “The Wall” Waller in recognition of her toughness. AMANDA WALLER Amanda Waller in The Suicide Squad | Viola Davis as Amanda Waller Think of Amanda Waller as a sort of amoral Nick Fury. She’s a high-ranking government official who created and oversees the third iteration of Task Force X. Her directive is simple: carry out the mission, or die trying. Refuse any order, and she’ll detonate a charge placed at the base of your skull. Her unorthodox tactics and ruthless devotion to winning at all costs have garnered her a lot of success. But she also made a lot of enemies, both with her superiors in Washington and among the members of the Suicide Squad itself. She has no powers to speak of, unless you count intimidation, manipulation, and looking killer in a pearl necklace as powers.

Bloodsport

Bloodsport (Idris Elba) Suicide Squad Roll Call Idris Elba Bloodsport Though Elba was originally meant to replace Will Smith as Deadshot due to the latter’s scheduling conflicts, director Gunn instead chose to have him play Robert DuBois, a.k.a. Bloodsport. At the time of The Suicide Squad, he is serving time in prison for “putting Superman in the ICU with a Kryptonite bullet.” The character has had his fair share of incarnations since being created back in 1987, but his origin story saw him driven mad after finding out his brother Micky took his place in the draft for the Vietnam war. Lex Luthor then manipulated DuBois into blaming Superman, before supplying him with a teleporter and weapons. In the 2021 movie, Bloodsport's motivation is to help his daughter Tyla, played by Storm Reid, whose court case is used by Amanda Waller as leverage to convince him to join the team. Trailers have also shown Bloodsport having a close connection with Ratcatcher 2, which is yet to be explored. BLOODSPORT Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com Idris Elba as Bloodsport The man behind the “shot heard ’round the Twittersphere,” Idris Elba’s Bloodsport sent DC fans into a tizzy when the latest trailer announced he was serving time for putting Superman in the ICU with a Kryptonite bullet. A number of characters have held this moniker over the years, but Elba is Robert DuBois, a mercenary (in the comics he was a draft dodger) employed by Lex Luthor to assassinate Supes. Luthor’s cronies supplied DuBois with an arsenal of high-tech weaponry, which in the film includes a suit that only he can use. It looks like Bloodsport is also a father, so he’ll likely have a major role to play, including becoming one of the Task Force’s leaders

Peacemaker

Peacemaker (John Cena) Suicide Squad Roll Call John Cena Peacemaker Vertical John Cena stars as Christopher Smith, a.k.a. Peacemaker, a character that Cena himself has described as a “douchey Captain America.” Peacemaker is a pacifist diplomat so committed to achieving peace that he is willing to become a vigilante to achieve his goals, going after warlords and dictators. In the comics, he finds out that his efforts are the result of mental illness, caused by the shame and guilt of knowing his father was a Nazi death camp commandant. After The Suicide Squad, John Cena’s Peacemaker will star in his own series from James Gunn, which promises lots of misguided violence, plenty of James Gunn’s brand of humor, and narrative connections to the larger PEACEMAKER Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com John Cena as Peacemaker Peacemaker, AKA Christopher Smith, is the perfect recruit for something like the Suicide Squad. He’s a pacifist, but he’s so committed to peace that he’s not above using violence to get it. As he turns to more and more extreme (read: violent) tactics, Smith eventually comes to believe that the ghosts of his victims live inside his helmet and whisper advice, something I sincerely hope that John Cena’s version of the character will also believe. This will be Peacemaker’s first film debut, but soon after, he will have a spin-off series of his very own at HBO Max.

Rick Flag

Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) Rick Flag ready for the new movie Joel Kinnaman returns as Colonel Rick Flag, leader of the original Suicide Squad. In the first Suicide Squad movie, he is a Special Forces officer and West Point graduate hired by Amanda Waller to monitor June Moone/Enchantress (Cara Delevingne). During the events of the 2016 flick, Flag fell in love with Moone and eventually freed her from the clutches of the ancient goddess Enchantress who was trying to unleash a potentially cataclysmic threat on humanity. Flag also enlisted Katana as his personal bodyguard, but even though Katana’s character was wasted in Suicide Squad, the Colonel will not be bringing her on the mission in The Suicide Squad. Rick Flag There are three things Rick Flag loves: mom, apple pie and baseball. He is the field commander of the Suicide Squad and never lets them forget it. In his comic incarnation, Flagg (Joel Kinnaman) served in a beta version of Task Force X with three other teammates, two scientist who sacrifice their lives for Flagg and his girlfriend. RICK FLAG Rick Flag in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag Rick Flag is actually the name of three different DC characters — a father, son, and grandson. The eldest Flag led the first iteration of the Suicide Squad during WWII. In both Suicide Squad films, Joel Kinnaman portrays Rick Flag Jr., a special forces operative who is more or less forced by Waller to lead the team on their missions. In the comics, Flag sees himself as a “good guy” and despises the criminals he works with. But his loyalty to the missions and his fellow teammates eventually gets the better of him. The problem is, he’s a bit mentally unstable, and so as a loose cannon he fits in better with the Squad than he’d like to think. Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) The all-business leader of the Suicide Squad executes Amanda Waller’s orders—though he may not always agree with her goals or methods.

Boomerang

Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) Suicide Squad Roll Call Jai Courtney Captain Boomerang Another member of the original Suicide Squad, Jai Courtney stars as George “Digger” Harkness, a notorious Australian criminal going by the name of Captain Boomerang. The Suicide Squad movie showed that he was captured by Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen a.k.a. The Flash after pulling off a string of jewelry heists. After being sentenced to serve three life sentences, Harkness was forced to join Task Force X. With The Suicide Squad taking a new direction, Harkness’s connection to the former Task Force X lineup and The Scarlet Speedster will be retconned, but his personality and weapons of choice will remain the same. However, with Andy Muschietti’s The Flash keeping parts of the DCEU canon, Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang can still cross paths with Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen in the future. Captain Boomerang He comes from the land down under. Australian George “Digger” Harkness (Jai Courtney) came to America to seek fortune by any means necessary. Going by the name Captain Boomerang, Harkness uses boomerangs to commit crimes and battle superhero nemesis The Flash. CAPTAIN BOOMERANG Captain Boomerang in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang George Harkness, AKA Captain Boomerang, has been a major player in the Suicide Squad since being introduced as a villain for The Flash in 1960. As a child growing up in the Australian town of Korumburra, Harkness taught himself the skill of boomerang making and throwing, since back then that was apparently all Americans thought Australians did. He tried performing as a boomerang artist for a toy company, but when audiences only laughed at him, he naturally turned to a life of crime instead. On the Suicide Squad, Harkness has a bad reputation, which should tell you something about his character. He constantly harasses and antagonizes his teammates. Waller herself refers to him as a “jerk and a screw-up,”

The Thinker

THE THINKER The Thinker in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com Peter Capaldi as The Thinker Speaking of sonic screwdrivers, Doctor Who fans are rightly hyped for Peter Capaldi, the Twelfth Doctor, to join the DC Extended Universe as The Thinker. There are several iterations of The Thinker in comics history, but Capaldi is most likely Clifford DeVoe, the first person to ever bear the name. DeVoe was a failed district attorney in Keystone City who, after letting a notorious crime boss go free, offered his services to the boss’ criminal empire. DeVoe discovered a “Thinking Cap” that enhanced his already considerable intellect and gave him telekineses and mind control powers. In his first outing with Task Force X, he was thought to have been eaten by Weasel, but that turned out later to not be true. Still, my money is on Weasel and The Thinker having some…interesting interactions in the new film. The Thinker (Peter Capaldi) Suicide Squad Roll Call Peter Capaldi The Thinker Peter Capaldi is confirmed to star as The Thinker, one of DC Comics’ oldest villains, whose name was used by four different supervillains over the years. His abilities include technologically derived powers of telekinesis and mind control through his “Thinking Cap” — a metal helmet that projects his mental force. The Thinker is meant to be quite a young man, but his brain drains energy from the rest of his body and causes him to age prematurely. The character recently appeared as the main antagonist of The Flash season 4, portrayed by Neil Sandilands. In this soft reboot, The Thinker could play a key role in combatting the mind control of Starro the Conqueror, who is confirmed to be the film’s antagonist.

Sol Soria

SOL SORIA Sol Soria in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com Alice Braga as Sol Soria There’s one more member of the team mentioned in the announcement trailer: Sol Soria, played by Alice Braga. She’s also not a comics character, but there is speculation that she could be a gender-swapped version of Juan Soria, who wanted to be a superhero so badly he gave himself a cybernetic hand that could unlock any lock. He tried out for the Justice League but was rejected, and so turned to crime, later joining the Suicide Squad. But I’m not convinced, since Braga’s character seems wildly different from this one. The DCEU Wiki says Braga is a native of Corto Maltese and the leader of a resistance force there. She teams up with Task Force X, but isn’t necessarily a true member. Is there any relation to Juan Soria? We shall find out very soon! Sol Soria (Alice Braga) Suicide Squad Roll Call Alice Braga Sol Soria Alice Braga plays Sol Soria, who is likely to be a gender-swapped version of the comic’s Juan Soria, a character who gave himself the ability to unlock any object he touched by injecting nanites into his hand. Despite having a childhood dream to join the Justice League, Juan was denied and his hopes were crushed. Distraught and broke, he went on to rob a bank, only to then find himself stopped by the Justice League. Due to his ability to unlock any lock, he was placed in a hole in Belle Reve before being recruited into the Suicide Squad. Soria’s skillset is reminiscent of Suicide Squad’s Slipknot — a criminal who could climb anything with his expertly crafted knots. Slipknot infamously died early in the 2016 film, so Soria’s fate doesn’t look so hopeful.

Blackguard

BLACKGUARD Blackguard in The Suicide Squad | Pete Davidson as Blackguard Dick Hertz was a thug recruited by the criminal group known as The 1,000. They outfitted him with a high-tech suit and some gadgets, and he became the criminal Blackguard. When attempting to steal some satellite technology from S.T.A.R. Labs, he was stopped by Booster Gold. Later, after becoming reformed in prison, Waller grew interested in Blackguard as a member of the Suicide Squad. On his first mission, though, part of his team turned against him, and he was beheaded. I guess there really is no honor among thieves. Could this mean we’ll see the Suicide Squad turning on each other? Time will tell. Pete Davidson plays Blackguard in the film. Blackguard (Pete Davidson) Suicide Squad Roll Call Pete Davidson Blackguard SNL cast member and comedian Pete Davidson appears as Richard Hertz, a.k.a. Blackguard. Initially a small-time thug, he was recruited by the criminal organization The 1000, to carry out a number of jobs and operations for their nefarious purposes. He usually wears heavy armor gifted to him by The 1000, which allows him to generate a shield and mace made of pure energy. In The Suicide Squad, however, Davidson’s volatile Blackguard mostly uses guns.

Polka-Dot Man

POLKA-DOT MAN Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man Polka-Dot Man is definitely a throwback character, created in the ’60s as a minor foil to Batman by comic book writers who were obviously throwing any bizarre idea out there and saying, “yeah, that works — let’s go with that.” Abner Krill was a small-time crook in Gotham with access to advanced technology in the form of small circles embedded in his suit. When removed from the suit, the dots enlarge and take on different forms, including a buzzsaw, a flying saucer, fists, and a black hole for teleportation. It will be fun to see just how off-the-wall Gunn’s version, portrayed by David Dastmalchian, will be allowed to be. We’ve seen a glimpse of Polka-Dot Man’s polka dots in action in one of the trailers, but I’m excited to see more of this bizarre power. Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian) Suicide Squad Roll Call David Dastmalchian Polka Dot Man Abner Krill, a.k.a. Polka-Dot Man or Mister Polka-Dot, is a minor Batman villain from the 1960s, who launched a crime wave inspired by dots and spots. He wore a costume covered in polka-dots that could be removed from the suit and would turn into a variety of objects, from deadly weapons to a flying saucer, which he used as an escape vehicle. These weapons are faithfully translated to the screen in The Suicide Squad, and Polka-Dot Man acknowledges how absurd his identity is, but he’s still excited about the prospect of being an anti-hero. Trailers have shown his powers in effect, and his desire to become an anti-hero looks to be one of the film’s more heartwarming moments, however few and far between they may be.

Savant

SAVANT Savant in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com Michael Rooker as Savant Michael Rooker is great in just about anything, and I’m pumped for his third team-up with James Gunn after both Guardians of the Galaxy films. In The Suicide Squad, he portrays Brian Durlin/Savant, a genius-level computer whiz who inherited an enormous fortune and moved to Gotham City to become a crime-fighting vigilante. If that sounds familiar, you would be correct. Except rather than save innocent bystanders, Savant, you know, let them die. When Batman discouraged Savant from continuing vigilantism because of his lack of concern for people, Savant used his skills to blackmail people instead. Mongal

MONGAL Mongal in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com Mayling Ng as Mongal As a minor DC supervillain who didn’t last very long in the comics, Mongal is an interesting choice for The Suicide Squad. I hope it’s not a spoiler to say that since we expect not all the characters will be left standing by the time the credits roll, it’s a good bet that Mongal might just meet an unfortunate end. She’s an alien overlord, the daughter of Mongul the Elder and the sister of Mongul II (I know, this family nomenclature really needs to sort itself out), and with super strength and stamina, she and her brother have gone toe-to-toe with Superman. However, in a Green Lantern comic, her brother wound up killing her with a single punch after stating that familial bonds just make a person weak. Nice family! Mayling Ng will be portraying Mongal in her big-screen debut. TDK

TDK TDK in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com Nathan Fillion as TDK….or Arm-Fall-Off Boy?? There’s a fair bit of speculation over just which comic book character Nathan Fillion will be portraying in The Suicide Squad, because no character by the name of TDK appears in the comics. However, internet sleuths believe they’ve solved the mystery: TDK stands for The Detachable Kid. If so, this character is likely a re-brand of Arm-Fall-Off-Boy, who yes, was an actual comics character. He had the ability to detach his limbs and use them as weapons. Again, I am not making this up. Honestly, this power sounds about as hilarious as it is ridiculous, so I’m really excited about seeing this one onscreen. TDK (Nathan Fillion) Suicide Squad Roll Call Nathan Fillion TDK TDK has been confirmed to be short for The Detachable Kid, which in turn is another name for Arm-Fall-Off-Boy. He has the ability to detach his own limbs and use them as blunt weapons, though it is unclear how he originally acquired this strange power. His ability proved unimpressive, and he was rejected by the Legion. A recently released clip from the film has shown that this ability will likely be just as useless on the big screen, though it will no doubt prove to be a moment of great hilarity before the chaos resumes once more. The character will be played by Nathan Fillion, known for his leading roles in cult television shows Firefly and Castle. Like Michael Rooker, Fillion is a friend and long-time collaborator of director James Gunn, who featured him as an alien in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Cleo (Ratcatcher 2)

RATCATCHER II Ratcatcher 2 in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher II Otis Flannegan was a ratcatcher in Gotham City who used his uncanny ability to train and commune with rats, along with his knowledge of the city’s sewer system, to cause Batman a lot of grief. But It’s his daughter Cleo, taking on the name Ratcatcher II, who we’ll meet in The Suicide Squad. She will be portrayed by Portuguese actress Daniela Melchior. Cleo has all of the same powers as her father. She can control and communicate with rats, making them obey her every whim. In the trailer, we see a glimpse of Cleo using a sonic screwdriver-looking thing, which may be how she can control the rats. Either way, you probably don’t want her at your next party. Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior) Suicide Squad Roll Call Daniela Melchior Ratcatcher Portuguese actress Daniela Melchior portrays Ratcatcher 2, presumably related to the Batman villain Ratcatcher, whose ability was controlling and communicating with rats. Originally called Otis Flannegan, he developed his criminal alter-ego as Ratcatcher and trained hordes of rats to kill and torture before he was stopped by Batman. It is possible that Ratcatcher 2 could be Flannegan’s daughter, his protegée, gender-swapped parallel, or perhaps even a superfan of his. Pre-release trailers showed Ratcatcher 2’s abilities in full view, and have gave fans a glimpse of her more vulnerable side during conversations when core team member, Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, promises to get her out alive. What these conversations could mean in context is anyone’s guess, but perhaps a moment of somber reflection and closeness that the film could build on throughout.

King Shark

KING SHARK King Shark in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com Sylvester Stallone as King Shark One of the rare non-human characters in the Suicide Squad (and just wait until you hear about Weasel), Nanaue is a humanoid shark with powers that include, well, being a humanoid shark. There’s been long-held debate in the comics over whether he’s the son of the Shark God (as he claims) or just a savage genetic mutation. You might think his oceanic nature would make him a custom-made villain for Aquaman, but King Shark actually made his debut in Superboy in 1994. Similar to Harley Quinn, King Shark is making more and more appearances in DC properties, and personally, I would watch a spinoff of this character as well. In The Suicide Squad, he is voiced by none other than Rocky himself, Sylvester Stallone. King Shark Suicide Squad Roll Call King Shark King Shark is a shark-human hybrid. It was believed initially that King Shark would be voiced by comedian Steve Agee, but the first trailer for The Suicide Squad revealed that Sylvester Stallone is in fact voicing the towering and terrifying hybrid. Also known as Nanaue, King Shark’s father is the Shark God. Due to his physiology, he is able to live indefinitely underwater with superhuman strength and durability, as well as a phenomenal appetite for humans. Despite his intimidating appearance and abilities, King Shark is innocent to a fault, anotherrkey element to his character. He’s often depicted as a hammerhead shark in the comics, but King Shark's new The Suicide Squad design gives him a great white-like appearance. Interestingly, Suicide Squad director David Ayer has previously explained that King Shark was originally meant to appear in his 2016 movie but, because this would only have been possible as a fully CGI character, he was replaced by Killer Croc. With Aquaman getting a sequel to his solo movie, it’s possible The Suicide Squad’s King Shark will cross paths with the King of Atlantis in the future.

Weasel

WEASEL Weasel in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com James Gunn as Weasel So here we finally have Weasel. John Monroe was bullied relentlessly as a student at Stanford University. As an adult, Monroe got a job teaching at Vandermeer University in Philadelphia along with several of his old Stanford colleagues. This made Monroe so angry he rationalized murdering them. Donning a costume with long claws and calling himself Weasel, one of the nicknames his tormentors gave him, he murdered three of them until Firestorm eventually put him in prison. After being recruited to the Suicide Squad, Weasel attempted to kill The Thinker on a mission before Rick Flag put him down for good. In the film, Weasel, played by Sean Gunn, seems to be some human/animal hybrid who has killed 27 children, according to the trailer. Safe to say I don’t think we’ll see a stuffed animal of this character anytime soon. Weasel (Sean Gunn) Suicide Squad Roll Call Sean Gunn Weasel James Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn is set to appear as the motion-capture character Weasel, a man-sized anthropomorphic weasel. In the character’s first incarnation as John Monroe, Weasel was a man who did not perform well in academia, and so took on the costumed identity of a weasel to brutally murder those he believed threatened to take his tenure. In The Suicide Squad, Weasel is an actual mutant weasel who possesses superhuman strength and speed. At first, the team doesn’t really know what creature he is and even confuse him with a werewolf, but soon get to have more respect for him once they learn that he has killed 27 children. Sean Gunn previously played the motion capture for Rocket Raccoon as well as Kraglin in his brother’s Guardian of the Galaxy movies.

Javelin

JAVELIN Javelin in The Suicide Squad | BookRiot.com Flula Borg as Javelin Just in time for the Olympics, we will see the first former Olympian turned criminal mastermind on the big screen! Gunter Braun was a German athlete who competed in the Olympics before apparently realizing, “Hey — I can use my javelin-throwing abilities to aid and abet a life of crime instead!” Using a collection of high-tech exploding javelins, he fought against Green Lantern before being captured. Which of course he was, because there’s really no contest between a ring that can literally do almost anything and an exploding javelin. Anyway, Braun joins the Suicide Squad in order to get his sentence revoked, and later teams up with a few other villains in an attempt to frame Amanda Waller. He is played by Flula Borg in the film. Javelin (Flula Borg) Suicide Squad Roll Call Flula Borg Javelin Javelin, played by Flula Borg in The Suicide Squad, is a former German Olympic athlete who, for unknown reasons, turned to a life of crime. He created an arsenal of weapons based on javelins and went up against Green Lantern when he stole a prototype jet-powered solar Ferris Aircraft, defeating him. Javelin was later captured, however, and recruited to the Suicide Squad. Pre-release trailers hinted that this character wouldn’t last long and that Harley Quinn may have something to do with his untimely demise.

Suicide Squad 2

The government sends the most dangerous supervillains in the world -- Bloodsport, Peacemaker, King Shark, Harley Quinn and others -- to the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Armed with high-tech weapons, they trek through the dangerous jungle on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Col. Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave.
