Skills and abilities

Her most impressive physical feat is her ability to outmatch several stalkers in combat, who are known for their swift movement and above-average strength while defending Lev and Yara in the Seattle forest.[12] She could also out-muscle and defeat other WLF soldiers and easily overwhelm Ellie in melee combat despite Ellie stabbing her. Abby also managed to defeat Tommy Miller in combat, an individual once infamous among the Fireflies for his fighting proficiency, albeit with assistance from Yara, who stopped Tommy from pushing Abby over a pier when she was overwhelmed by him. Abby also exhibited skill in stealth, able to sneak up on Ellie and defeat her in a fight despite her possessing a shotgun, bow, and pistol and setting up numerous traps when fighting her. She could also maneuver her way through the rubble to avoid Tommy while the man was attempting to snipe her and Manny Alvarez.[6] Much like Joel, she can perform fatal chokeholds by breaking enemies' necks and is proficient in the use of multiple styles of combat and weaponry from her upbringing.[13] She can capably use multiple firearms. She is so skilled that Isaac made her one of his highest-ranked soldiers, entrusting her to lead the first wave of assault on the Seraphine island.[10] Her reaction time is sharp, able to quickly shoot Jesse in the head when he runs into a room.[14] Her most impressive feat in combat was her ability to single-handedly defeat a Rat King-infected type while trapped in the basement of the Seattle hospital. To date, she is the only known individual capable of doing so and surviving.

Skills and abilities

Despite her incredible strength and resilience, Abby can still be overwhelmed by multiple enemies and those who possess greater strength than her.[10] She also struggles to defeat opponents when surprised, like when she needed Lev to intervene when attacked by a knife-wielding Dina, when she was ambushed by Tommy and Yara came to her aid, and earlier required assistance when a Seraphite brute nearly choked her to death at Haven.[6] In addition, her time as a Rattler hostage has caused much of her muscular physique and strength to degrade. However, even in her weakened state, she still held her own against a weakened Ellie and had enough strength to bite off sections of Ellie's fingers. Ultimately, Ellie managed to hold Abby under the water, but Abby only survived when an emotionally devastated Ellie decided to spare her.

Physically and appearance

Abby is a tall woman who is 24 and 6’2, with dark blonde hair (which she kept braided in a fishtail for most of her youth and early adult life), pale, freckled skin, and blue eyes.[5] While she had a fairly normal build during her time as a Firefly, her thirst for revenge led her to develop a solid and muscular build while a soldier in the WLF, which made her easily identifiable to others. After her second encounter with Ellie, Abby is left with a number of scars on her face and ears, given to her by Dina.

Back story

Abby was born in 2014 and is the daughter of Jerry Anderson, the head surgeon who worked for the Fireflies and was killed by Joel Miller when rescuing Ellie. Her father raised her as a member of the Fireflies during the apocalypse and took her to live in Salt Lake City where he worked on making a vaccine for the Cordyceps brain infection. From a young age, the Fireflies and WLF trained Abby into a capable soldier. Her extensive training has resulted in her gaining a muscular and toned physique that enables her to perform incredible feats of strength such as breaking bones and crushing skulls.[10] She has also demonstrated fierce fist-fighting prowess to the point she can take on multiple individuals at once and even render her opponents unconscious with a few well-placed hits.[6] She could even defeat individuals larger than herself in physical combat, notably tackling a sledgehammer-wielding Seraphite to the ground.[12]

Infected

The infected are humans who have been infected by the Cordyceps brain infection and subsequently mutated into horrific new forms. The resulting creatures are aggressive, and will attack any uninfected human and animals on sight.

Runners

Runners are the first and weakest stage of infected. They are people who have recently turned into infected after contact with the Cordyceps brain infection. They are defined by their speed, clumsy attacks and their tendency to swarm their targets.

Stalkers

Stalkers are the second stage of the infected. They take between two weeks and one year to reach this stage after exposure to the Cordyceps brain infection. Stalkers have the vision and speed of runners, with the ferocity of clickers. The most notable physical traits that define the stalkers are the distinct croaking noises they make, the beginning of fungal growths on the head and face, usually leaving the host with only one eye left, the development of pseudo-echolocation, and their discretion upon spotting a victim at a distance. They will strafe and take cover, displaying an agile and stealth-reliant nature.[2] They eventually close in on their target, hence the name "stalker". Up close, stalkers are very aggressive and will charge directly at the victim.

Clickers

Clickers are the third stage of the infected. They have had prolonged exposure to the fungus, and now possess strength that significantly surpasses the average human. Clickers appear less human than runners and stalkers, with faces that are completely skewed and scarred by fungus developed from their infected brains, often only leaving behind a maw of jagged teeth. By this point, whatever clothes the host may have been wearing are mostly tattered and destroyed. The skin is covered in mold and scaly fungal growths, which can be seen glowing in the dark. Most notably, the eyes of clickers have been pushed out of the sockets due to advanced fungal growth, leaving the host completely blind.[3] In response to their blindness, clickers develop a form of crude echolocation by producing rapid clicking and croaking sounds, which has earned the infected their namesake.[4] The formation of fungal plates on the heads of clickers are adapted to keep the host alive and offer protection to the brain. In fact, a direct shot to the head with a powerful weapon such as a revolver will only break off a chunk of the fungus, leaving the clicker's brain unharmed. This makes them deadlier, but at the price of being completely blind due to fungal infection taking over their face.[5] Like runners, clickers can sometimes be found in a passive state and standing in a slouched position. If agitated, the clicker will begin to roam and search the surrounding area for the stressor.[6] Clickers also erratically twitch and sometimes claw at the fungal growth covering their face, and often stumble clumsily when walking around passively.

Bloaters

Bloaters are the fourth, rarest, and most dangerous stage of the infected. Bloaters are incredibly strong and physically imposing infected that are covered in thick fungus that effectively acts as armor plates.[2] As such, the fungal growth forms large patches of scale-like tissue that are bioluminescent. It is from these tissues that form the mycotoxin pouches and engulf their entire body.[3] Because of this protective covering, they can withstand multiple hits from weapons such as the shotgun and hunting rifle, and even hatchets and machetes, making them extremely tough to dispatch. Bloaters are extremely aggressive, but are rather slow-moving and uncoordinated, making them more predictable than other infected.[1] Like clickers, bloaters 'see' using echolocation to locate and attack a survivor.[4][5] Because the fungus has completely deformed their face and blinded them, their echolocation is much less refined than the clickers. Their clicking is much deeper and more groaning in tone than a clicker.[2] If a bloater grabs a survivor, it will violently rip their jaw apart through brute strength, grab the player's head and smash it, pin them to the ground and pummel their body mercilessly, or grab the survivor's neck and bend it to break the spine, killing them instantly.
