Joseph Joestar

PERSONALITY

Joseph's personality on its own is bizarre, and a melting pot of cockiness, brash attitude, clever foresight, and unbridled rage. Both in and out of battle, he enjoys mocking his opponents maliciously, and often plays the fool to bait enemies into getting hit. He is well aware of his skills in deception and planning; a favourite past-time of his is even predicting his opponent's next line, and saying it before they do. He can think of asinine strategies in the middle of battle as well as deduce weaknesses, and seasoned warriors who fight him soon become aware that they have to be on their guard at all times around him. He considers his signature technique to be "Running Away", but by his own admission this is only ever a ploy to lead his opponent into a trap.

BEHIND HIS PERSONALITY

As much as Joseph enjoys toying with opponents before beating the crap out of them, he does have a sense of honour. If an opponent has fought him bravely, he will allow them to perish in peace with respect, but against people he deems to be pure evil, he makes sure they suffer as much as they can before they go down. As he aged, Joseph became more mellowed out, though his younger cocky personality emerges when in the thick of battle. And as an old man, he was still willing to give everything he had to help his family, even at personal cost.

HISTORY

The "New York Jojo" is the grandson of Jonathan Joestar, the first of his family to awaken the power of hamon and who sacrificed his life for his wife to escape the vampire Dio Brando. While nothing like Jonathan in terms of personality, Joseph did gain his grandfather's latent abilities with hamon; this made him a target for a new vampire who wished to remove him from the picture before he became a threat. Joseph survived the encounter, only to be told that his family friend Robert E.O. Speedwagon had been kidnapped. Jojo then became embroiled in a plot regarding the vampire's creators, the even stronger Pillar Men. Knowing he would need to master hamon in order to defeat them, Joestar travelled to Rome to study under coach Lisa Lisa, alongside rival Caesar Zeppeli. With his newfound skill and his repertoire of impossible tricks, Joseph was able to defeat all four Pillar Men, and reunite with his long-lost mother in the process. Decades later, Dio Brando emerged once again, having taken over the body of Jonathan Joestar. This awakened the power of a "Stand" in each of Jonathan's descendants, including Joseph who gained the thorn-like "Hermit Purple". Joseph's grandson Jotaro Kujo also developed a powerful stand, but his daughter/Jotaro's mother could not handle her new powers, and began to lose her life. With Jotaro and friends in tow, Joseph set out to Egypt to confront and destroy Dio, putting an end to the Joestar bane once and for all. Joseph would later have an illegitimate son, Josuke Higashikata. Despite being in advanced age and beyond his fighting days, he would still show his support for this newest Jojo during his battles with Yoshikage Kira, as well as caring for an infant stand user the two discovered.
